SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 1861
A. SOLDIER STMT.- On Saturday night
last about 12 o'clock, a soldier belonging
to Capt. Waltman's company at Camp
Johnston, named Sleeper, was shot dead
by a yourg man named Brubaker, in Mr.
Denlinger's barn-yard, about three miles
west of this city. The circumstances
detailed to us are as follows: Mr. Den
linger,owing to threats made about burn
ing his barn, had a guard of his neigh
bors for several nights previous on his
premises. On that night, Mr. B. was on
duty, when the deceased and two other
soldters came into the barn-yard and
stole a turkey and several chickens.
Wheb discovered they ran, Mr. B.several
times calling Upon them to stop, but to
no purpose. He then fired a load of shot,
intending to wound the man in the legs;
but, unfortunately, elevated his gun too
high, and the shot took i.ffect in the left
aide under the arm, breaking three of the
ribs and pea/eft:Ling, his heart. He died
immediately. Mr. B. gave himself up.
"Mr. B. had a bearing before Judges
Long and Bnintoti, on Monday afternoon.
Bon. Thos. E. Franklin appeared for the
Commonwealtb,and - Edward Reilly,Esq.
for the defendant. The Court, after
hearing the testimony, held him to bail,

'rear car of a soldier train while passing
through this borough, at four o'clock
,on Thursday morning. and strange to
:say was not hurt, which only can be ac

of our patriotic young men on learning
these state of . things, provided him with
breakfast, which Mr. Johnstin, o'f the
'Eagle hotel, gave lign. -a cap, a lot of
tobacco, segars, and a free pass to ITaris
burg, where he expected in overtake his
company. He says they left I'hiladei
phia at one o'clock at night, and being
rather full of lager, when getting on the
cars, lie could not get into thefreight car,
but took a seat on the bumper, from
lvhich he fell while the, train was passing
through this place. •
We paid a flying visit to Camp John
ston on Tuesday afternoon last and found
our arietta boys on Regimental parade.
They appeared to go through the drill
remarkably well, all• things considered.
Tables were then being put up for the
great feast to take place the following
clay, to be given by the ladies cf Lan
caster to the 14th and 15th Regiments.
This dinner come oft and the papers of
that city speak of it as a complete success.
