MEM
tur At a lute meeting of the Union
League of this Borough, the following
.eamble and resolutions were adopted,
the occasion of the notice of the
death of Martin Van Buren Cochran, a
member of Marietta Council :
Whereas, We are suddenly called
upon to record the death of a member,
FL Brother of the Union League, a Sol
dier, yea, a warrior, yet in time of war,
‘ief, seemingly, is private, while count
less numbers mourn for the lives of those
dear to them, who so nobly have fallen
in battle, it may seem idle to some, that
p eclat attention should be called to the
lose of any one man ; but we would be
derilict in duty if we failed to pay this
feeble tribute to one we knew so well,
and who died so nobly, therefore
Resolved, That the officers and mem
bers of this League have learned with
profound regret, the death of their
friend and fellow-member, Martin Y.
Cochran, who united himself with us,
while absent from the army, on a brief
visit to his home.
Resolved, That in Martin V. Coati.
rail the community and the League lost
a true lover of his country, who, actua
te(' by a sense of duty and-true patriot
ism, left his home, family, and friends,
and was among those who were the first
to enrol themselves in 'defence of their
country's Flag, and by his valor raised
himself to notice and promotion.
Resolved, That the members of this
League are requested to attend his fri
tters' from the home of his family.
Resolved, That a copy of the above
preamble and resolutions be sent to the
family of the deceased, and be publish
ed in The Mariettian.

T O HOUSE-CLEANERS.
WALL BRUSHES,
A new article in this market, and far superior
to any other in use. A few reasons why :
First.—They are free from twine, which is
affected by the lime, and liable to rot, caus
ing the falling out of the bristles.
'Second.—The bristles are inserted i A the
wood, or body of the brush, when green, which
when dry, causes them to be held firmly itt
their place ; any subsequent soaking or shrink
age fails to affect them.
Third.—They are made of Bristles exclusive
ly; many kinds being composed, in part, of
whalebone.
Fourth.—They contain more bristles for the
size, and are as cheap as the ordinary kind.
Sold exclusively by JOHN SP ANGLER,
AT H/8 HARDWARE STORE.

See what the roost popular and widely cir

From the "Dispatch" of February 25, 1865.
We take pleasure in calling the attention of
our readers ti the announcement of Messrs.
Devaugh fit Co.'s Great Sale of Jewelry, Silver
Ware, and Fancy Goods, in our advertising
columns. We are personallly acquainted with
the members of this firm and know them to be
gentlemen of steiling worth and integrity.
Their stock of goods, for variety and extent,
we have scarcely seen paralleled.
From the "Mirrorof Fashion," March 1, 1565
Messrs. Devaukh & Co.'s Great Sale ofJew
elry, etc., opened on the 16th ult•, and we
venture to sey that no finer display of goods
was ever exhibited by any establishment in
this city. The ladies thronged their bazaar
almost to suffocation, although the streets were
rendered near]) impassable by the melted
sno A , and slush. We predict for them a won
derful success.
From the "Ledger," February 2s, 1865.
Our lady friends should visit the extensive
establishment of Messrs. Devaugh 6; Co.'s
No. 15, Maiden Lane, if they wish to indulge
themselves with a sight which they will long
remember, Such a profusion of elegant
Watches, Chains, Rirgs, Earrings. and, in
short, of Jewelry of every name, kind and de
scription, we never before witnessed. Their
silver and plated ware is superb and almost
oasts into the shade the other splendid estab
lishments which have long been the boast of
our city. It is estimated that their stock is
worth not less than one million of dollars.
