men were elected to represent this *bo
rough in the County Convention : Gee.

zalere, Levi Bongbter and John Shields.
tEr We have received the first num
ber of "The Chester Valley Union," just
started at Coatsville, by Wm. J. & Jos.
C. Kauffman. "The Union" is a very
neat sheet about the size of Tile Mariet
t Ma. We hope tbe Kauffman brothers
may succeed in this enterprise. Joseph
C„ was, for a year, engaged en our pa
vr, and "has just returned from war,
having served nine months ia the 122 d
ftegiment Pennsylvania ' Volunteers,
Col. Emlen Franklin.
¢o' A man called "Fexey," we have
not heard his real name, but is almost
everywhere known by the above title, a
vagabond kind of a fellow, who was,
from the first, suspected of the murder
of Charles A. Brady, was arrested by
ex-chief burgess, Henry S. Libbart,
a few dais since in Reading. "Foxey"
was once before charged with murder,
but it appears escaped conviction. fie
put on an indifferent air when first told
by Libliart that he was charged with
Brady's murder, but has since evinced a
"weakness in the knees." The evidence
against him is purely circumstantial, but
very strong, Ile is in the county prison.
igir On Tuesday last three trains of
ears passed through this borough, filled

Some expressed a wish to remain, whilst
others were very severe on the north.

ciety was re-organized by electing the
following officers :
John Jay Libhart, President.
Col. W. H. Eagle, Vice President.
John Musser, Secretary.
Barr Spangler, Treasurer.
On taking the chair, Mr. Libhart
made some remarks upon the importance
of keeping up the organization of the
society, followed by Messrs, Henry M.
Engle and Barr Spangler on the same
subject, when it was determined to en
gage Temperance Hall for regular meet
ings and exhibitions in the future, the
next to be on Friday evening next,
(19th) at 7 o'clock, when an essay will
be delivered by the president.
Two committees were then appointed
to examine and report upon the berries
on exhibition. One composed
,of Mes
srs. Barr Spangler, Daniel Engle, John
Musser and Joseph Wind°lph, upon
seedling strawberries, produced by Hr.
Henry M. Engle, by crossing the follow
ing varieties :
No. 1. Ladies Pine and Wilson's.
No, 2. Ladies Pine and Triumph de
Gaud,
No. 3. Triumph do Gand and Wil-
son's
No. ,4. Wilson and Peabody.
The committe reported : •
No. I. Inferior to both parent berries.
No. 2, superior to No, I in flavor and wor
thy of further propagation. No. 3, good
color and size, sweeter than the Wil
son. No. 4, the largest berries, but
not of as good flavor as No. 3.
The committee commended the ef
forts of Mr. Engle in producing new va
rieties and advised special attention to
the subject on the part of the members
as a means of making still further im
provement in this valuable 'fruit. -
The committee on the general dis
play of berries, composed of Go]. W. 11.
Eagle, John Shields and Madames Barr
Spangler, Sterrit and W. 11. Eagle, re
ported that they regarded the Ladies
Pine the finest flavored berry on ex
hibition; for sine the Triumph de
Gand by Messrs. Spangler and Henry
M. Engle; also some very fine 'Wilson's
by Gottehall and Spangler, and Glo
bose Scarlet by Mr. Engle. They also
reported a fine display of the old varie
ties, Albany, Hooker and Peabody.
The table was handsomely ornament
ed by several bet:lnas from the gardens
and handiwork of Mrs. James White
hill, Mrs. S. P. Sterritt and Mrs. Barr
Spangler.
At the next exhibition there will be
cherries, raspberries, vegetables an -
flowers ; all-persons aro invited to send
anything they may have to exhibit. A
determination to make these exhibitions
interesting to exhibitors and visitors,
together with a pleasant and comforta
ble room to meet in, will, we hope, se
cure a large attendance in future.

MOTHERS, REDIEMDER 'Furs, when your sons

think what relief a single pot of this A L L
HEALING 8/. COOLING Salve will give to the
one you love whet far away from home and
friends. It hardens and makes tough the feet
so that they can endure great fatigue. It
soothes and relieves the inflamed and stiffened
joints, leaving them supple, strong and vigor

Woulgns it stands unequalled, removing and
preventing every vestige of inflamation and
gently drawing the edges together, it quickly

The lonely sentry walking his rounds m

night air, is often seized with most VIOLENT
PAINS, Cough and suffocating Hoarseness,
first symptoms of quick consumption, but if
supplied with Holloway's Pills and Hollo

Pills taken night and morning, and the Oint

and chest will remove the severest pains and
stop the most distressing or dangerous cough.
Therefore we say {o - the whole Army
SOLDIERS ATTENTION !
See to your own health, do not trnst to the
Army supplies, although most valuable.—
These Pills and Ointment have been thorough
ly tested, they are the only remedies used in
the European Camps and Barracks, • for over
forty years Doctor Holloway has supplied all
the Armies in Europe, and during the Crimean
Campaign he established a depot at Balaclava,
for the exclusive sale of these Great Remedies.
many a time his special Agent there has sold
over a ton in weight of the Oirtment in a sin
gle day. These terrible and fatal enemies of
SOLDIER IN CAMP,
Dierhea, Dysentery, Scurvy, Sores and Scrofu
lous Eruptions, all disappear like a charm be
fore these Pills and Ointment, and now while
the cry rings throughout the land,
TO ARMS !-TO ARMS !!
Do not let these brave men perish by disease.
place in their hands these Precious Remedzes,
that will enable them to resist the dangerous
exposures, the Fevers, the Chills, and the
wounds which they cannot avoid, and what is
more, cannot frequently get succour in the
moment of need, whereas ii our brave men
have only to put their hands into their Knap
sacks and find there a sure remedy for all the
casualties of the battle field. How many
thousands of lives would thus be saved who
would otherwise perish before relief could be
obtained.
IMPORTANT CAUTION !—None are genuine

Although nut disposed to favor or recom
mend. Patent Medieines in general, through
distrust of their iwzredients and effects;
know of no sufficient reasons why a man may
not testify to the benefits be believes himself
to have received from any, simple preparation,
iu hope that he may thus contribute to the
benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof
land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced
against them for many years, under the im
pression that they were chiefly an Melville
mixture. I am indebted to my friend Robert
Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this pre
judice by proper tests, and for encouragement
to try them, when suffgring, from great and
long continued debility. The use cf three
bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the
the present year, was followed by evident re
lief, and restoration to a degree of bodily mid
mental vigor which I had nut felt for six
months before, and had almost despaired of
regaining. _ I therefore thank God and my
friend for directing me to the use of them.

PARTICULAR NOTICE.—There are many
Preparations sold under the name of Bitters,
put up in quart bottles, compounded of the
cheapest whisky or common ruin, costing from
20 to 90 cents per gallon, the taste disguised by
Anise or Coriander Seed.
This class of Bitters has caused and will con
tinue to cause, as long as they can be sold,
hundreds to die the death of the drunkard.—
By their, 'use the system is kept continually
under the influence of alchuholic stimulants of
the worst kind, the desire for liquor is created
and kept up, and the Jesuit is all the horrors
attendant upon a drunkard's life and death.
For those who desire and will have a Liquor
Bitters, we publish the following receipt Get
one bottle of Hoofland's Bitters and mix with
three quarts of good brandy or whisky, and
the result will be a preparation that will far
excel in medicinal virtues and true excellence
any of the numerous Liquor Bittern in the
market, and will cost much less. You will
have all the virtues of Llootland's Bitters in
connection with a good article of liquor, at 0
much less price than these inferior prepara
tions will cost you.
ATTENTION SOLDIERS ! We call the atten
tion of all having relations or friends in the
army to the fact that "Hoot:hind's German
Bitters" will cure nine-tenths of the diseases
induced by exposures and privations incident
to camp life. In the lists, published almost
daily In the newspapers, on the arrival of the
sick:, it will be noticed that a very large pro
portion are suffering from debility. Every
case of that kind can De readily cured by
Hoolland 7 s German Bitters. Diseases result
ing from disorders of the digestive organs are
speedily removed. We have no hesitation in
stating that, if these Bitters were freely used
among our soldiers, hundreds of lives might
be saved that otherwise will be lost.
We call the particular attention to the fol
lowing remarkable and well authenticate,
cure of one of the _nation's heroes, whose life
to use his language, "has been saved by the
Bitters :"
PHILA.DELPIITA, August 23d, 1562.
Messrs. Jones liveans.— Well, gentleman,
your Hoofland's German Bitters have saved my
life. There is no mistake in this. It is vouch
ed for by numbers of my comrades, some of
whose names are appended, and wdb , are fully
cognisant of all the circumstances of my case.
I am, and have been for the last four years,
a member of Sherman's celebrated battery,
and under the immediate command of Cap
tain R. B. Ayres. Through the exposure at
ter dant upon my arduous duties, I was attack
ed in November last with inflamation of the
lungs, and was for seventy-two days in the
hospital. This was followed by great debility,
heightened by an attack of dysentery. I was
then removed from the White House, and
sent to this city on board the Steanin "State
of blainc,' s from which I landei on the 28th,
of June. Since that time 1 have been abour
as low as any one could and still retain a
spark of vitality. For a week or more I was
scarcely able to swallow anything, and if I did
force a mortal down, it was immediately
thrown up agaiu.
I could not even keep a glass of water on
my stomach. Life could not last under these.
circumstances: and, accordingly, the physi
cians who had been working faithfully, though
unsuccessfully to rescue me from the grasp
of the dread Archer, frankly told me they
could do no more for me, and advised me to
see a clergyman, and to make such disposi
tion of my limitet funds as best suited me.—
An acquaintance who visited me at
,the hospi
tal, Mr. Frederick Steineron, of Sixth below
Arch street, advised me, as a forlorn hope, to
try your Bitters, and kindly procured a bottle..
From the time I commenced taking tnem the
gloomy shadow of death receded, and I am
now, thank God for it, getting better. Tho'
I have taken but,two bottles, I have gained
ten pounds, and I feel sanguine of being per
mitted to rejoin my wife and daughter, from
whom I have heard nothing for eighteen
months : for, gentlemen, I airs a loyal Virgin-.
ian, from the vicinity of Front Royal. To
your invaluable Bitters. I owe the certainty of
life which has taken the placo of vague fears
—to your Bitters will I owe the glourious pri
vilege of again clasping to toy bosom those
who are dearest to me in life.
Very truly yours, iSAA.6 , MALONE.
We fully concur in the truth of the above
statement, us we had despaired of seeing our
comrade, Mr. Malone, restored to health.
