THE I:ECIT EXHIBITION :—The Farm.
er's an d Gardener's Society of East
()Unseal bold a grand exhibition of fruits
a nd flowers on Monday evening last.
The display of Strawberries was quite
loge , n umbering upwards of sixty vari
eties, and the quality superior to any
that* have heretofore seen. The Tri
omphe de Gaud and Russel's Prolific
. ser e the leading berries in point of size
grhi flavor. The Wilson's Albany con
ernes to retain its reputation for pro
doctivenoss, but is regarded by connois
seurs as of inferior quality. A dish of I
exceedingly large, light-colored symmet
rical berries, exhibited by Michael Ram
ler, (without a name) were regarded as '
the most beautiful fruit on exhibition.
13enry M. Engle exhibited twenty-six
varieties, in addition to nearly as many
seedlings which be has originated. The
committee on Seedlings recommended
the cultivation of No. 5, 11. and 16, of
Mr. Engle's new varieties ; they regard
ed No. 16 as much superior to the Pea
body and Wilson, of which it is a cross.
The committee on named varieties
made favorable mention of Triomphe
Do Gaud by Jacob and Peter Roth, of
York county; Simon Greybill, Cyrus
Lenhart, S. H. Purple, Barr Spangler,
aid Henry M. Engle. Also of Wilson's
Albany by Simon Greybill and Henry
M. Engle; Russel's Prolific by Barr
Spangler and Henry M. Engle ; French
:codling by Daniel Engle; Hovey seed
ling by Mrs. A. N. Cassel, and Jacob
and Peter Roth, which fully sustained
the reputation of that long established
variety; Austin by Cyrus Lenhart, Jon.
A. Garber, and S. H. Purple.
The Tribune varieties exhibited by
Benny M. Engle did not meet the ex
pectations of the members of the society ;
they must do better to sustain the repu
tation given them in New York.
There was a good display of Cherries.
J.J. Libhart exhibited three varieties,
of which the Ohio Beauty was the fin
est' Daniel Engle six varieties; Miss
Margaret Child two varieties, one of
which was very (toe; John Musser four
varieties, his Governor Wood and Early
Richmond were superior of the kinds ;
Franklin nipple two varieties, both
very good ; G. W. Mehaffy, three vari
eties; Mrs. A. N. Cassel fine specimens
of May Dukes; Simon Greybil], Bleed.
ing Hearts,
Beautiful Bouquets were exhibited by
Miss Susan Brown, Mrs. A. N. Cassel,
Mies Anna Libhart, Miss Addie Spang-
lor, Mrs. Barr Spangler, Miss Lizzie
Gwen and Mrs, Robert Ramsey. A
tine Lilly by Miss Lizzie Curran. The
committee on Flowers were so euraptur
rd with the beauty of the bouquets that
they could only discriminate in the taste
fulness of arrangement, and this they
awarded to Miss Addie Spangler.
Should the Summer be a favorable
one for vegetation, we shall expect an
exhibition in the fall that will eclipse
any of the previous ones.
er We are to have a concert on Fri
day evening next, at the Town Hall, by
the "Kum. ORCHESTRA" of Columbia,
We can assure our readers that they will
bo highly entertained by these perform
ers. The performances of Professors
Keifer and Schmied alone are worth
more than the price of admission, wbilst
the members of the orchestra, have, we
are told, under the tuition of Prof.
Washington H. Keller, become excel
lent musicians. We hope to see the
ball crowded, for a musical treat may
really he looked for. ,
tar The Pittsburg Oil and Mining
journal, in speaking of. the "Eagle Pe
troleum Company" says : "The usual
business announcement of this company
has just been made. The capital is lim
ited to a proper ratio of property. The
Company has a well under way. The
atEcera are energetic, respectable bnsi
ncss•men and intend to push their en

Rodenhauser in another column, who
has opened a Clothing and Gentlemen's
tarnishing store in the room formerly
occupied by John Crull, on Market
street. Mr. R. has been for the past
four years in David Hanauer's Colum
bia establishment, and comes here to
permanently establish himself in busi
ness. A. little of everything can be
found amongst his stock, such as cloth
ing, boots, shoes, hats, &c., &c.
fir A bold but unsuccessful attempt
was made on Monday night last, to
break into the safe of the County Treas

io the safe, filled itwith powder and dis
charged it, but without doing any dam
age. They are supposed to have been
P hiladelphia burglars.

the following gentlemen were elected
for the ensuing year : Samuel Hopkins,
John Kline, Stephen F. Eagle, Samuel

OW Rend the advertisement of HALL
80 1 New York, in another column.
l'he or al
lowing colored persons to ride in the
I torso Cars in Philadelphia, is still
pending. The last No., of the German
town Telegraph gives the following ac
count of a scene in which Stephen
Smith, formerly of Columbia, played an
unwilling part: "Some days ago a lady
of Germantown. who was about stepping
into an Eighth street car down town to
ride up to Eighth and Green, saw Ste-'
phen Smith, a very respectable and
wealthy colored person, on the sidewalk,
who was on his way a-foot to the same
destination. She invited him to get in
also, but he declined on the ground that
the conductor would not allow him.
Sho insisted, and he got in. No sooner,
however, was he inside; than the con
ductor ordered him out. The lady told
the conductor peremptorily that he
should not get out. The conductor said
the rules of the company compelled
him to turn him out. The lady replied
that she cared nothing for the rules of
the company so long as they were in vi
olation of the laws, and that she would
have him prosecuted if a band was laid
upon Smith. The conductor then said
that he would put the car off tne track.
The lady was equal to the emergency,
and replied with increased energy, that
that also was a violation of the law, and
she would prosecute him for a nuisance
in obstructing the public highway.
This ended the controversy with the
good Christian lady's triumph, much to
the amusement of the other passengers
in the care, not one of whom objected
to the company of Stephen Smith.

ck - A small pox case was imported
from Harrisburg to this place, a few
days since, which caused considerable
talk and some threats made against the
family who received him,—he being no
relation of the family whatever. Com
plaint was made. to Chief Burgess Stence
who had him removed to the almshouse
at Lancaster.
tgo - Wednesday Evening's Lancaster
Express says John B. Taylor, a Tailor
from Marietta, was kicked by a mule,
at B. B. Martin's Coal Yard in that city.
Word was sent to his family in this
place, that he was 16113 d—his wife went
down after him on Wednesday morning
and returned with him in the noon train,
with' load of—whisky on the brain.
John, we fear, is a hopeless case of in
ebriation.
Col. W. Li. Eagle informs us that
the festival at the Atheneum room, on
Tuesday evening, netted forty dollars to
the monument fund. A pie-nie is now
talked of by these gentlemen. It is to
be hoped that no lakewarnmess will be
allowed to prevent the going-on of this
laudable undwrtakiug•.

WALL BRUSHES,
A new article in this market, and far superior
to any other in use. A few reasons why
First.—They are free front twine, which is
affected by the lime, and liable to rut, caus
ing the falling out of the bristles.
Second.—The bristles are inserted in the
wood, or body of the brush, when green, which
when dry, causes them to be held firmly in
their place ; any subsequent soaking or shrink
age furls to affect them.
Third.—They are made of Bristles exclusive
ly ; many kinds being composed, in part, of
whalebone.
. .
Fourth.—They contain more bristles for the
size, and are as cheap as the ordinary hind.

Notes of all the denominations named will
be promptly furnished on receipt of subscrip-
tions
The Notas of this Third Sories are precisely
similar in form and privileges to the Seven-
Thirties already sold, except that the Govern-
ment reserves to itself the option of paying in-
[crest in gold coin at 6 per cent. instead of 7.-
3•]otbs in currency, Subscribers will deduct
the interest in currency up to July 15th, at
the time when they subscribe
The delivery, of the notes of this third series
of,the Seven-thirties kill commence on the
Ist of June, and will be made promptly and
continuously afte r that date
The slight change made in the conditions of
this THIRD SERIES affects only the matter
of interest. The payment in gold, if made,
will be equivalent to the cuirency interest of
the hither rate
The return to specie payments, in the event
of which only will the option to pay interest
i n Gold be availed of, would so reduce and
equalize prices that purchases made with six
per cent. in gold would be fully equal to those
made with seven andthree-tenths per cent. in
currency
