Mrs. Toppin and her kindergarten class at the tree-planting ceremony
Teacher to retire from Seiler
by Judy Stoltzfus
Mrs. Marian Toppin’s
kindergarten class planted a
tree April 30 in honor of her
teaching career. Mrs. Top-
pin will retire at the close of
this school year. The
veeping cherry tree was
purchased by the present
kindergarten class at Seiler.
A stone, beneath the tree
says ‘Mrs. Marian Toppin.
For teaching service Kin-
dergarten class of 1976.’
The stone was paid partly by
the kindergarten students
and partly by the Seiler ana
Home Association. The
weeping cherry tree was
from the Mount Joy Vo-tech
The tree was planted in
front of the school on the
right hand side of the drive-
way.
Mrs. Toppin first started
teaching at Newtown School
grades 1-8 in 1936-39. From
1939-42 she taught at Sport-
inghill grades 1-4. Conse-
quently, in 1942 she left
education and worked at
Armstrong as a private
secretary for 3 yrs. Return-
ing to education in 1950, she
opened her own private
kindergarten in Mount Joy.
In 1953 she started teaching
for Donegal School District
and she has been ever since.
In 1934-36 she attended
Elizabethtown college and
studied Elementary Educa-
tion. Mrs. Toppin received
her Bachelors Degree in
1960.
Mrs. Toppin is a very
well-liked and respected
teacher. She is now teaching
students who have parents
that had her for a teacher.
