TIIE COMAS AND TEE EPISTLES.
These two portions of the New Testa
ment are often contrasted, and the prefer
ence is given to the former, as the more
plain and easily understood, and hence the
more valuable. We are afraid that injury
is sometimes thus done to the Master's
cause. He spate as never man spate, but
we do not find that be claimed any prefer
ence to the narrations by ,evangelists, of
his discourses, over what were to be the re
cords of heavenly truth by the same wri
ters, and by others, when • they would be,
taught by the Holy Ghost. And that he
taught all things which
, shoitid belccoarn,
is not to be claimed by a ny. _ He e;pressly
told, his disciples that there wern• many
things whioh..they were not ,able ,to bear,
in'.the Childhood of their faith, but Which
the:Spirit . ipt truth should afterwarda teach
thnm • and 'after" his departure, theY d not e

To say that the'lloSpels are more easily
understood than the Epistles, is partly

rest and partly incorrect. • They are adapt- .

PRESBYTERIAN BANNER.-WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 1863.

and the Standards of the Presbyterian
Church, a sift against God; and, whereas,

ligion throughout the world. The Saviour's
words are a rule for all ages, with only the
modification of times, places, and circum
stances. "But ye shall receive power after
that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and
ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Je
rusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria,
and unto the uttermost parti of the earth."
We counsel you, brethren, in view of these
things; to remember your high vocation.
Besides the surpassing interests at stake in
your own behalf, the example of your ac
tions, words, and spirit, are a great power
for good or evil, especially in these dis
tresising- times. • As " the light of the
world," to shine - in the lustre of the Mao

qients in godliness are ti - sacred trust for
;yourselves, kir others, vidfor Christ. We
.beseeoh, you, therefore,lo be sober and vig
ilant.amidst manifold temptations; to be
diligent• in cultivating piety in your own
hearts, and ,ever to.remember that " ye are
not your own; for ye:are , bought with a
