"Light !—more Light still !!! "
WideAwakes;--Atteation
The Marietta Lincoln Club will please
meet at the Town Hall, this (Baturday)
evening at half past seven o'clock, A
full attendance is requested, as business
of interest and importance will come be
fore the meeting ; especially that of pro
curing more uniforms and torches.
All persons who feel an interest in
perfecting 'the equipments and opera
tions of this beautiful and effective or
ganization in our midst, as also those
friends of Lincoln, Hamlin and Curtin
who desire to unite with it, are also re
quested to attend the meeting.
It is desired that the name and resi
dence of every friend of Freedom who
needs naturalization, be handed to the
proper Committee at this meeting, that
proper measures may be taken to com
plete that work in due season, The
time is short; let every one, therefore,
who knows any such case report it imme
diately.
Also—let every voter who does not
know positively that he is assessed, re
member that it must be done before Sat
urday, the 29th inst.—only one week is
yet left for that important requisite !
Friends of Protection !--of Free
Homes In Free Territories for Free
Men; and of Free Speech and a Free
Press every where !—Friends of Lincoln,
Hamlin and Curtin and our County
Ticket !--:the first day of the "irrepres•
Bible conflict" in our State approaches
rapidly. Equip yourselves fully—take
the field well prepared for every duty—
close up yohr ranks—and forward to the
ballot•box and to victory !
Our Wide Awakes have shed not
a little light and glory on our Borough.
With something more than the old Rip
Van Winkle spirit, they met for organ
ization on Tuesday evening, the 11th
inst., and enrolled 80 names. The next
evening they met again and enrolled
over 60 more. On the 13th, they col
lected $142.00 for equipments. On the
14th the President of the Club went to
Philadelphia and selected and engaged
the uniforms and torches, On Monday
he was telegraphed to, that $3O more had
been paid, and he engaged more equip
ments, On Tuesday night the last in
stalment of the equipments was received,
through the exertions of Mr. C. D. Me
haffey, and other friends in the city, who
had them forwarded in advance of the
Express. There were now over 200
Wide Awakes enrolled, and they had
but 136 sets of caps, capes . and torches
—all that could be obtained in season
for love or money. These were distribu
ted that evening, and under Capt. Shaff
ner, his Lieutenants and Sergeants, and
Chief Marshal Col. • Mehaffey and Aids,
an impromtu parade and torch light
march was made through town, eliciting
the admiration of all who beheld it.—
Just before leaving the Hall for the town
parade, Mr. James Batt, foreman of T.
C. Child's Door and Sash Factory, pre
seated to the Club a beautiful Pioneer's
Axe, manufactured out of wood by him-
self, which was received by the President
on behalf of the Club in a few neat re
marks and then passed over to M r. Satn'l
Haines,
.the Pioneer of the Club, by
whom it was carried at the head of the
procession.
On Wednesday morning (and aga'n in
the evening) a special train carried the
Wide Awakes and un-uniformed mem
bers of the Lincoln Club, togther with
many ladies and gentlemen, to the Great
meeting in Lancaster; where, in both
processions, by day and by night, our
•'Marietta boys" won many expressions
of admiration by the beauty of their uni
forms and the appearance and deport
ment of the men. Marietta may well be
proud of her Wide Awakes, and their
spirited and prompt action in this matter.
s r FATAL ACCIDENT.—On Thursday
of last week Frank Schweitzer, an em
ployee of the Columbia Rolling Mill ,was
caught by a car of the Rolling Mill
Railroad and jammed against a pile of
rails opposite the Mill. His thigh was
fractured and discolated and he was oth
erwise injured, externally and intern
ally. He lingered in greal suffering un
til last Tuesday. The above we clip
from Saturday's Columbia Spy, and,While
in this connection, we may say the Co
lumbia Rolling Mill is now in successful
operation under its present owners,
Messrs. Maltby & Case, who are enter
prising gentlemen and have done much
to stimulate business in that borough
since the resumption of the rolling mill,
ilirThe Lancaster Examiner says that
the preparations for the Fair next week
are nearly completed, and that every
thing is the best and ,most .substantial
manner. The Secretary states there has
been an unusual number of entries made
up to this time. Should the weather
prove fair, this promises to be the great
exhibition of the season. We hope our
farmers and mechanics will continue to
see the propriety of making our own Fairs
the finest county Fairs in the Union.

READING AND COLUMBIA RAIRROAD..-
The Directors of the Reading and Co
lumbia Railroad met at Ephrata on the
13th inst. Capitalists from New York
were present who offered to build the
road, including grading, masonry and
superstructure, making it ready for lay
ing for $600,000—579,000 less than the
Engineer's estimate. They also offer to
take $400,000 of stock of the road in part
payment, only asking the people along
the line of the road to take $200,000 of
stock to secure its completion. Of this
required sum $140,000 is already subscib
ed. The Directors will meet again at
Manheim on Tuesday, October 2nd, at
which time a final answer must be given
to the contractors.—Columbia Spy.
larThe advertisement of Spangler &
Patterson will be found in another col
umn of this week's paper, by which it
will be seen that they are as full as ever
of goods to supply their customers.—
There can be no good reason for going
abroad for any thing is their line when
we have such superior stocks of goods at
home and at prices too, that we think
cannot be lower outside of the wholesale
houses in the city. Their supply of
Decorative Wall Paper is really hand
iome and cannot fail to please every
taste. How good paper can be got
ten-up to sell so cheap is a mystery
to us, when we consider the whopping
bills we have to pay for printing paper.
Their assortment of Carpets is also
better than any we have looked over be
fore.

Holloway's Pills.—Never Despair—Some
thing that never fails.—Fever and Ague. To
the sick it is of little consequence how they are
cured, whether from a rational view of the dis
ease or by rules defined for the guidance of the
profession, so long as the cure is certain
and expsditous. To a suffering man the ques
tion as to the relative merits of quinine or cal
omel is uninteresting. The faculty may
wrangle and discuss their various theories, but
Dr. Holloway's treatment dispells doubt ere
the disciples of Esculapius have finished the first
stage. In the west, 'ilolloway , s Pills are the
only remedies which effect a speedy and radi
cal cure without danger of relapse. Read the
advertistrient elsewhere.
AGE & DEDILITY.—As old age comes creep
ing on, it brings with it many attendant infirm
ities. Loss of appetite and weakness impair
the health, and want of activity makes • the
mind discon tented and unhappy: in cases where
old age adds its influence, it is almost impossi
ble to add vigor and health, and although many
remedies have been tried, all have failed, until
Bterhare's Holland Bitters were known and
used. In every case where they have been em
ployed, they have invariably given strength and
restored the appetite. They have become an
agent for this alone, and are used ly many peo
ple who are suffering from loss of appetite and
general debility. In cases of long standing
chronic diseases, they act as a charm, invigorat
ing the system, thus giving nature another op -
portunity to. repair physical injuries. See ad
vertisment in another column. •
