OUR NEW BANK NOTES.-Mr. Bowman,
Cashier of the First National Bank of
Marietta, returned from Washington a
few days since, bringing with him the
$5 bills of our Bank. We copy the
following description of the " Fives"
from ao exchange :
As the introduction of these new bills
may be said to open a new era in the
history of our national currency, a short
description of the national bank note
will not be inappropriate in this con
nection. It may be stated at the start,
by the way, that the plates, designs and
appearance of all these notes will be the
same for all the States, with the single
and necessary exception of the local
names and numbers.
The face of the , no,te,a,may briefly
described as follows :
At the left hand corner of the face is
a signette representing Columbus sight
ing land. He is standing on shipboard,
and in the act of Pointing ant the shore
'of Guano. _Hard, while a figure kneeling,
is seen pointing km the same direction,
and looking into ;the facel4 , the:'great
discoverer. In the immediate ! fore-
Around is another figure with a cross in
clasped bands, and kW ; face tnrned,
heavenwards, in thanksgiving to the
Almighty. The back-grouud is occu
pied by a priest and other figures, while
on the sail above the word "live" is en
graved iu highly ornamental letters.—
This design, it will-be noticed, is his
torical, and this is In compliance' with
the Wish of Pretident Lincoln, who
hinted hid desire on the subject in his,
letter inviting proposals.

beautiful exhibition of ingenuity and
taste. The principal vignette is a large
oval, extending over the treater part of
the back, r&producing Vander lyn's fa.

itol at Washington, representing the
landing of Columbus. The picture is
printed in black, as are also the legends
which surround it. The *upper legend
is as follows

The end piece to the left contains an
oval with , the coat of arms of Pennsylva
nia, eagisitely engraved, the name of
the state being engraved in the cloud
work. The oval at the right end con
tains the eagle on the national shield,
with the cypher "U. S." in the sky.—
The two .upper corners have each the
word "five" engraved on the face of the
scroll work, while the two lower corners
have the figuree 5, engraved on lathe
work.
