SATURDAY, - OCTOBER 17, 1863, Or A most shocking death occurred on Friday night last, near the lower station. It appears the Copperheads bad a kind of "swarm" meeting at Mau- Pelt's Lager Beer Saloon, at the eastern end of town, where German Woodward :mien could "get beirish free blow," and toward midnight a "free fight" followed "free lager," and it is supposed in the fight one of the combatants was knocked senseless on the railroad track and awoke in eternity, having, during the night, been run over by , three or four burden trains. In the morning the 'mangled remains of the German, whose name we did not learn, were found ad joining the track, so frightfully cut up and disfigured as almost to defy venlig nitiOn.• Esqtrire'Auser held an inquest ; verdict, killed by being run over by a railroad train. The man left a wife, who was> confined to bed at the time. He `was" employed at Haldeman's furnace. iiis mangled remains were put into a store•box (without being taken to his home) and buried the same morning. gar The grand mass meeting at the "Perry lionse," on Monday evening, 'as a most'complete fizzle. John Wise —balloon-blow•horn Wise—attempted to address the unterrilied Cops, but be ton he got through his harangue against the administration, a general cry was raised for young Fulmer, a young and patriotic son of the "mine host" of the "Perry," who took the stand and delivered a patriotic Union speech, Wise, in the meantime seeing the turn of things, took the back track for Houseal's —the great centre for Copperheads—and, it is supposed, hid himself behind the paunch of that worthy landlord. In a word, the meet ing, gave three cheers for Curtin and three groans for Woodward. Thus end ed the mountain of labor, which brought forth a mouse, for the Cops finding themselves outnumbered by patriotic Union men, left disgusted with "man's '' . tuhninunity to man," and took another 4lass of lager, swearing vengeance on the d—d abolitionists. MUSIC, SWETT Music.—l am pleased to learn that the singing class connect ed with the M. E. Church, conducted by Miss Salle Kelley, the celebrated and accomplished singer and teacher of vocal music, promises to be of vast bene fit to each scholar, to the church and, eventually, to the family circle and the day school ; and in fact everywhere, re warding each one who sings in order, time and tune, with good round notes, [musical notes.] Too little attention has been given to the delightful study and practice of vocal music (sacred mu. sic) by the young and rising population. I trust that many others may learn to read music, so as to be able to sing with the spirit and the understanding. This class will compare very favorably with any other in our county for number of scholars, good order and good musical talent,. Ido not wish to confine music to one place, but would be glad to hear our nightingales sing in every grove and on every tree. I would have the happy art to enliven and add variety 'to the village school and still huger in the holy sanctuary. I would like, to see every son and daughter a worshipper at the shrine of song. MELANCHOLLY SUICIDE.—A young, Un married man, about 22 years of age, by the name of Isaac Lemon, residing in Martin township, this county, committed suicide on Thursday evening of last week, by banging himself in hi*, father's stable. Deceased was .a worthy and in dustrious young man, but in delicate health, being consumptive, and on the day of his disease had worked for a neighbor in the forenoon, and in the afternoon was out gathering chestnuts. Toward evening he complained of feel ing unwell, and went to see a physician, but did not meet him at home. After supper he left the house without making any remarks, and without causing any suspicion of bin intentions to his pa rents, who supposed that he was only going to a neighbor's house, close by, as he was sometimes in the habit of do ing. About 9 o'clock his mother no ticed that their neighbor's light was extinguished, and be not returning, she felt some anxiety about him, and took a lantern and went out and called him ; receiving no answer, she naturally looked into the out-buildings, and finally opened the stable door, when, imagine her feel ings, on beholding her son suspended by a cordfrom the upper rail of the rack, with his left 'arm resting in the trench and his. kneea resting on the ground, stiff and cold in death. No cause, other than bis failing health, could be assigned for the rash act. On the Bth Instant, ABRAM tat S., infant non of Harry and Sallie W. Zook, of Columbia.
