We are glad to see the spirit of improve
ment still going on in our midst.
The trial of Fransislstin and
Gilmore null, for kidnapping a colored
man named John Brown, some menthe
ago, took place at Lancaster last week.
They were convicted, and sentenced to
five years each in the prison of this coun
ty. Kendrick was found guilty of murder
in the second degree and Sentenced to
eleven years and six months imprison
ment in the Eastern Penitentiary/

JEALOUS DANCERS.-A_ French and a
Spanish creole dancer both appeared on
the stage together in Melbourne, Aus
tralia, some time since, when the creole
drew thunders of applause, in the preju
dice of the Parisian. The Parisian fell
to the floor in distress, was enraged and
the two fell upon each other, tore hair
and scratched until the poor creole was
carried bleeding and senseless from the
stage. Then there was a row, iu which
the instruments in the orchestra were
broken and other damage done, while the
ladies screamed and fainted.

"GET THE GLASS Erse."—A one-eyed
man at Chicago, whose empty socket
had been fitted with a glass orb to make
him look well on his marriage day, was
so highly pleased that he straightway
got drunk and returned to the oculist
with five one-eyed companions for similar
treatment, tendering
~payment for the
whole. The lucky operator told the
party to wait till they bicame sober, and
so lost the trade ; for when he became
sober the marrying swain preferred to
stand treat on red-eye rather than glass
eye.
air A young lady, residing at New
burgh, on the line of the Baltimore and
Ohio railroad, having been disappointed
in a love affair, left the house a few
nights since, went to the railroad track,
and having thrown her clothes over her
head, deliberately laid her neck upon one
of the rails, and remained there until a
train ran over her, killing her instantly.
A. physician in Cincinnati, Ohio,
had, for some time past, been much an
noyed by depredators, who drank up the
milk left at his doorstep at an early hour.
One'day last week he left an emetic in
the pitcher, and soon after the milkman
had passed; the doctor found a police
man in a neighboring alley "making his
returns."
. eir Messrs. Corcoran & Riggs, the
largest banking firm south of Mason and
Dixon's line, predict that business oper
ations will return to their even tenor in
less than sixty days, when the South
shall return to its senses and behold its
prostrate business interests.
Cr Capt. John S. West, a friend and
companion-in-arms of Gen. Walker, the
fillibuster, has gone to Trusillo to ob
tain his remains for burial at Nashville,
Tenn., the home of.his father.
