Chas. A.4leintlish, Esq., visited Harris
burg, and participated in the celebration
of.Washiniton's birth-day and witnessed
the raising of, the American flag from
the dome of the Capitol. All these com
panies elicited the warmest encomiums,
from the immense concourse of• people
present at the State Capitol on that or,
tasiOri; for the fine appearance they
made; and especially is this remark ap
plicable to the Fencibles. They we're
greatly admired. But the chief attrac
tion was the music discoursed by' the
Band connected with the company.—
They . were selected, we understand, to
play the national airs when the flag was
raised. A. high compliment, when the
fad is considred that there were a num
ber of,excellent Bands on the spot from

of our Lancaster county friends who par

Hr. Editor : I have lived long enough
to learn that publishing original pieces,
like " kissing," goes by favor. "Ruth
Hall " found it out, too, in her literary
pilgrimage. Soon as she met her friend
of the Press, she gained the summit with
out further trouble. Her erudite broth
er, and predecessor in literary fame,
thought himself " mortified " by those
of her productions, that with dint of per
severance, and mortified patience crept
into public print. When a " true "
friend lent an encouraging hand, her
"pretended " friends, who were so easily
" mortified " before, very obsequiously
turned in with the public voice of favor,
after she had soared above the need of it.
True, it is easer to eopy a printed, than
a written piece—(perhaps this is the
trouble.) For my part, 1 never aspired
to fame, in the world of poetry. If I had
I know the world too well to lon. for it
in my retired, unprotected situation. I
have that treasure within me tho' that
enables me to bear above the tide of pub
lic opinion, and in retirement view the
world as it is,and not as it would "seem to
be." "That which the world can neither
give, nor take away—The soul's calm
sunshine, and the heart-felt joy.
If I have intruded on your patience
and mortified my friends, I beg their par
don ; I will " secede "—tho' I am not a
secessionist. I love the land of my birth,
for which my fore-fathers fought too
well. I find " true " friends a priceless
and rare .article.
" Like angle's visits—few and far between."
In climbing up a craggy eminence, many
a miss step we make; much to our an
noyance, but it is the part of wisdom to
continue climbing by seeking a surer
foothold, and leaving quickly the precar
ious one. And so we maintain.our foot
ing in life; we take step by step, as one
gives way . , we more cautiously try anoth
er; learning wisdom from every incau
tious step. And with the poet we ever
find that
"Trembling at every step he takes,
Man yet mistakes his way."
I trust my literary friends will keep on
climbing—tho' it be to the mortification
of " friends," and the pleasure of enimies.
If you.stop, and let yourself go down,
the world will shout and wave the tri
umphal flag of viciory. You may find a
sure foothold by changing your position,
or wearing to another point. " Don't
give up the ship."

Du. CAMERON'S LECTURES : The dis
cources delivered last week in the Tem
perance-Hall, by Dr. John Cameron, Hy
drepathic Physician, of Columbia, were
able and interesting. The Doctor has
a pleasant conversational style of delive
ry, and so simplifys his subject matter,
as to suit it to the comprehension of all
his hearers. The subjects were : Vege
tarianism, and Water Cure, In the for
mer he,explained the health promoting
results of plain unconcentrated Lod—
the superiority of a fruit and vegetable
dietary, over any animal substances in
affording mankind the highest and best
mental and bodily conditions; as illustra
tive of this view he cited the robust and
enduring physical powers of his country
men, (the Scotch peasantry) who suosist
chiefly on oat meal n teeny of whom . eat
meat only during the Christmas festivi
ties ; they, the lecturer thought, would
compare favorably in their physice with
the meat eaters of any country.
The curative agencies of his system,
pure air, wholesome diet, and water ju-
diciously applied, he maintained, were
the best the world affords to restore nor
mal bodily conditions ; he explained
the mode of treating eruptive diseases,
such as Scarlet Fever, and also paid a
merited compliment to Dr. R. T. Trail,
principal professor of the New-York
Hydropathic College, whose prolific pen
has furnished mankind with more scien
tific truths on human life powers—sour
cesof health—causes of disease, and the
best means of preventing disease, and
restoring health, than any other living
man on the Continent. His various
works now widely spread over the land,
will cause him in after years to be recog
nized as having been one of the first
ehilarithropists of his age. It is much
to be regretted that the fact of Dr. Came
ron being about to lecture here was not
more generally known, as many who
were not apprised of it, were anxious to
give him a hearing.

HOLLOWAY'S PILLS
NERVOUS DISORDERS.
What is more fearful than the breaking
down of the nervous system? To be excitea

There is one :—drink but little wine, beer, or
spirits, or far better, none ; take no coffee,—
weak tea being. preferable ; get all the fresh
air you can ; take tree or four Pills every night;
eat plenty of solids, avoiding the use of slops ;
and if these goldon - rdles are followed, you
will he happy in mind andatrong in body, and
orget you have any nerves.
MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS.
If there is one thing more than another for
wilds these Pills are so famous it is their puri
fying properties, especially their power of
cleansing the blood. from alr. impurities, and
removing dangerous and suspended secretions.
Universally adopted+ as the one grand remedy
for female complaints, they never fail, never
weaken the system, and always bring about
what is required:.
SICK HEADACHES AND WANT OF AP-
PETITE
These feelingg which so sadden us, most fr-c
quently arise from annoyances or trouble, from
obstructed perspiration, or from eating and
drinking what is unfit for us, thus disordering
the liver and stomach. These organs must be
regulated, if you wish to be well. The Pills, if
taken according to the printed instructions,
will quickly restore a healthy action to both
liver and stomach, whence follow as a:matt/rat
consequence, a good appetite and a clearlmead.
In time East and Weselndiessearcely any other
medicine is ever used for these disorders.
' DISORDERS OF THE KIDNEY&
In all diseases affecting these organs, wheth
er they secrete too much or too little water;
or whether they be afflicted with stone or gravel
of with aches and pains settled in the loins
over ,the regions of the kidneys, these Pills
should betaken according to the printed direc
tions, and the Ointment ahould be weltrubbed
into the small of the back at bed. time: This
treatment will give almost immediate relict
when all other means have failed.
FOR STO,VIACHS OUT OF ORDER.
:F,No medicine will so effectually improve the
tone of the stomach as these Pills- they remove
all acidity, occasioned either by intemperance
or improper diet. They reach the liver
and reduce it to a healthy action ; they are
wonderfully efficacious in case of spasm,—in
fact they never fail in curing all disorders of
the liver and Stomach.
