ITeyh School, Jura., 17, 1865. Mr.
Baker you he Lind enough to
insert in your culutnns the following re
port of the attendance of the pupils of
the High School, up to December IG,
1864, the commencement of our Christ
mas vacation. The whole number of
days taught up to that time was sixty
two, It will be seen that the attend
ance in general is very regular, which
is very gratifying to the teacher, as well
as very conducive to the progress of the
school.
Half days in the report are counted
whole days. A report of the conduct
and progress cf each pupil would doubt
less be interesting to parents, but that
will be omitted for the present. When•
it becomes possible to append to each
name the mark "Good," that report
will be published. In the . meantime I
would most earnestly ask parents to vis
it the school and see" for themselves
whether or not their children and the
teacher are in all respects such as the
students and teacher of a High School
ought to be. They would thus greatly
assist the teacher in his, by no means
easy, task. Respectfully '

The usuarquiet of our town was
disturbed on IVednesdaY evening last,
by the cry of tire, which proceeded from
the suburb-, commonly known as "Irish
town," where an old stable belonging
to Samuel Maloney's estate, bad been
converted into a dwelling and occupied
by Henry Haines, was found to be on
tire and in a very short time was burned
to the ground. The fire was communi
cated to the building by the pipe pass
ing through the floor. The lurid flames
shot out their forked tongues as if to
invite the surrounding old wooden
buildings in their embrace, but fortun
ately the night was calm and no further
destruction followed. The Hook and ,
Ladder, the Pioneer, Young America,
Hose Carriage and all our fire appara
tus, was, as usual, on the ground in good
season, but almost every thing in the
water way was frozen up and but little
could be done but to confine the flames
to the one building, which was done.
Mr. Haines lost nearly all of his furni
