The de monstration of 1840 was entirely laid in the shade. There were four stands for speakers, on the common, where the convention was held, at which U. S. Senator Harlan, of lowa, Gen. John Cochrane, of New York, Judge Myers, of Clarion county, Col. John W. Forney, Col. R, B. Ceipenter, of Kentucky, Major J. F. Frueaff, of Blair county, Sergeant Barclay, of the Army of the Potomac and a half a dozen Lancasteri ens spoke. In the etening Gen. Carl *chur,z spoke in the English language, at Fulton [fall, to a crowded house. This was, unquestionably, the finest pro duction of the day. After Gen. Schurz was through the meeting adjourned to take part .in the torchlight procession, then forming in front of the League House. Upon the whole, it was truly a gala day to every loyal friend of the Union who witnessed it. ,ar The Cops held a meeting •in the town hall, on Thursday evening at which Andrew Jackson Steinman, of Lancaster, ventilated himself, followed by a one legged Dutchman, who saki it was use less to try to whip the South, for this war had truly decided that one souther ner was equal to four yankees. This "did not go down well," and a fuss was on the tapis, but which was quietly sup pressed by the more cool of the bystan ders. Several McClellan soldiers—one' with an arm off, lost at Antietam—being listeners cried out aloud that it was "a d—d lie,"—that wo had as good sol diers as the world over saw. t r We observe in a late number of the lowa Plaindoaler a notice of the death or Edmund A. Dickey, formerly of this borough. Speaking of his death, the Plaindealer says : "Mr. Dickey died on the steamer on his way up to St. Louis. lie was an old and estima ble citizon of this state (Iowa) and al• though several years over military age, ho enlisted early. in the war and served until discharged for disability. Having recovered ho again enlisted with the "Hundred Days Nice and closed his patriotic career within the service of his country." Mr: Dickey left. Marietta about thirty years ago. Mr. Henry Cassel, the (Meat citi zen of this borough, died on last Thurs day morning, at the advanced age of eighty-nine years. Mr.. Cassel, at one time, was one of the leading merchants of our place, and, in speculating times, longtone by, he was the head of what was then called "Henry Cassel's Bank." lie erected some of the finest houses then built in the place—a number of which yet stand—but in the financial crisis which soon after followed, he went under, and passed the balance of his long life in retirement. He will be buried this afternoon at one o'clock. ire The uuterrified democracy bad a pole raising at Hollowell's—at the cor ner of Elbow Leas - and Front street— on Thursday afternoon, at which Honor able Isaac Ellmaker Hiester spoke. Mr. LI. made a very unfavorable impres sion there, having got into a personal controversy with two old line wbigs, who chided him for his want of patriot ism. lie compromised however, by placing a $5 bill on the counter and calling all up to drink. It is said 33 was just the numbs, at the pole raising, including three Union len, who were present as lookers on. ILF' Marietta was not behindler sis ter districts in the Union pageant at Lancaster. A committee of our Union League went to Reading and secured a band of sixteen performers, at a cost of WO to accompany our delegation, and between three and four hundred marched into line. Oopperheadism has no bet ter hold in this borough than the fellow hid who attempted to hold a pig by its -shaved and greased tail. sr Republicans, Unionmen, Patriots do not fail to go to the polls on Tuesday next and perform the duty—the sacred duty—of a freeman, by casting your vote in a good, great and glorious cause, and thereby put to rout and cast to the winds every vistage of the hope of success of the home traitors, by triumphantly electing a purely Union ticket in Oc tober. illar The copperheads . behaved very shamefully at Lancaster, on Wednesday last, by throwing stones at banners, flags and into the procession. Any cause that requires such upholding is surely in a siding or stinking condition as •is copperhead treason. =I or Goods selling at fair prices at the house of Eyre & Landell, 4th and Arch Philadelphia. Tieasuiy gives notice that subscriptions will be received for Coupon Treasury - Notes, payable three years from August 15th, 1564 with semi.annual interest at the rate of seven and three-tenths pet-cent per annum,—principal and interest both to be paid in lawful mcney These notes will be convertible at the option of the holder at maturity, into six..per cent gold bearing bonds,,payable not less than five nor more than •twenty years from their date, as the Government may elect. They will be issued in denoimnations of $5O, $lOO, $5OO, $l,OOO and '55,000, and all subseliptions must be for fifty dollars or some multiple of fifty dollars The notes will be transmitted to the owners free of transportation charges as soon after the receipt of the original Certificates of De posit as they can be prepared. As the notes draw interest from August 15, persons making 'deposits subsequent to that date must Pay the interest accrued from date of note' to date of deposit Parties depositing twenty-five thousand dol- Lars and upwards for these notes at any one time will be allowed a commission of one quarter of one per cent. which will be paid by the Treasury Department upon the receipt of a bill for the amount, certified,Oo by the officer with whom the deposit was made. No deductions for commissions must be made from the deposits Special. Advantages of this Loan It is a National Savings Bank, offering a higher rate of interest than any other, and the best secuilly . Any savings bank which pays its depositors in U. S. Notes, considers that it best circulating medium of the is pay inn country, and it cannot pay in anything better, for its own assets are either in government se- curitics or in notes or bonds payable in govern- ment paper. It is equally convenient as a temporary or permanent investment. The notes can always be sold for within a fraction of their face and accumulated interest, and are the bestsecurity with banks as colaterals for discounts. Convertable into a Six per cent, 6-20 Gold Bond In addition to the very liberal interest on the notes for three years, this privilege of convers ion is now "whrih about 3 per, cent. pet an num, for the current rate for 5-20 Bonds is.pot less than 9 per cent. premium, and before the war the premium on 6 per cent. U. S. Stocks was over 20 per cent. It will be seen that the actual profit on this loan, at the present mar ket rate, is not less than ten per cent.. per an num. Its exemption Franz State or Municipal Taxation But aside from all , the advantages we have enumerated, a special Act of Congress exempts all Bonds and Treasury Notes from local tax- ation. On the average, this exemption is worth about two per cent. per annum, accord ing to-the rate of taxation in various parts of the country.. l It is believed that no securities offer so great inducements to lenders as those issued by the government. In all other forms of indebted- ness, the faith or ability of priyate parties, or stock companies, or seperate communities, on ly, is pledged for payment, while the whole property of the country is held to secure the discharge of all the obligations of the United States. • . While the government offers the most liber al terms for its loans, it believes that the very strongest appeal will be to the hiyalty and patriotism of the people. Duplicate certificates will be issued for all deposits. The party depositing must endorse upon the original certificate the denomination of notes required, and whether they are to be issued in blank or payable to order. When so endorsed it must be left with the officer re- ceiving the deposit, to be forwarded to the Treasnry Department. Supseriptions will be received hy„the Treas urer of the United States, at Washington, the several Assistant Treasurers and designated Depositaries, and by the First .National Bank af Marietta, and by all National Banks which are deposi tariee of public money, and all respectable BANKS AND BANKERS throughout the country will give further infor motion and afford every facility to subscribers . . A PURE AND POWERFUL TONIC, Corrective and alternative of wonderful effica cy tn 'disease of the Stomach, iLiver and Bow • els ; cures Dyspepsia, Liver Complaint, Head ache, General Debility, Nervousness, Dopiest sion of Spirits, Constipation, Colic, lntermitten- Fevers, Cramps and Spasms, and all complaints of either sex, arising from bodily weakness whether inherent in the system or produced by special causes. Nothing that is not wholesome, genial and restorative in its nature enters into the compo sition of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. This popular preparation contains no mineral of any kind, no deadly botanical element ; no fi ery excitant, but it is a combination of the ex tracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants with the purest and mildest of all diffusive stimu lants. It is well to be forearmed against diseaso, and so far as the human system can be protec ted by human means against maladies en gendered by an unwholesome atmosphere, im pure water and other external causes, ' lIOSTETTER'S BITTERS may be relied on as a safeguard. In districts infested with Feuer and Ague, it has been found infallible as a preventative and irresistible as a remedy, and thousands who resort to It under apprehension of an attack, escape the scourge ; and thousands who ne glect ro avail themselves of its protective qual ities in advance, are cured by a very brief course of this marvelous medicine. Fever and Ague patients, after being plied wi th quinine for months in vain, until fairly satu rated with that dangerous alkaloid, are not un frequently -estored to health within a few dayshy the use of Hostetter's Bitters. The weak stomach is rapidly invigorated and the appetite restored by this agreeable to nic, and hence it works wonders in cases of Dyspepsia and in less confirmed forms of Indi • gestion. Acting as a gentle and painless appe rient, as Well as upon the liver, it also invari ably relieves the Constipation superinduced by irregular action of the digestive and secretive organs. Peisons of feeble habit, liable to ner vous attacks, lowness of spirits and fits of lan . gour, find prompt and permanent relief from the Bitters. The testimony on this point is most conclusive, and from both sexes. •The agony of Bilious Colic is immediately assuaged by a single dose of the stimulant, and by occasionally resorting to it, the return of the complaint may be prevented. Last, but not least, it is The Only Safe Stim ulant, being manufactured from sound and innocuous materials, and entirely free from the acid elements preSent more or loss in all the ordinary tonics and stomachics of the day. No family medicine has been so universally, and, it may he. truly added, deservedly popular with the intelligent portion of the community, aS,HOSTETTER 7 S: BITTERS.
