Marietta, Saturday, July 16, 1884
lir A few days since we received a
letter from Porter Ropp, of this borough,
now attached to Co. K. 45 P. V. V.,
and stationed near Petersburg. Porter
was in the battle of Cold Harbor, in
which, he says, this company behaved so
bravely and was so dreadfully cat up—
their Captain was wounded three times
and Lieutenant Henbane' was also
wounded. Porter very patriotically
says: "I have been in five fights, but,,
thank God, I am still unhurt, and read)
and willing to dash in again in defense
of the glorious , stars and stripes. I wish
we bad some of the Marietta Copper
heads to place them in our front that
they might be near their rebel friends."
Porter speaks enthusiastically of the
bravery of their Colonel (Curtis) and
says when the color guard aas shot
down he picked up the colors and plant
ed them again himself and was wounded
iu so doing. He says the Forty-Fifth
is called "Burnside's Bull Dogs" because
they go and do whatever is required of
them.
ow We understand a great nuisance
was perpetrated in our Town Hall Park
a few days since, by an officer of the bor
ough. One of the returning refugees
had the misfortune to loose a very fine
horse from cholic ; he was taken to the
park to be allowed to roll, &c.. and died
there. It is said a couple of dollars
were left to have him dragged out of
town and buried, and instead of useing
the money in that way, a hole was dug in
the park, the horses lege cut off and the
body tumbled into the hole. We do
think this was perpetrating an inexcusa
ble nuisance and we do hope the chief
burgess will have the horse exhumed,
removed'siiid the place sodded as before.
such conduct as this from a borough of
ficer is highly reprehensible.
sir From Saturday until Thursday
noon, the "martial drum and fife" re.
sounded through our streets, drumming
tip 'Hundred Days M en." Charles R
Groh, sun of Mr. C. C. P. Grosh, of the
"First Pennsylvania Reserves" started
a company and by Wednesday evening
succeeded in getting up thecomplement
and at noon on Thursday they took the
cars for Harrisburg. Through the lib
erality of some of our citizens, over two
thousand dollars were raised as a local
bounty. Capt. Urcigh will furnish us
with a list or officers and men for pub
lication, as soon as mustered in. We
also learn that the Borough Council has
agreed to furnish the residue over and
above the subscription raised, to insure
an individual bounty of fifty dollars to
each volunteer ; for once, our borough
has shown a liberality in the matter of
bounty. The boys have adopted the ti.
tie of "S. B. THOMAS RIFLES," a com
pliment to Col. Eagle's late company.
ga - The "over-the-river refugees" are
returning to their [mimes. During Mon
day, Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday
the crowds of "returners" were so great
lbst an additional ferry company, com
posed of Henry S. Lihhart, Jacob Song
master, John Keine, etc., "started-in"
sod all the ferries kept very busy.

with which he was playing on the 4th of

sirAn Ear -Ring was lost on Saturday
last, somewhere between the town hall
and Col. J. W. Clark's residence. The
ring is highly prized by the owner on
account of being composed of the hair
of a deceased sister, and would be of
very little value to the finder. See ad

SPECIAL NOTICES
ir.r A number of years have elapsed since
the introduction of Hostetter's Celebrated Bit
ters to the public. The prejudice existing in
the minds of many persons against what are
denominated patent medicines at first greatly
retarded its sale ; but as its virtues and mer
its became known, this butler of prejudice was
overthrown, and the demand increased so rap
idly that in a few years scarcely a village ex
histed in the United States in which the afflic
ted had , not experienced the benefits arising
from the use of the "Bitters," and at the pres
ent day there are to be found, in all part§ of
the world vouchers for the great merits of the
article_ No greater cure fur Dyspepsia.can be

ne expense is a mere trifle-25 cents—and
we are confident no person will ever be with

saved hundreds; we have the certificates to
prove it. Office, No 56 Cortlandt Street, New

Sick Headache and want of Appetite Incident
Those feelings which so sadden us, usually
arise from trouble or annoyances, obstructed
prespiration, or eating and drinking whatever
is unwholesome, thus disturbing the healthful
action of the liver and stomach. These organs
must be relieved, if you desire to do well.---
The Pills, taking according to the printed

valuable Pills, and, the Soldier will quickly

would increase the relaxation. This is a
great mistake, for theae Pills will correct the
liver and stomach and thus remove all the
acrid humours from the system. This medi

health and strength follow as a matter of

These Ronda are issued ender the Act of Con -
Kress of March Bth, 1864, which provides that
all Bonds issued under this Act shall be EX-
EMPT FROM TAXATION try or anaer any 4
state or municipal authority. Subscriptions'''.
to these Bonds are received in United States
notes or notes of National Banks. They are
TO BE REDEEMED IN COIN, at the plea-
sure of the Government, at any period not ic,•s
than ten months nor more than forty ;car s
from their date, and until their redemption
FIVE PER CENT. INTEREST WILL BE
PAID IN COIN, on Bonds of not over one
hundred dollars annually and on all other
Bonds semi-annually. The interest is pal
able oa the first days of March and 5,pr,...r0-
'her in each year
Subscribers will receive either Reg.iiturvd
or Coupon Bonds, as they may prefer. !tej
istered Bonds are recorded on the books c‘i
the U. S. Treasurer, and can be transferred
only on the owner's order. Coupon B,)ads
are payable to bearer, and are more ee:,re
nient for commercial uses
Subscribers to this loan will have the oP
tion of having their Bends draw interest from
March Ist, by paying the accrued, interest
coin—for in United States notes, or the notes;
of National Banks, adding fifty per cent. fo;.
premium) or receive them drawing intere,
from the date of subscription and deposit
As these Bonds are
Exempt from Municipal or State Taxation,
their value is increased from one to three Per
cent. per annum, according to the rate of:tax
kyles in vatious parts of the country
At the present rate of premium on gold
they pay
Mt... Eight Per Cent Interest
incurre.ncy - , and are of equal convenience as
a permanent or imporary investment
It is believed that no securities offer so
gest inducements to lenders' as the various
descriptions of U. S. Bonds. In all other
forms of indebtedness, the faith or ability of
private parties or stock companies or seperate
communities only is pledged for payment,
while for the debts of the United States the
whOliiiropertY of the country is holden to
secure the.piyment of both principal c.nd in
terest in coin
These bonVimay be subscribed for in sums
from sso,up to my magnitude, on the same
terms, and are dins made Equally available
to the smallest leader aad the largest capital-
ist. They can be converted into money at
any moment, and the holder will have the
benefit of the interest
It may be useful to state in this connection
that the total Funded Debt of the United
States on which interest is payaLle in gold,
on the 3d day of March, 1864 2 was 5765:',963,-
000. The interest on this debt for the coming
fiscal year will be $45,937,12G, while the cus
toms revenue in gold for the current ftsct.l
year, ending June 30th, 1564, has been so fur
at the rate of over $100,000,000 per annum.
It will be seen that even the present gold
re - venues of the Government are largely nr
excess of the wants of the Treasury for the
payment of the gold interest, while the recent
increase of the tariff will doutitless raise the
annual receipts from customs on the:, same
amount of importations, to $150,000,000 per
