OUR NEW BANK NOTES.-Mr. Bowman,
Cashier of the First National Bank of
Marietta, returned from Washington a
few days since, bringing with him the
$5 bills of our Bank. We copy the
following description of the " Fives"
from ao exchange :
As the introduction of these new bills
may be said to open a new era in the
history of our national currency, a short
description of the national bank note
will not be inappropriate in this con
nection. It may be stated at the start,
by the way, that the plates, designs and
appearance of all these notes will be the
same for all the States, with the single
and necessary exception of the local
names and numbers.
The face of the , no,te,a,may briefly
described as follows :
At the left hand corner of the face is
a signette representing Columbus sight
ing land. He is standing on shipboard,
and in the act of Pointing ant the shore
'of Guano. _Hard, while a figure kneeling,
is seen pointing km the same direction,
and looking into ;the facel4 , the:'great
discoverer. In the immediate ! fore-
Around is another figure with a cross in
clasped bands, and kW ; face tnrned,
heavenwards, in thanksgiving to the
Almighty. The back-grouud is occu
pied by a priest and other figures, while
on the sail above the word "live" is en
graved iu highly ornamental letters.—
This design, it will-be noticed, is his
torical, and this is In compliance' with
the Wish of Pretident Lincoln, who
hinted hid desire on the subject in his,
letter inviting proposals.
The vignette ou the left hand side of
the face ructiles, au
,allegui,icai repre
sentation. which is also another idea of
Mr. Liucolu's. It consists of a picture
at Columbus presenting America, in the
form of au Indian ina.dt:ri,' to the Old
World, persenilieti by three, tignres t re
presenting Europe,
In the foliage overhead is the figure
five; handsomely iirniimented.
The border er the lace is composed of
the word fide, tLnill wink,' consisting of
grape leaves, and the , bgure 5, aiterna-,
ting in palm's: The novel ,peculiarity,
of the border is that no two words, fig-.
ores or scrolls are exactly alike, having
heeu varied purposely, so that the couir
terfeiter may not be able to imitate the
note .by repeating stied! portions, us is
trequeutly noticed in spurious money.
In order to imitate these Dotes the
conuterleiter will tied it necessary to
engrave the whole with the minutest

Marietta, Pa., Nov. 2d, /SO.
The former inscription will he com
mon to the national bank noteS in all
the States, while the latter 'gives an il
lustration of ;he necessary deviation re
quired by local names and number.
In the lower margin of the face are
found the 'words, '"Act . approved Feb.
25, 1861" The spaces beneath each
v*nette are left vacant for the signa
tures of the president and cushier of the
bank.
UM
The back of the note displays another
beautiful exhibition of ingenuity and
taste. The principal vignette is a large
oval, extending over the treater part of
the back, r&producing Vander lyn's fa.
nious picture in the rotunda of the Cap
itol at Washington, representing the
landing of Columbus. The picture is
printed in black, as are also the legends
which surround it. The *upper legend
is as follows
This note is receivable at par in all parts of
the United States in payment of all taxes and
excises and hil:Aber dues to the United States
except duties on imports;, and also for all
salaries and all other debts and demands ow
ing by the United States to individuals, ,orpo
rations and associations within the United
States, except interest on public debt.
The lower legend is as follows :-L
Every person making an engraving, or aid -
i , ‘g to make or engrave, or passing or attempt
ing to pass, any imitation or alteration of this
note, and every perion having in possession a
plate or impression made in imitation of it, or
any.paper made in imitation of that on ivhich
this note is printed, is, by act of Congress,
ap
proved 25th of February, 103, guilty of fel.-
ny, arid subject 'o a fine not exceeding one
thousand 'dollars, or imprisonment not.exceed
ing fifteen years, or both.
The border and pieces are printed in
green. The bordor is made up of the
figure son a shield repeated. In the
top border occur the words ''!national
currency."
The end piece to the left contains an
oval with , the coat of arms of Pennsylva
nia, eagisitely engraved, the name of
the state being engraved in the cloud
work. The oval at the right end con
tains the eagle on the national shield,
with the cypher "U. S." in the sky.—
The two .upper corners have each the
word "five" engraved on the face of the
scroll work, while the two lower corners
have the figuree 5, engraved on lathe
work.
