The concluding ceremonies •of the Odd Fellow celebration on Friday eve ning last, took place in the Odd Fellow's Hall, in the St. John' House, by an es say on Odd Fellowship, from Prof. Simon S, Rathvon, of Lancaster, formerly of this borough, who, by the way, was the brat N. 0,, of Donegal Lodge of Mari• etta, After the reading of the essay, Rev, Mr. Clawges and Maj. E. D. Roath made a few remarks when the assem blage dispersed. l iar We have received from the pub. fishers, J. B. Burr & Co , Hartford, Conn. a copy of the work entitled "Remarkable Characters and Memorable .Places of the Holy Land." It is nearly a luxury, amidst the flood of books on the Nation al Conflict and works of fiction of all grades, to come across- a work of the Sind now before us. 'The reputation of the author, Charles W. Elliott, a well known historian, who by purity and clearness of style, is acknowledged as one of the best of American writers; and the array of contributors to this work, comprising such eminent scholars and writers as President Woolsey, of Yale College, President Cummings, of Wes leyan University, Henry Ward Beecher , etc., should in itself be sufficient to com mand the attention of all general readers. The style is elegant and easy, and the matter is of such interest, and the nar ratives and descriptions so well told that one is drawn on, page after page, delighted and unwearied. The book is marred by no sectarian bias, while its tone throughout is uncompromisingly moral and exalted. The novel form in which the subjects of this work are pre sented cannot flail to please those even to whom the pages of ordinary history give but little interest, while at the same time, it bears so much of substantial instruction. Its illustrations, too, are very attractive features of the book, be ing some of the finest specimens of the Engraver's beautiful art. The Publish. ers have evidently spared no pains in the execution of the book, and merit the approval of the public for their enter-. prise and labor, through the extensive Bale which we are glad to hear the Work is enjoying. The Work will be sold on ly by Subscription, and Agents are want ed to canvass for it. For full particulars, address the Publishers, J. B. Burr & Hartford, Conn. Jno. W. W °may is the agent for this vicinity. sr Another Lodge of Good Temp lurs was organized in our borough, on Friday evening last, the present Lodge having become too large. The Doctor read medicine in Middletown and, having married there, (a daughter of the late Rev. We cannot depart from a long fixed rule, to not publish anything which emanates from an unknown source, although this communication contains many truths forcibly put. ow A party of sight-seers, headed by Col. Z/Lcrial Notitt4 TEN REASONS WRY HOSTETTER'S Stomach Bitters should have a place in every home. Because by invigorating the constitu tion and the flame they avert sickness. Because (especially) their use prevents the atmospheric poison which produces epidemics from taking effect upon the system. Because they cure indigestion and impart unwonted vigor to the stomach. Because they are the best appetizing medi cine at present known. Becaure they are the only preparation upon which persons of a bilious habit can safely te ly to keep the liver in good order. Because they tone and regulate the bowels, and invariably relieve them when constipated without causing undue relaxation. Because they strengthen the nerves, cleat the brain, and cheer the animal spirits. Because in case of an attack of spasms or billions colic they are the best thing that can be administered on the instant. Because they combine the three properties of a tonic, an alterative, and a nervine in their utmost purity and perfection. Because they are a specific Ague and Fever and all mtermittents, and with all their po tency as a preservative and a remedy, are as harmless as water from the mountain sprang. Scur.sices SEAWEED TONIC. This medi cine invented by Dr. T. H. Schenck, of Phila delphia, is intended to dissolve the food and make it into chyme, the first process of diges tion. By cleansing the stomach with Schenck's Mandrake Pills, the tonic soon restores the appetite, and food that could not be eaten be fore using it will be easily digested. Consumption cannot be cured by Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup unless the stomach and liver is made healthy and the appetite restored, hence tl'e Tonic and Pills are required in near ly every case of consumption z A half dozen bottles of the SEAWEED TONIC and three or four boxes of the MANDRAKE PILLS Will cure any ordinary case of dyspepsia. Dr. Schenck makes professional visits in New York, Boston, and at his principal office in Philadelphia every week. See daily papers of each place, or his pamphlet on consump tion for his days for visitation. Please observe, when purchasing, that the two likennesses of the Doctor, one when in the last stage of Consumption, and the othu es he now is, in perfect health, are on the Gov ernment stamp.
