Mr. Baker: -In looking over your last
week's paper I noticed a short article in
which we are in formed that the late elec
-ted Borough officers have . come into
power, and in the way of advise the wri
ler hopes they may do as well as those
-who managed the affairs of our Borough
the preceeding year. The gentleman
then proceeds by making a suggestion,
which is but another way of complaining,
which if the Council should sanction
-would in his view be maintaining the
- reputation of our Council for their good
-acts.
The suggestion relates to there moral
.of the Lamp Post from the east side of
Elbow Lane to Bell's corner, that thus
imcire light would be given to those corn
ing to the Post Office from Front street.
Now bow any person dare pretend to
say that such would be the case I cannot
possibly see ; it is obvious that were it
placed•on the corner that its light would
mot be thrown down Elbow Lane toward
Front street, where the side walks are
very bad, and its light most needed.—
Where it now is, it does this, in addition
'to anything which would be date by its
removal to the proposed site, so far as
lighting the walks of pedestrians is con
cerned, its principal object. This change
would in my opinion instead of removing
the useless fifth wheel of the wagon to
which the writer compares ft be adding
simply the sixth.
As he does not clearly explain how
any particular advantage is to be gained
by the removal, I am inclined to believe
that the intimation was made from the
fact that it would more directly benefit
certain persons.
I am not positive that this is the case,
but I am prone to believe it, as there
certainly is no advantage to be gained
by the change so far as the welfare of all
is concerned. I can see no cause for
complaint, except it be , that it is not
made to give light often enough. Should
this matter hOwever be brought before
the Council, for their decision, I feel
confident that by giving it their candid
consideration its removal will not be or
dered. Yours Truly
NOTE.—This a matter to . be decided
by the Council, if the removal would not
throw more light on the uneaven and
bad sidewalks on Elbow Lane—then it
should not be removed. We agree with
"A Subscriber" that the lamp, even
where it is, is not often enough lighted

READING AND COLUMBIA RAILROAD.-
We learn that ground has been broken
on this road, which is to be completed
and ready for travel on the 4th of July,
1862. The maim line will run directly
to Columbia, and connect with the York
and Wrightsville Railroad. A branch
road six miles in length will be built to
the city of Lancaster. At Ephrata the
line will form a junction with the Down
ingtown and Waynesboro' Railroad, and
at hfanheim with the Cornwall road.—
The Reading and Columbia Railroad
will thus form a very important trunk
line through Berks and Lancaster coun
ties, and will furnish coal to a population
of two hundred thousand people. The
Cornwall branch will carry the primitive
ores from the mines for all the furnaces
at Columbia and Marietta. The main
line will pass through the Chestnut Hill
ore mines, where the cold short ores lie
in a basin one hundred feetthick. There
is probably no portion of the country
where the population is denser or the
local traffic will be greater than over the
.country traversed by this new railrOad.

DARING ROBBERY.---OG M onday night,
about eleven o'clock, a most daring rob
bery and gross outrage was committed
at the residence of John Spickler, sr.,
Penn-twp., in this county. There were
no persons in the house at the time bat
Mr. Spickler and his wife, both aged
persons. The villain, who is represented
as a man of middle size, about five feet
eight inches in height, speaking better
German, than English, and apparently
about forty years of age, had partially
disguised himself by blacking his face
for the occasion, the better to execute
the outrage contemplated, without iden
tification.
He gained en entrance into the house
by breaking open a lower window, and
afterwards bursting open the door of the
bed chamber in which the old couple
were sleeping, by rising an axe. He
compelled Mrs. S. to give him all the
money they bad, amounting to $350, and
then attacked her husband, seeing which
Mrs, S. attempted to escape.to give the
alarm and secure assistance. The robber
ran after her, and forced her back, and
after throwing her upon the floor in a
rough and brutal manner, again attacked
the old gentleman, and struck him on
the head with the axe, injuring him se•
verely.
All the circumstances considered, this
is one of the most fiendish outrages com
mitted in this county since the perpetra
troll of the Manheim tragedy, and the
fact of the helpless old man and woman
escaping with their lives seems to have
been more accidental than otherwise, as
there is no doubt the scoundrel would
have murdered them both had he found
it necessary to do so in order to com
plete his scheme of plunder.—Lancaster
