ElCide SATURDAY, MAY 4, 1861 Ire We did not issue a paper last Week in consequence of the sudden de parture, for the seat of war, of our prin cipal assistant, who was suddenly taken with the war fever and left us without an hour's notice. We left nothing un done, however, to immediately s u p p l y his place, by sending to Harisburg, Lancaster and elsewhere, and to all our inquiries for help the only answer we received was "the idle printer& have all enlisted—none out of work here_ this was very unusual for us to hear, for we have always had more applications for work than we could possibly grant. Fortunately, however, on Thursday and Friday we received a couple of acces sions and to-day we push forth again._ This deficit shall not be charged to our subscribers, for we will give fifty-two numbers to the year, and will extend volume 7 to July 20th. Since our last issue, our town has been in the greateit military enthusiasm—meetings every evening for the purpose of filling up"the ranks of the Mount Joy Rifles and.the Maytown Infantry, which Once done a new company called the" Marietta Cam eron Guards," numbering IE4 men, rank and file, with J. N. Congdon, Esq., for captain, H. 11. Sawyer and J. Scott Patterson, first and second lieutenants, was formed and are now.stationed at ." Camp Curtin," awaiting further orders. In our next we will endeavor to give a list of the names attaChed to these companies. The borough is nightly patrolled. A. " Home Guard," under Dr. (late Brigadier General) Jowl H. GROVE, is being nightly' drilled in the Town Ilan Park. In a word, we are by no means behind our neighbors. tar The Spring business may be said to be closed up. Al Mere. Complete failure in the lumber business at this point, is not within the reccollection of the oldest inhabitants. MARIEITA BELIEF CGMIIITTEI3.—That the families of the brave men who hive gone to defend our government and flag against warring traitors,. Might not suf fer during the absence of their protectors and providers, the citizens appointed the following Committee tosittend to them, and to collect and Teceido further „bribscriptions for their relief,,, James Wilson, Esq.,. Capt. Samuel Miller. Rev. A. B. Grosh, Miss .Matilda Bailie, Mrs. Mary:Moore, and Miss Elizabeth Cassel, with power to `add to , their number such as they m.:ay need. This Cimmittee metjhp next da,parld vrganized by constituting ' CAPT. SAMUEL lIA.ER, PRESIDENT; James Wilson, .Esq.,=Treasurer ; J?.!v. A. B. Grosh, Secl'etary. They also appointed the following as 'visitors and collectors for the following wards or divisions: - • First—all west of :.Gay street—Miss Bailie and Mrs. J. W.-Clark. Second—between t,ay'st: and Walnut and _Elbow lune:,..l4tra. Mootie and Mrs. Dr. Hinkle., Third—between Walnut st., Elbow lane and Bank st.--,Miss Cassel and Miss Eliza Hopkins. 4:..Foto•th—between Bank at.. and Chic -ques'—Al is. E. F. Eagle and rs. K rout. • These will collect' one third of the several sums subscribed forthwith, (while •Ivisiting the families,) as the necessities of the Volunteers themselves; at their •departure, exhausted all the cash paid in, and some of 'the families need imme diate relief. All subscribers, therefore, are requested to pay--at -least one third on call—more, will be' gladly received, and if all is paid - it will save some trouble" to the lady collectois, whose ;duties to some 25 'Or 30 families is likely =to take up all their leisure time. 'Will gentlemen plrse notice? These ladies are also authorized to ,receive new subscriptions. Gentlemen wishing to enlarge, or not yet favored with- an opportunity; will please avail themselves of their first meeting with any of these ladies, thus to preform the handsome and generous ditty of serving their country," and "sustaining the _gov ernment" against the thieving, piratical .and murdering traitors of the C. S. A. Tor the present, the Committee pro- Tose to meet weekly to receive the ~reports of the visitors and rrovide relief foeapplicants. A. B. G. To' ova CpUTRY FRIENDS.-It has been suggested to us, that many farmers in Jahr Vicinity would be pleased twat& us in,supplying the wants of the families of Volunteers; and we therefore request Ahern_ to deposit at any of our :stores, where they usually deal, (Messrs. Dif fenbach, Spangler 4 Patterson, and Abm. Cassel,) subject to our order, suclrarticles as they can spare and we can nse. Dried fruits, cured meats, po tatoes, flour, &c., will always be accept able. In such donations we feel that all can unite to whom God has granted means, and hearts to bestow them. Whey are not such donations as can be used to piOmote war or bloodshed, destruction o"r ruin ; but go to farnilies.7-to the aged parents, the lone wife, the, helpless chil dren--and hence all can unite in this work; for " the Son of Man came, not to destroy men's jives, but to save them." Who will refuse to unite in this work ? An aged and conscientious Friend (or Quaker), on being asked for aid to build a new church on the site of an old one yet star:ding, said•" Thee knows that my principled will.not allow me to aid in building a steeple house. I can not, therefore, aid thee. But it is not against my principles to help pull down steeples. I will therefore give thee fifty dollars to help pall down the old steeple house." Now, this feeding of destithte families we feel to be a better work than pulling down steeples . ; and we therefore ask the aid .of cur country friends _in doing it. .By order of the Relief Committee. The blood is the river of life and conveyi on its current the elmneats of health or disease in Its course through the fibres and tissues of the hu man frame—if pure it strengthenes the mus cles, braces the nerves, gives solidits to the bone, firmness to the flesh, lustre to the eye, brilliancy to the complexion and elasticity to the animal spirits: when vitiated, it infects the whole system and is prolific of such disor ders as scurvy,. scrofula, and all cutaneous e raptions. With these facts before us, we see how essential it is to health to preserve the blood pure. Holloway's pills will purify it iu the most effectual manner, no matter how tain ted it may be.
