SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1863. or On 'Thursday morning last we met an agreeable surprise in the unexpected "pop-in" of our old and valued friend, Mr. Thomas Sowerby, for several years the obliging pharmaceutist in Dr. Hin. kle's drug store. Mr. S. left here about three years since for Port Gibson, to engage in business, having resided there once before, but after the breaking out of the war he was conscripted and had to go—no $3OO exemption for Jeff Da vis—and was made Sergt. Major of the Regiment. After seeing hard service for over a year, he was taken prisoner in a skirmish near Vicksburg and bro't to Camp Chase, Cincinnati, and there took the oath of allegiance, and is now once more in the "land of the free."— Mr. S. says the people of the north can_ not forth any idea of the complete devas tation and utter ruin which this rebel lion has brought upon the south. G i r Dr. Hinkle arrived home on Sat urday evening last. Whilst probing— with his linger—the shattered ankle of a wounded soldier, at the Jarvis Hospi tal, Baltimore, some two weeks since, his finger, received a slight scratch, just sutficisnt to start blood, to which the Doctor paid no immediate attention, but went on amputating the limb. On . the following morning, however, the finger, hand, wrist and arm became so fright fully and painfully swollen, as to alarm the Doctor and confine him to his bed until a.day or two before he came home. Ile is now,-however, convalescing and expects 'to return to to the scene of his usefulness in a short time. Car We regret to learn that Mr, Jacob Roth, of Marietta, has received intelligence of "the death of his son, Al. bert Roth, which took place at Mem phis. He was buried on the 16th of August, '['he deceased was a member of one of the lowa regiments which par ticipated in the gallant campaign under Gen. Grant, and he was highly esteemed by all. who knew him. His early death will .be mourned by a• large circle of friends and acquaintances.—Lancaster 1i tress. or A. week or ten days since, we had a visit from Dr. John J. Sowerby, for merly of this borough, but now of the U'. S. Navy. - He looks remarkably well after having spent some ten mouths in the Gall of Mexico and before New Or leans. His vessel is now undergoint repairs, which done, the Doctor sill again be on the "briny deep." Don't forget the exhibition of the Farmers' and Gardeners' Society of East Donegal on Friday afternoon and even. jog, September 25th. A very fine dis play may be looked for. Tiie fourth instalment of the First National Banlvis called for, and, as thisis the last one, it is to be hoped that all will promptly . come forward.— See advertisement in another column. OVR PUI3LIC SCHOOLS.—The examina tion of the applicants for admission into the Sigh School, on Monday evening, resulted io tbs promotion of,the follow ing: 1. Annie Libbart. 2. Milton Routh. 3. Joseph Boughter. 4. Samuel E. Clark. 5. Annie Buchanan. 6. Clement'ne Stence 7. Florence Brooks. There were other applicants but failed in qualifications. The Board will hold an examination of the lowest class in the High School, at the close of the first month, and if there are any in the Secondary schools who have made the re quired advancement, they will have an opportunity to enter that examination, and if found qualified they will be trans ferred. If any who are members of the class now fail to advance with the class, such will again he transferred to the Secondary schools. We congratulate the_Board upon this wise plan ; it will not only have a ten dency of causing the . pupils to retain what they acquire (because they must make nse of it in the presence of_the Board), hut it will cause regular atten dance of those in that class. In our lait we urged the importqnee of every scholar being in school the first day, and we are glad to state that all the schools opened with nearly all they pupils in attendance. Now let this good beginning make a good end, by having a - regular attendance throughout the entire term. Parents, will you see to this? If you have a little work fat' Sallie or for Charlie, do not retain them from school ; five days in a week should belong to the pupill, at school. More discouragement is often given to pupils by retaining thou out of school, than by ussigni^g them difficult lessons. MARIETTA, September 14, 1863 Friend Baker : Some time Muce, you made an expression through your paper that Col. J. W. Clark was a going to be a Poor Director. Now your patrons would like to know what yon mean by a Poor Director? Is he poor in purse or that he Las not-calibre enough to perform the duties of his office ? Please explain in your next and oblige your friend, JOHN COYLE. Certainly, we will explain. We meant to have said that Col. Clark would make an intelligent Director of the Poor. We are glad to find Marietta to have at least one representative on the excel lent county ticlpt offered the Union voters of this county, and we hope to see Col. Clark run ahead of the ticket in this borough. Godey for October is on our ta ble, and we find it contains seven color ed figures and two plain figures—fash ions—in a word, is a gem for the fair sex.
