MARIETTA, SATURDAY, JULY 25, 1861.
0153 r This number closes the ninth year
of The Mariettian. We vill not issue
a number on next Saturday, but will
busy ourself during the week in Phila.%
delphia and elsewhere in trying to col
lect what us due is, and should we sue
ceed, as we hope we may, in collecting
outstanding accounts, we will resume
on Saturday following, August tth.—
We will enclose bills in this week's
number to delinquent subscribers at a
distance, in order that they may know
their exact indebtedness, the amount of
which we hope they will remit to us
without delay, which they may do at our
risk, omitting to register their letters—
as registering only furnishes dishonest
post office employees with the knowl
edge of the fact that the letter contains
money. As government small notes
can now be obtained everywhere, there
is no excuse for not remitting what is
duo us.
Ur The "First National Bank of
Marietta" is now fairly under way,
having opened for business on Tuesday
last. The Banking Room, fitted up un
der the directions of Mr. John H. Good
man, is admitted by all, to be one of the
finest east of Philadelphia. The coun
ter, desks, drawers, caseings, being
very handsomely grained in imitation of
oak by Harry Girod. The room itself
being large and having two windows in
front and two on the east wing, making
it very light and airy. By an adver
tisement in this week's paper, it will be
seen that Wednesday is discount day—
a very important day in the future for
tnany—and that 34) per cent. of the
stock is required to be paid by the 20th
of August.
ar Every member of the Union
League of the borough is earnestly re
quested to attend the next meeting, on
Thursday evening the 30th instant, for
the transaction of very important busi
ness. Let none be absent that can pos
sibly attend.
or Of the stores sent to Gettysburg
by the " Patriotic Circle" of this bo
rough, there were eight boxes of vari
ous articles; one barrel of dried rusk ;
one barrel of fresh rusk and one hun
dred and six loaves of bread.
Cr Quarterly meeting in the M. E.
Church to-morrow. Preaching in the
morning by Rev. Mr. Gregg, and in the
evening at 6 o'clock by Rev. Joseph

Fountain Pen, on Friday or Saturday
last. The fountain or holder is made of
gutta pereha—the pen—a large sized
one—gold. The finder will be suitably
rewarded, and no questions asked, by
leaving it at this office.
r In our list of donations to the
Patriotic Circle, Miss Franck's was put
down at one dollar, when it should have
been two dollars. Miss F. has shown a
commendable liberality with her means,
throughout this rebellion.
cr Et -Judge Vonderamith has raised
a cavalry company, which has been
named the " Lancaster City Troop,"—
It is now at Camp Curtin.
sikr The "Circle" will meet on Friday
evening next—the 31st instant—at Miss
Eliza Hopkins'.
air On the 15th inst., the body of a
man was recovered from the Susquehan
na, in the neighborhood of Fite'a Eddy,
this county, which is described as being
a person of about five feet five inches in
heighth, with black hair which had been
worn long. There was a thick twine
around• his body to which was attached
a lace boot.
On the 18th another body was re
covered at the same point, which is de
scribed as a man of about twenty-five or
six years of age, broad shouldered and
about five feet five in height, with sandy
hair and beard, the head partly bald.—
Both bodies were nude.
fir In order to prevent fruitless trips
to Lancaster by those seeking exemp
tion from the late draft, we will state
that the. Examining Board will hold
meetings for that purpose from the 24th
instant to August 28th. East and West
Donegal and Conoy townships will be
held on Thursday next, 30th, and Ma
rietta borough on Monday the 17th of
August, and Columbia borough on Tues
day 28th. It would be useless to go
before the day set apart for the partic

He and a young friend named Fullmer
were in bathing. Kemper was a good
swimmer, and swam across the creek,
asking his companion to follow; but the
latter being unable to swim refused to
go. When near the other side, some
boys cried ont that he was drowning
and threw a plank to him, but it was too
late. It was supposed be was seized
