C ONSUMPTIVES,
isEAD WHAT DR. SCIIENCK IS DOING.
DR. J. 11. SCHENCK
DEAR Ste. :-1 feel it a duty I owe to you,
and to all wno me suffering under the diseases
known as Consumption and Liver Compiati t,
to let them know what great benehts 1 have
received from sour PIIIMULIIIC Syrup and Sea
weed Tonic in bl) short a time. By the bless
ing of God it has toted me thug far.
Dr.:mheirck. 1 will now make my state
ment to you, as follows: About eighteen
months av, I was attacked with a severe
andcough, ad it settled on my lungs ; I could
not retain anything I ate, and suffered with
evening fevers and night eweata. I was very
much reduced. Tue whites of my e 3 es were
very yellow ; likewise MY sain ; my appetite
all gone, end unlit) e to digest what 1 did eat;
bowels s•vollen, irregular aud costive I was
very low spirited, and ha/ ouch vtulent spells
of coughing wilen 1 lay down at night and
it hen I arose in the morning that they would
last one or two hours.
I then would be nearly exhausted, and was
entirely unable to lie on my left side. 1 can
not describe my wretched sot - feting as 1 would
wish to do. Every organ in my uudy was dis
eased or deranged. Such was my situation at
this lime, and I was confined to toy bed from
the List of I ebruary, 1862, to June 18u2, not
able o sit up. 1 had the best of medical at
teudance the whole 01 he time. My cough
was so very bad that it racked tne very tutted.
1 at this tone raised a large quentity of thick.
yellow, offensive matter, sometimes with blood
and it was generally - accompanied by nausea,
and a furred a•rd Mek coated tongue. At the
time of coughing so badly 1 would have sharp,
shooting pants in my left side And
night sweats, and soleness all through my
whole chest; had much inward fever, pain in
my back and under my shoulder blades and in
the small 01 my back; and times so severe
that it would throw me into spasms. Now
my sician gave me up to die. (litters I had,
and the best of them, but they could do oath
log fur me, and at that time I was numbing
but skin and bone .1 then was in the western
par: of Missouri. In dune last we lett there
fur the East, and in August last we came to
New York, and 1 was 6 , 1 ieducel that I could
only walk a little with my husband's help.
Alter 1 had been here a short dine the salt wa
ter breeze made me feel much better far it
time and then I had again to call a physician
fur aid. We bad four of the best physicians
of New York on the diseases of the letugs, and
doctors of all kinds, bur of DO avail. ThvY
s id 1 was past cure, and that my lungs were
too far gone fur any one to cure me. But at
this time .L was oit thy feet about toe house,
not able to do much of anything. In Novem
ber last I grew WOleid, and the consumption
diarrhea set in and lasted about eight weeks.
We lied tried all and everything that 1 could
grasp at hue a dying person for my disease—
consumption and liver complaint—but of no
avail.
la January, ISG3, I was brought down
again on my tied, and was nut eXpacted to
live the night out. My husband stayed at my
side, and other friends, and they all gave me
up to die. At this time every one who SAW
me did not think 1 would ever leave my bed
a living woman. The first night I was at
tacked with spasms, and was deranged moat
of the time. A frumd, Mrs. Harris, came to
see me the last of the week, ands- biought the
:sunday Mercury. In it was au account of a
great core peirorniad by Dr. Schenck. She
read it to me, and it was so much like my
disease that 1 asked my hustaind to go and
see him fur Inc. At this tune 1 had given up
all hopes of ever getting well again, awl made
my peace with God, to be ready whenever he
called for me.
On the 27,h of January, 1563, my husband
called on Dr. Schenck, 32 Bond street, New
York, and 'AMA to him my case, with a re—
quest for him to call and see me, which he
did, and eXatilined me with the respirotneter.
When he was about to gu I asked tom if he
could cure me? his reply was; •-I cannot
dell, both lungs are diseased, and the bronchi
al tubes are atfected on both sides." Aud yet
he seemed to think there were lungs enough
mit to effect a cure if the diarrhea could be
stopped. He said in order to do this, he would
have to g , ve me Mandlase Pols in small
doses at brat, to carry ott the morbid matter,
and then, with astringents, he hoped to checa
it, which he did, but the constant coughing,
night sweats, and diar.hea had prostrated me
so that he was attaid my vital powers were
too much prostrated ever to rally, ant yet lie
seemed to theta if / could live to get enough
Pulinumc Syrup through my system to cause
expectoration there were lungs enough ieft
101 me to recover. Ile wished me to try the
Puhnon.c syrup and Seaweed Tunic at once,
saying it would do me no harm, if it did me
nu good. The first week it seemed to give
me strength, so that on Sunday after I sat up
in bed and ate hearty fora sica woman ; but
the next week I lost all hope and wished my
husband in..t to give me any more medicine.
do the doctor bad. warned him of this, and
when the media/ye was clearing out we apt
tem it made them feel somewhat restless. and
to persevere ; and he insisted on my taking
and now 1 feel the benefit of it. For aver
eight days I began to gate my strength, and,
with the ex. eption of a cold that put me baeic
some, I have been gaining strength of body,
my cough is going a way, and all my pains ari.
gone ; no soreness of the body, my bowels are
regular, and my breath is sweet, and 1 thank
God that I am now going about, anti sew and
read as weal as eve; I could. I have taken
sixteen bottles of the medicine, eight of each.
now have a pod appetite acid Jest well at
night ; my cough does 110/ trouble me in gett
ing up or lying don u. 1 would here say to
the afflicted with consumption or liver com
plaint, that Dr. Schenck is no humbug You
can rely on what he says. Delay not ; it is
dangerous to trifle with these diseases. If
you would be cored, go at once ; and any ose

HISTORY OF THE
GR EAT 11E13 El, LION
m E late rebellion stands out peculiar and
extraordinary in human eyries; and the
nisguincent scale upon Which the war has
peen conducted, collet Rote it one of the grand-
e 4 and most brilliant chapters of the world's
hisoy
Mr. Headley, of all writers, is perhaps best
qualified to portray the the stupendous feat-
tires of the Mighty contest. His pn vious
works on lest( momentous themes haA e placed
him in the first position, as a graphic and pow-
erfai deleniator of war scenes and characters,
and the inAgnitude and grandeur of the pres
ent suliict, impart to his pen the tire and vi
gor of a yet more exacted inspiration and fur
nisi' ample scope fur the highest exhibition of
his peculiar genius for military description.
Under his powerful pen the stirring scenes of
the War pass in re view with the vividness and
distinctness of a present and living reality;
while his great talent for condensation ena
bles him to embody everything of importance
in a compass just suited to she public wont.
From no other source can so clear and corn-,
prehensive an impression of the grand march
of events be obtained, so easily and agreeably
as from Mr. Headley's work.
Other histories have been issued before
Grant's Etcport and other official documents
were su omitted to the government, and there
fore unreliable. r. Headley has delayed the
completion of this till those documents 1.0 es
mntial to cuthenticity and correctness could
be obtained.
