or Wanted. A boy between fifteen
and sixteen years of age, to learn the
Printing business. Inquire at this office.
Marietta, Pa., Saturday, February 27, 1861,
fir From the report of the work of
the Ladies' Patriotic Circle during the
past year, it is found that the expendi
tures in material, freightage, &c., have
been sixty-six dollars and sixty-one
cents (6G:61). 192 yards of cloth have
been made into clothing, &c.; nineteen
boxes and five barrels of stores sent to
the various hospitals.
The Ladies beg leave to acknowledge
the kindness of the citizens during the
year, who, by their generous aid, have
enabled them to succeed in their efforts
to relieve the wacts of the soldier.—
Thankful for the encouragement already
received, they still desire to go on, and
they ask their friends to continue to aid
in supplying the means.
Attendance at the meetings is again
requested. Materials will be furnished.
and work for hospital use will be re•
earned.
There appears to be a rumor
afloat here that the rebs are again about
making a push towards this state ; upon
what grounds or authority this ruiner
was started we cannot divine—but true
or false,—wu think our Areteran soldiers
are nuw wanted at their respective posts
and they should return to their regl-
Monts immediately, for the rebs, finding
many 'of . the men beam on furlough,
might make a demonstration somewhere,
which behooves us to be on our guard.
Every veteran, should, therefore, make
his urrangenients to re-join his regiment
Mitriediately.

some time since, The victim wag a
young man twenty one years of age, son
of Mr, Isaac Flogendobler, who during
the evening attended a dance at the
tavern of Lawrence Smith, near the
rolling mill. While there, he became

a girl. This was quieted, however, and
the stranger and girl left the house to

or The Soldier's Fair at Lancaster
has immensely outstripped the wildest
calculations of the most wild. The
Murdock reading on Wednesday eve
ning was a complete success. Governor
Curtin being in the city, spoke at Fill
ton Hall. In our next we will give the
eoanalal result of this roost.laudible and
reeestiful undertaking.
tar The Concert on Monday evening
at the M. E. Church was a most com
plete success, in every respect. The
audience was large and the entertain-
Mont very fine. The assistance which
Dr. Worrall received from the Columbia
vocalists added very much to the enter

Letter from Sera-Maj. E. Wisner.
Camp of the 79th I'enn. Vol. Infantry,
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Feb. 13, '64.
Since my last letter the let Division,
9th Army Corps has changed camp
from the west to the east side of town.
The 79th is encamped immediately on
the left of Fort Wood : a most beautiful
and more healthy place than the site
of our old encampment. A short dis
tance to the front is Mission Ridge :
range of hills made historical by the
bravery of the "Army of the Cumber
land" on the memorable 2fith of Novem
ber, 1863. On the right rises old Look
out like a dread monitor watching all
below, while far to the south, mountain
after mountain rises in succession until
the most distant seems like a blue vapor.
To the north may be seen the serpentine
course of the Tennessee river, winding
among the hills until lost is the distance.
Mission, or more properly Missionary,
Ridge, derives its name from the Mora
vian missionaries who settled thereon
and established schools for the benefit
of the Cherokee Indians, in 1798.
Through the influence of these mission
aries the indians were becoming civil
ized ; they had begun farming and
building towns. The success and pros
perity of the Cherokees seemed to i-nnoy
the white settlers who desired to possess
the lands of the Indians and drive them
beyond the Mississippi river. Finally
when General Jackson became Presi
dent of the United States, he with Mr.
Eaton of his cabinet and the legislature
of Georgia succeeded in having the
Cherokees tranvfi•rred west of the Mis
sissippi. Nlany relics and vestiges of
indiuu occupatiOn yet remain.
The 79th Penn. Vols. has re-enlisted
and entered' the'vete ran More
than three-foarths of the `required num
ber to retain the old organl2atlon have
been ZwOrti in. The fats -are being
made out and in a few.days we expect
to be mustered- out and immediately
mustered" in for three years,:ueless:soon
er discharged. The goiiiirement has
rather a' novel way of - preventing its
sobliers becoming citizens during the
ceremony of mustering out and in. It
is obviated by swearing the soldier- in,
fur three years to COMP, before being
mustered out for the time he has seived.
Many of the regiments responded
promptly to President Lincoln's first
call for 75,000 men and as there is a fair
prospect of the rebellion being speedily
c•ru.shed, f-il desirous of being among
those who have been through the war
from the beginning to the ei.d.
The regiment expects to get home
about the 10th of March. The men will
then be furloughed for thirty days, at
the expiration of which the regiment
will re-organize and remain a short time
in the State for recruits and conscripts.
There will 13 , 3 many glad hearts •in Lan
caster county when the news of the re
enlistment of the 79th is received.--
Many will be happy in anticipation of
seeing a father, a brother, or a son who
has been absent for two years and a half,
fighting the battles of his country ; while
some will be pleased when they think
that the re-enlistment of the 79th makes
the quota of Lancaster county 300 less ;
he not deceived ; this joy may be, short
lived.
The health of the Regiment is good.
The Curs are running regularly 'and ra
tions are abundant; the Army of the
Cumberland is itself again.
