SATURDAY, APRIL 15, 1.855
0- Our town illumination and cele
bration ir c ommemoration of the taking
of Richmond and the surrender of Lee,
which took place on Wednesday evening
last, wos
a grand affair, notwith
etaniliogthe rainy weather. The Mount
Joy Baad, the members of which are all
members of our Union League, "did the
rosin," for the occasion. The proces
sion was formed at the Union League
gall, under the Nlarshalship of Lieuten
ant Abraham Cassel, late of the 107th
P, IT. and preceded by the Band, march
ed through our principal streets--nearly
every house in the more thickly built
sections being nicely illuminated ;
amongst the more tastefully arranged on
Market street we may mention Dr.
Hinkle's, Col. W. H. Eagle's, Mrs. Re
becca Spangler's, J. R. Diffenbach's
James Wilson's, but in fact so many
wore brilliantly lit up that it Would be
impossible to mention all. At a late
hour, it having become known that Col.
S. B. Thomas, Deputy Secretary of the
Commonwealth, was on a visit to Col.
Eagle, the band, followed by quite a
large crowd, proceeded to the residence
of the latter gentleman and serenaded
and loudly called for Cot. Thomas, who
appeared at the hall door, and in a few
and well-timed remarks, entertained his
listeners for a short time, after which
the gay and highly entertained crowd
dispersed, well pleased with Grant, Col.
Thomas, themselves and "the rest of
mankind."
a This afternoon (Saturday) will
be the last opportunity to take any of
the Borough Loan, as the tax will soon
be levied on the remaining indebtedness
of the Borough. We cannot see why
property holders in the Borough, with
money to lend , do not embrace this op
portunity to secure a good and paying
investment and thus reduce their taxes.
We understand that we were in error in
nur last in charging a copperhead with
peddling funds into the township for in
vestment, whilst so inviting an opportu
nity offered in town ; we are assured
"by one who ought to know," that it
was, as our informant tartly said "ped
dled by a woolly head." The fact is,
wytwithstancling this correction, that
the funds belonged to a very strong cop
perhead family, and sought an invest
ment where it woe not wanted and re-
I 'need it where it was, fearing, no doubt,
, that a general reduction of the Borough
tao: filidit follow lending at home. One
comolation is that the lenders will have
a portion of , the facreased Borough tax
to pay, havingeonsiderable town proper
.ty to pay tax on.

Patriotic
To the citizens of the Borough of Marietta;
Fellow Citizens :—We congratulate you up
on the brightening prospect of a favorable
issue, and speedy close of the rebellion. For
four years our country has been convulsed
and devastated by war, during which, the
worst passions of the human heart were de
veloped. Sundering the nearest ties of kin
dred and creating deadly enmity where confi
ding friendship before existed. The vicissi
tudes of the war naturaly created conflicting
opinions upon the most practicable mode of re
storing peace to the country, Much as men
may have differed upon the cause of the war
and the measures adopted to crush the rebel
lion, it behooves us all to acknowledge the
iivine guidance through this terrible conflict,
and also to co-operate heartily in the best
means of liquidating theclaims that the ne
cessities of the war has created.
Your corporate authorities, our predecessors,
have patriotically labored to furnish the men
and means required to fill the demands of the
National Government, and have thereby in
curred a War Debt of nearly Twenty Thous
and Dollars, chiefly on loans at a period not
exceeding ninety days. We would ask your
careful consideration of the facts we present
in favor of converting this indebtedness into
a loan running from one to five years. Il
raised by immediate taxation, the tax of this
year will be eight times as great as the Borough
Tax has heretofore beer, ; thus the citizens
whose tax has heretofore been ten dollars will
have eighty dollars of Borough Tax to pay
before the 15th of May next, butby furnishing
money on Borough Bonds this indebtedness
can be paid off so gradually that it will
scarcely be felt by even the heaviest tax payer.
The collection of the tax will then be made
when the country is at peace, and we will .be
free from the numerous calls for money that
war now creates; the tax will then reach
many who new from minority, are exempt
from taxation, but who, in the enjoyment of
the blessings of peace, should be required tq
pay a portion of war debt.
The real estate of the Bbrough is legally
held for this debt, and as the uwnership there
of is undergoing frequent changes, it is not
probable, by cleating the proposed loan, that
the present owners may ever have much of
the debt to pay.
The'loan will be issued in Bonds of from
$5O to $lOOO, with coupons attached, bearing
6 per cent, interest, payable semi-annually,
which being exempt from all taxes, makes the
interest equal to 7 per centum. These bonds
are a lien on all the real estate of the Borough.
We believe you will therefore see that it is
your interest to aid, so far as you can, in con
verting this loan into bonds, by subscribing
for as much of it as you can afford to.
The Nubseription Books are now open at
The First National Bank, and will be left
there until the Fifteenth day of April, when
if the loan is not taken, immediate taxation
will have to be resorted to.

The ploperty of the Lancaster and Venan

Ninety• One Acres of Land, in fee simple, sit
uated on the eastern bank of Big Sandy Creek,
and on either side of Stony Run, which flows
through the ; ruiddle of it, in French Creek
township, Venango county. It presents a
large proportion of boring ground, amounting
to at least sixty acres.
Part of the land is covered with fine oak
timber, well calculated for the manufacture of
coal oil barrels, this alone is of great value in
that locality where thousands of barrels are
wanted daily to hold the rich products of sur
rounding wells.
It is evident also that large deposits of bitu
minous coal exist in the elevated portions of
this tract; they are, however, undeveloped.
Within one mile east and west coal mines are
worked on an extensive scale.
It is the determination of this company to
fully develop their whole territory. Subsea •
hers to stock can feel satisfied that no effort
will be spared on the part of the officers and
managers to bring out the oil, which must be
within reach of faithful labor. We invite a
careful examination of our prospectus by all.

and every assurance that the stock of the com
