of one of the ferry flats (and we will here
remark that a more lovely looking group
of God's fair creatures never decked - a
flatboat) for the York county shore ;
once on the other side, the party wee
led a few yards up the hill to a fine flat
f ground, where, a few days before, a
subetantial and large dancing platform,
and music stand had been erected ; a
long table for the viands ; seats for the
married and eingle ; little hiding places
swept oat and seats for two only erected,
intended for luvyers (and be assured
there was a good representation of that
class); the old and lurid spring cleaned
out, and, indeed, everything that could
be thought of to make a hot day pleas
ant and cool. Scarcely had Keifer, with
his five assistants, time to puff and blow,
or lugging themselves and Schmled's
ig fiddle" up the bill, until some
anxious ones longed to hear , a "saw on
Fuesey's entrails." Of the music we
seed not epeak,—enough that some gen
tlemen of the "olden time," and their
dames, quid not remain•quiet under its
charming strains, but set a-part a portion

indeed ended, to the complete satisfac
tion of all. The dancing was kept up
briskly all day, notwithstanding the in
tense heat, although the large, high trees
all around served to completely shade
the platform, At 12, noon, a sumptuous
repast of cold meats, tongue, (and
Heaven knows there was no scarcity of
live tongue) cakes, pies, ice cream, can
ned fruits, with a little mixing of "whin
key.tea," claret, bourdeaux, home-made
currant wine, together with the finest
Adam's ale "on draught." At 3 o'clock,
cakes and ice cream; 6 tea; 8 cakes
and ice cream. About dusk three large
"nigbt•hawks" or boat lanterns were lit
and hung upon the trees overhanging
the platform, but the appearance of a
shower, made a hasty "pack-np" neces
sary. We arrived home without acci
dent of anykiod, just as a kind of water
can sprinkling was descending. Thus
passed one of the most pleasant Nation
al holidays within oar recollection.

viz: that for once within his recollec
tion of over thirty years, all the tailors,
hatters, shoemakers, masons, &e., of
Marietta, were sober and at work on the
toning of the sth day of July. We
cannot answer Mr. G's. question bat
John Bell, tailor, does ; he says : "By
Jabers the town's reformed and long it
has needed it 1" It was, we understand,
—for we spent the fourth in old demo
cratic (oh we beg pardon of the loyal—
we meant to have said copperhead)
York county—the most quiet and ord
erly fourth passed within the "recollec
tion of the oldest inhabitant" of our
town. Our prayer is, "may it ever be
thus."
ar. an°. Hieetand, about 25 years
ago, a resident of this place, died very
suddenly in Lancaster. He was found
!ling on his back, with his clothes on,
across the bed, at a hotel, where he had
seen stopping a day or two, on Thursday
lemming last. The landlord says he re
tired early, in apparent good health.
The examining surgeon pronounced the
cause of death, apoplexy.

Tun BOUNTY LAIN :—The Supreme
Court decision on the Bounty Law is
announced. Justices Agnew, Strong
and Reed sustaining the constitutionali
ty of the law, whilst copperheads Wood.
ward and Thompson dissent. This was
not at all unexpected. The bench
stood the same on the Legal-tender
question. Had the law not been sus
tained destruction and ruin would have
been brought upon thousands of persons
who loaned their hard-earned money i to
sustain their country in her greatest
time of need. Justice Agnew, who de
livered the opinion of the court, says
that beyond all doubt the Legislature
possessed the power to enact a law to
confer upon these municipalities the au
thority to borrow money, issue bonds for
the same, and levy taxes to pay the in
terest debt, on the ground that the pay
ment of bounties, relieving persons from
compulsory military service, clearly in
volved the public welfare, and was not
merely a transaction for the benefit of
an individual. The opinion is long, able,
and incontrovertible, and ought forever
put to the blush the minority of the
court who, upon no question involving
the common interests of the country,
growing out of , the rebellion, that we re
member, have given an opinion to sus
tain the country.—lt is fortunate that
we have upon the bench of our highest
court a majority of loyal men of the
highest character, in whose hands all
constitutional questions which they may
be called upon to decide, may be repos
ed with perfect confidence.
The Bounty Tax collector of the Bo
rough has had some difficulty not only
with copperheads, but pretended loyal
men too, in collecting this tax, upon the
plea that the Bounty Law was unconsti
tutional. This decision will, we suppose
"knock the wind out of their sails."
®' It will be remembered that some
time since Dr. Hinkle initiated a move
ment in this place, to get up a fund for
a Lincoln monument, or, if snfficient
could not be obtained to erect a monu
ment here, to contribute the amount
raised to the Washington city monument

These Bonds are now worth a handsome
premium, and are exempt, as are all the Goy
ernment Bonds, from State, County, and Mu
nicipal taxation, which adds from one to three
per cent. per annum in their value, according

The Notes of this Third Series are . precisely
similar in form and privileges to the Seven
Thirties already sold, except that the Govern
ment reserves to itself the option of paying in
terest in gold coin at 6 per cent. instead of 7.
3-10ths in currency, Subscribers will deduc
the interest in currency up to July 15th, at
the time when they subscribe.
The delivery of the notes of this third series
of the Seven-thirties will commence on the
Ist of Jime, and will be made promptly and
continuously after that date.
The slight change made in the conditions of
this THIRD SERIES affects only the matter
of interest. The payment in gold, if made,
will be eqinvalent to the currency interest of
the higher rate.
The return to specie payments, in the even
of which only will the option to pay intact
n Gold be availed of, would so reduce and
equalize prices that purchases made with six
per cent. in gold would be fully equal to those
made with seven and three-tenths per cent. in
currency.

The Great Popular Loan of the People.
Less than $230,000,000 of the Loan au
thorized by the last Congress are now in the
market. This amount at the rate at which it
is being absorbed, will all be subscribed for
within two months, when the notes will, un
doubtedly command a premium, as has uni
formly been the case on closing the subscrip
tions to other Loans.
In order that citizens of every town • and
section of the country may be afforded facili
ties for taking the loan, the National Banks,
State Banks, and Private Bankers throughout
the country have generally agreed to receive
subscriptions at par. Subscribers will select
their own agents, in'whom they have confi
dence, and who only are to be responsible for
the delivery of the notes for which they re-

HOW TO USE THE REMEDIES
In diseases of the Blood, Humors on the
Face, or any and every part of the body, use
Extract Sarsaparilla, applying to Pimples and
all external Humors or Eruptions, the Im
proved Rose Wash.
Use the Extract Buchu for all diseases re
quiring the aid of a Diuretic, except those of
the Urinary Organs, such as Gonorrhma and
Gleet ; in these use the Extract Buchu and in
ject with the Improved Rose Wash.
