MARIETTA, SATURDAY, JUICE 27, 1861, ea Rev. Mr. Gregg's sermon to the Cadets of Temperance will take place on to-morrow (Sunday) evening in the M. E. church. lir On Thursday last the panic be came so great—that the rebels were within a few - miles of Carlisle, and moving on to Elarrisburg with all possible haste, and would soon be in our borough—that several of our large merchants com menced packing up their goods, prepara tory to shipping them eastward. Every dispatch received after noon on Thurs day, depicted the "State of things" worse, and during the .evening droves of farm horses were seen passing through our place, seeking safety elsewhere.— Some of the frightened farmers had come with their stock from Franklin county, saying upward of 3000 horses had already been taken from that county. Or The Tobacco growers in this sec tion—and their name is legion—have been busy as nailors ever since the late rain. Every available patch of ground, even the long unoccupied water lots be tween the canal and river, are now ploughed up and put in Tobacco—all things favoring, there will be an im mense crop of the weed this season. ar Prof. James P. Wickersham of State Normal School at htillersville, on learning the necessity of a general turn out, took up the sword and in a few days had one hundred men on his mus ter roll and reported at the Columbia bridge for its defense or destruction.— This is what we would call energetic work. OW Lieut. Lyman Mishler, who was killed in '62 in New Mexico; and brought to Lancaster for re-interment, which took place an Sunday evening last, is said to have been the largest ever seen in that city. The ceremonies at the grave were exclusively Masonic and military—the latter firing the usual sa lute, and the fraternity marching around the grave and each throwing therein a sprig of evergreen, and joining in sing ing the funeral dirge. The remains of the deceased, notwith standing the long time that elapsed since his death, were in an excellent state of preservation, and when the box was opened on Saturday the features re tained much of their natural aspect.— The remains had been put up in a strong plank box, air-tight, surrounded with charcoal. lie was dresssd in his full uniform. • or To give some idea of the number that rushed to the defense of the Sus quehanna, we will give the - amount of muskets and rifles distributed : To Prot J. Jourlsvm, together with Colonel FRANK. tax's letter has been handed us for pub lication, and as the controversy has given rise to a great deal of bad feeling in our town, we feel that we cannot re. fuse either side an opportunity to be heard : MARIETTA, JUNE 24, 1863 Mr. F. L. Baker. SIR :—I deem it my duty to tho people of Marietta, and vicinity, that I should make a slain statement of facts concerning my remo val by Colonel FRANKLIN, late of the 122 d Regiment, P. V., as Captain of that portion of the "Defences of Lan caster county" between Chiques and the Dauphin county line, in order to let them know by what kind of gerryman dering the thing was done. In the first place, I never sought the office—it was altogether gratuitous on the part of Col. Frarllin ; nor did I even know that I was appointed until I saw my same is the Evening Express, and upon this information I immediate. ly repaired to Lancaster and received my "instructions"—verbal—from Col. Franklin. They were to the effect that I should picket the line with all the available force I could gather. Upon my arrival home I immediately ordered the "S. B. Thomas Rifles" (the only or ganized military company in the dis trict) to the York county side of the river, to guard the approaches. I also received • information that , a company was forming in Bainbridge, for "State Defence." I went there and assumed the commaud, food placed the men in position on the York county side of the river. This was done on the 17th inst. The next day I received the following note from Col. Franklin : LANCASTER, June 18, 1863. Capt. Wm. Johnstin :--1 have just learned that Capt. H. S. Libhart has a company of fifty men got up to act un der his orders on the Susquehanna be tween Columbia and the Dauphin coun ty line. I have therefore placed him in command of the line, relieving you.— With many thanks for your attention in the matter I remain, Very respectfully, EMLEN FRANKLIN, Commanding Defences. As I bad the honor of enjoying (?) the office one day, before I was relieved, I wish to inform the people that in that time I had over one hundred armed men in position on the line. My removal was brought about in the following manner: Geo. W. lifehaffey and Simon Snyder Nagle went to Lan caster and represented to Col. Franklin that I was lying "dormant," and that Capt. H. S. Libbart bad fifty cavalry men, composed of the best citizens, who were anxious to act as scouts along the line, (however, Libhart did not have ten men at the time, and did not get fifty for three days after I was relieved, and these were obtained fraudulently by the aid of "roughs, shoulder, hitters," &c.,) and, therefore, it. was necessary that I should be relieved and Captain Libbart appointed. At this, however, Colonel Franklin hesitated, and offered to give the appointment to Col. * * *. This was a stunner to our worthy ex-- post master and proprietor of a one horse menagerie, consisting of a living elk, etc. He knew too well that Col. * * * was too much of a gentle - man to accept an office obtained in that manner. So the ex-"too-hot-to-cut," butcher, postmaster, &c., swore that he was ono of the best citizens,—that his property, and even • his life was in danger from my inactivity—and hence the above order from Col. Franklin. Yours reipectfully, Wm. JOHNSTIN sir An inn-keeper, or the keeper of a den at McCall's Ferry, named Richard son, has been arrested for assisting de sertion. He was sent to Philadelphia for trial. air A fire occurred last week near McCall's Ferry, by which about 600 cords of wood and a large quantity of bark was destroyed. It originated from a charcoal pit. MITES AND SISTERS OF OUR VOLUNTEERS You cannot put into the Knapsacks of your husbands and brothers, a mere valuable orniore necessary gift than a supply of this Extraordinary Military Salve. The lonely sentry walking his rounds at night, exposed to drenching rains and chilled night air, is often seized with most VIOLENT PAINS, Cough and suffocating Hoarseness, first symptoms of quick consumption, but if supplied with Holloway's Pills and bolls wars Ointment, all danger is averted, a few Pills taken night and morning, and the Oint ment well rubbed twice a day over the throat and chest will remove the severest pains and stop the most distressing or dangerous cough. Therefore we say to the whole Army SOLDIERS ATTENTION See to your own health, do not trust to the Army supplies, although most valuable.— These Pills and Ointment have been thorough ly tested, they are the only remedies used in the European Camps and Barracks, for over forty years Doctor Holloway has supplied all the Armies in Europe, and during the Crimean Campaign he established a depot at Balaclava, for the exclusive sale of these Great Remedies. many a time his special Agent there has sold over a ton in weight of the Ointment in a sin gle dsy. These terrible and fatal enemies of SOLDIER IN CAMP, Dierltea, Dysentery, Scurvy, Sores and Scrofu lous Eruptions, all disappear like a charm be fore these Pills and Ointment, and now while the cry rings throughout the land, • TO ARMS !--•---TO ARMS ! ! Do not let these brave men perish by disease, place in their hands these Precious Remedies, that will enable them to resist the dangerous exposures, the Fevers, the• Chills, and the wounds which they cannot avoid, and what is more, cannot frequently get succour in the moment of need, whereas if our brave men have only to put their hands into their Knap sacks and find there a sure remedy for all the casualties of the battle field.
