Also, to Messrs. W. and 7'. Girod, H.
Wolfe, and A. Emswiler, for services
rendered on the evening of the 18th ul

ow Dr. W. Beane has left our place
and gone to Bainbridge to practice his
profession. We were sorry to part with
the Doctor, but as our loss is his gain,—
for we understand there is a wide field
for him in his new loeation, Dr. West
having deceased but recently—we must
content. We wish him every suc
cess in his new home. Dr. Henry Lan
dis succeeds Dr. Beane in the drug busi
ness and has removed his office to the
fame place.
ay' Col. F. S. Pyfer of Lancaster, has
returned to that city. Col. Pyfer was
taken prisoner at the battle of Chicka
mauga, and has spent some five or six
months in Libby prison, six weeks of
'which time ho was an inmate of the hes
vital, Buffering with the typhoid fever.
tile gives a sad account of the sufferings
of the Union prisoners, especially the
Enen and non-commissioned officers, who
are treated with a brutality shocking to
the feelings of any one having the least
bit of humanity in his heart. The offi•
'core as a general rule fair a little better
from the fact that most of them have
•money and are able to purchase a few of
'the necessaries of life.
Aar Capt. Themes B. Barton, former , .
.1y of the Lancaster "Union Guards"—
Co. B, Pennsylvania Reserves—died in
- that city on Monday afternoon. Capt.

years skyvice; which was placed in the
First Regiment Pennsylvania Reserves.

the Peninsula campaign, when he was
prostrated with typhoid fever, from

terminated his earthly caraer. .
41iir Our borough has become quite a
Tebacco depot. A Baltimore 6rm hav
ing purchased a warehouse property and
intend:enlarging it for next year's busi-
MOBS. Daily the cross street between
the Cross Keys tavern and Hopkins ,
corner is literally ctowded with tobacco
teams, delivering their cargoes. The
raising of the weed has become a great
business in this county. It is said that
4'1,500,000 was grown last year.
40- The officers of the First National

with a paid up capital of 5100,000, with
the privilege of increasing it to $300,000.
The new bank has secured Detweiler's
Banking House for its place of business.
eir At the late Democratic (Copper
head) State Convention, held in Phila
delphia, we find the following Lancaste-
Timis figure : John Maparren was one
'of the Vice Presidents, and H. G, Shultz
one of the Secretaries ; Patrick Mc-
Evoy was placed on the electoral ticket
for this district ; George Sanderson and
Henry A. Wade elected delegates to
the Democratic National Conventi on at
Chicago; and R. R. Tshudy, A. J. Stein
man and S. H. Reynolds appointed
members of the State Central Com
mittee.
' lir We regret to learn that we are to
loose Mr. Isaac S. Geist, from our High
School. Mr. G. has been offered a po
aition at the State Normal, Millersville,
where he will at once report himself.—
We regret to part with so valuable s so
loyal and useful a citizen. He goes,
however, where there is a wider field
for the display of his talents. As a
teacher, we believe he has no superior
in the State.
66- Yesterday (April Ist) was a busy
day in our place ; we do not remember,
in our recollection, of having seen so
many "fittings" on any "first of April."
The day was pleasant and everything
appeared to go as" merry as a marriage
bell."

up capital of $140,000, with privilege of
increasing it to $300,000, and will be
ready to commence business as soon as
circulating notes are forwarded by the
Department at Washington. The new
bank will occupy the building at present
used by Gyger & Co., Bankers. The
following is a list of the Directors and
officers ; John Gyger, President ; Thos:

Or A vacancy having occurred in the
Naval Academy Cadetship for the 9th
Congressional district (Lancaster coun
ty), Hon. Thaddeus Stevens, M. C. for
the district gives notice through the
county papers that it will given to the
boy in attendance at the public schools
of the county who passes the best ex
amination before a Board composed of
leading citizens. This is an excellent
plan.
Er The Presbyterian church was
filled on Sunday evening last, to hear
Rev. Mr. Clawges' lecture on "the in
adequacy of secular education," for the
benefit of the Ladies Patriotic Circle.
Mr. C, acquitted himself with his usual
credit for ability and earnestness in a
good cause.
CW' The residence of the late Samuel
Johnson, on Market street, was sold on
Wednesday evening last to Miss Kate
Flury for $3440. This is certainly one
of tho most desirable residences in the
borough.
