SATURDAY, MAY 4, 1861
Ire We did not issue a paper last
Week in consequence of the sudden de
parture, for the seat of war, of our prin
cipal assistant, who was suddenly taken
with the war fever and left us without
an hour's notice. We left nothing un
done, however, to immediately s u p p l y
his place, by sending to Harisburg,
Lancaster and elsewhere, and to all our
inquiries for help the only answer we
received was "the idle printer& have
all enlisted—none out of work here_
this was very unusual for us to hear, for
we have always had more applications
for work than we could possibly grant.
Fortunately, however, on Thursday and
Friday we received a couple of acces
sions and to-day we push forth again._
This deficit shall not be charged to our
subscribers, for we will give fifty-two
numbers to the year, and will extend
volume 7 to July 20th. Since our last
issue, our town has been in the greateit
military enthusiasm—meetings every
evening for the purpose of filling up"the
ranks of the Mount Joy Rifles and.the
Maytown Infantry, which Once done a
new company called the" Marietta Cam
eron Guards," numbering IE4 men, rank
and file, with J. N. Congdon, Esq., for
captain, H. 11. Sawyer and J. Scott
Patterson, first and second lieutenants,
was formed and are now.stationed at
." Camp Curtin," awaiting further orders.
In our next we will endeavor to give
a list of the names attaChed to these
companies. The borough is nightly
patrolled. A. " Home Guard," under
Dr. (late Brigadier General) Jowl H.
GROVE, is being nightly' drilled in the
Town Ilan Park. In a word, we are by
no means behind our neighbors.
tar The Spring business may be said
to be closed up. Al Mere. Complete
failure in the lumber business at this
point, is not within the reccollection of
the oldest inhabitants.
MARIEITA BELIEF CGMIIITTEI3.—That
the families of the brave men who hive
gone to defend our government and flag
against warring traitors,. Might not suf
fer during the absence of their protectors
and providers, the citizens appointed
the following Committee tosittend to
them, and to collect and Teceido further
„bribscriptions for their relief,,,
James Wilson, Esq.,. Capt. Samuel
Miller. Rev. A. B. Grosh, Miss
.Matilda Bailie, Mrs. Mary:Moore, and
Miss Elizabeth Cassel, with power to
`add to , their number such as they m.:ay
need.
This Cimmittee metjhp next da,parld
vrganized by constituting
' CAPT. SAMUEL lIA.ER, PRESIDENT;
James Wilson, .Esq.,=Treasurer ;
J?.!v. A. B. Grosh, Secl'etary.
They also appointed the following as
'visitors and collectors for the following
wards or divisions: - •
First—all west of :.Gay street—Miss
Bailie and Mrs. J. W.-Clark.
Second—between t,ay'st: and Walnut
and _Elbow lune:,..l4tra. Mootie and
Mrs. Dr. Hinkle.,
Third—between Walnut st., Elbow
lane and Bank st.--,Miss Cassel and
Miss Eliza Hopkins.
4:..Foto•th—between Bank at.. and Chic
-ques'—Al is. E. F. Eagle and rs. K rout.
• These will collect' one third of the
several sums subscribed forthwith, (while
•Ivisiting the families,) as the necessities
of the Volunteers themselves; at their
•departure, exhausted all the cash paid
in, and some of 'the families need imme
diate relief. All subscribers, therefore,
are requested to pay--at -least one third
on call—more, will be' gladly received,
and if all is paid - it will save some
trouble" to the lady collectois, whose
;duties to some 25 'Or 30 families is likely
=to take up all their leisure time. 'Will
gentlemen plrse notice?
These ladies are also authorized to
,receive new subscriptions. Gentlemen
wishing to enlarge, or not yet favored
with- an opportunity; will please avail
themselves of their first meeting with
any of these ladies, thus to preform the
handsome and generous ditty of serving
their country," and "sustaining the
_gov
ernment" against the thieving, piratical
.and murdering traitors of the C. S. A.
Tor the present, the Committee pro-
Tose to meet weekly to receive the
~reports of the visitors and rrovide relief
foeapplicants. A. B. G.
To' ova CpUTRY FRIENDS.-It has been
suggested to us, that many farmers in
Jahr Vicinity would be pleased twat& us
in,supplying the wants of the families of
Volunteers; and we therefore request
Ahern_ to deposit at any of our :stores,
where they usually deal, (Messrs. Dif
fenbach, Spangler 4 Patterson, and
Abm. Cassel,) subject to our order,
suclrarticles as they can spare and we
can nse. Dried fruits, cured meats, po
tatoes, flour, &c., will always be accept
able.
In such donations we feel that all can
unite to whom God has granted means,
and hearts to bestow them. Whey are
not such donations as can be used to
piOmote war or bloodshed, destruction
o"r ruin ; but go to farnilies.7-to the aged
parents, the lone wife, the, helpless chil
dren--and hence all can unite in this
work; for " the Son of Man came, not
to destroy men's jives, but to save them."
Who will refuse to unite in this work ?
An aged and conscientious Friend
(or Quaker), on being asked for aid to
build a new church on the site of an old
one yet star:ding, said•" Thee knows
that my principled will.not allow me to
aid in building a steeple house. I can
not, therefore, aid thee. But it is not
against my principles to help pull down
steeples. I will therefore give thee fifty
dollars to help pall down the old steeple
house." Now, this feeding of destithte
families we feel to be a better work than
pulling down steeples . ; and we therefore
ask the aid .of cur country friends
_in
doing it.
.By order of the Relief Committee.

HOLLOWAY'S P I L L o.—An incontrovertible
Truth. The Blood the sores of health. The
blood is the river of life and conveyi on its
current the elmneats of health or disease in Its
course through the fibres and tissues of the hu
man frame—if pure it strengthenes the mus
cles, braces the nerves, gives solidits to the
bone, firmness to the flesh, lustre to the eye,
brilliancy to the complexion and elasticity to
the animal spirits: when vitiated, it infects
the whole system and is prolific of such disor
ders as scurvy,. scrofula, and all cutaneous e
raptions. With these facts before us, we see
how essential it is to health to preserve the
blood pure. Holloway's pills will purify it iu
the most effectual manner, no matter how tain
ted it may be.

old age, in all its youthful beauty.
Battle Creek, IVlicb., Dec. 21st, 185 S
Prior. Noon : Thee willt please accept a
line to inform thee that the hair on my head all
fell off over twenty years ago, caused by a com
plicated chronic disease, attended with an erup
tion on the head. A continual course of suffer
ing through life having reduced me to a state of
dependence, I have not been able to obtain
stuff for caps, neither have I been able to do
them up, in consequence of which my head has
suffered
_extremely from cold. This induced
me to pay Briggs & Hodges almost the last cen t
I had on earth for a two dollar bottle of thy
Hair Restorative about the first of August last.
I have faithfully followed the directions and
ihe bald spot is now covered with hair thick
and black, though short, it is also coming in all
over my- head. Feeling confident that another
large bottle would restore it entirely and per
manently, I feel anxious to persevere in its use,
and being destitute of mesas to purchase any
more, I would ask thee if thee wouldst not be
willing to send me an order on thine agents far
a bottle, and receive to thyself the scripture
declaration—"the reward is to those who are
kind to the widow and the fatherless."

igonier Noble Co., Indiana, Feb. 5, 1859
PROF. 0. J. WOOD: Dear Sir :—ln the latter
part of the year 1552, while attending the State
and National Law School of the State of New
York, my hair, from a cause unknown to me,
commenced falling off very rapidly, so that in
the short space of six months the whole upper
part of my scalp was almost entirely bereft of
its covering, and much of the remaining por
tion upon the side and back part of my head
shortly after became gray, so that you will not
be iurpriSed when 1 tell you that upon my re
turn to the State of Indiana, my mere casual
acquaintances were not so much at a loss to
discover the cause of the change in my appear
ance, as my more intimate acquaintances were
to recognise me at all.
I at once made application to the most skill
ful physician dn the country, but, receiving no
assurance from them that my hair could again
be restored, I was forced to become reconciled
to my fate, until, fortunately, in the latter pact
of the year 1857, your Restorative was recom
mended to me by a druggist, as being the most
-reliable Hair Restorative in use. 1 tried one
bottle, and found to my great satisfaction that
it was producing tie desired effect. Since that
time, I have used seven dollars' worth of your
Restorative, and as a result, have a rich coat of
very soft black hair, which no money can buy.
As a mark of my gratitude for your labor
and skill in the production of so wonderful an
article, I have recommended its use to many of
my friends and acquaintances,
who, I am hap
py to inform you, are using it with like effect.
Very respectfully yours, A. AL LATTA,
Attorney and Counsellor at Law.
TILE RESTORATIVE is put up, in bottles of
three sizes, viz : large, medium, and small; the
sown holds 4-a-pint, and retails for $1 a bottle,
the medium holds at least twenty per cent more
in proportion than the small, retails for $2 per
bottle ; the large holds a quart, 40 per cent
more in proportion, and retails for $3.

CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM.
HOLLOWAY'S PILLS
NERVOUS DISORDERS.
What is more fearful than the breaking
down of the nervous s3"stem I To be exeitea
ble or nervous in a small degree is most dis
tressing, for where can a remedy be found
There is one:—drink but little wine, beer, or
spirits, or far better, none ; take no coffee,—
weak tea being preferable ; get all the fresh
air you can ; take tree or four Pills every night;
eat plenty of solids, avoiding the use of slops ;
and if these golden rules are followed, you
will he happy in mind and strong in body, and
orget you have any nerves.
MOTHERS' AND DAUGHTERS.
If there is one thing more than another for
wLieh these Pills are so famous it is their puri
fying properties, especially their power of
cleansing the blood from all impurities, and
removing dangerous and suspended secretions.
Universally adopted as the one grand remedy
for female complaints, they never fail, never
weaken the system, and always bring about
what is required.
SICK HEADACHZS AND WANT OF AP-
PETITE.
These feat:rigs which so-sadden us, most fr-e
quently arise . frqmannoyanceilir trouble, front
obstructed perspiration, or from eating and
drinking what is unfit for us, thus disordering
the liver and stomach. These org ens must be
regulated if yoU wish to be well. The, Pills, if
taken according to the printed instructions,
will quickly restore a healthy action to both
liver and stomach, whence follow as a natural
consequence, a good appetite and a clear bead.
In the East and West Indies scarcely any other
medicine is ever used for these disorders.
DISORDERS OF THE KIDNEEV.
In all diseases affecting these organs, wheth
er they secrete too much or too little water;
or whetlior they be afflicted with stone or gravel
or with aches and pains settled in the loins
over the regions of the kidney* these Pills
should be taken according to the printed direc
tions, and the Ointment ahould be well rubbed
into the small of the back at bed time. This
treatment will give almost immediate relict
when all other means have failed.
FOR STOMACHS OUT OF ORDER.
No medicine 'will so effectually improve the
tone of the stomach as these Pills • they remove
all acidity, occasioned either by intemperance
or improper diet. They reach the liver
and reduce it to a healthy action ; they are
wonderfully efficacious in case of spasm, —in
fact they never fail in curing all disorder of
the liver and Stomach.
Holloway's Pills are the best remedy known
in the world for the following diseases.
