WELCOME TO THE "BRAVES."—Saturday
last was quite a gala day for our town.
The formal reception of the "Marietta
Braves," who bad returned from a nine
month's enlistment a few days previous
ly, took place. At one o'clock the
Town Hall bell pealed forth the an
nouncement that the people were gath
ering to do homage to the returned vol
unteers the procession was formed by
the "old soldier," who was appointed
Chief Marshal, and by him marched to
the"lower-station" hotel, where the vol
unteers joined and then paraded through
the principal streets of the town, bring
ing up in the Town Hall Park at about
3 o'clock, where Rev. Dr. Tieaow made
the formal reception, which' was one of
his happiest extemporaneous efforts;

- M. B. Church,
on behalf of the volunteers, responded.
The large room in the Town Dail had
previously been put in beautiful trim by
the ladies attached to the Patriotic Cir
cle, for the purpose of spreading - the ta
bles; at the western end of the room—
in the centre—was beautifully festooned,
an American flag, supported on either
side by wreaths of flowers and ever
greens, in the centre of which were the
words '"Welcome Home" and "Welcome
to the 'Marietta Braves.'" Two tables
the entire length of the long room lit
erally groaned under the weight of de
licious edibles provided by the "Ladies
of the Patriotic Circle." In the centre
of each table was a mammoth cake,
tastefully iced, and in the centre of each
was placed a beautiful miniature flag.—
On one of the cakes was the motto "The
Union forever,` the other "The Union
and the Constitution." The ladies find
ing they had provided more than possi
bly could be consumed by the volun
teers, invited, through their president,
John Jay Libbart, esq , the members of
the Union League, who had very liber
ally assisted in getting up the display,
to also partake of the repast. On en
tering the room and just before com
mencing the "charge upon the table,"
Rev. Mr. Clawgos deliverpd a few well
timed remarks closing with a prayer,
which for deep seated, stirring patriotism
we have rarely, if ever, listened to ; the
voracious, hungry, pent up citizen and
soldier now "went in" and soon made
sad havoc upon the nice dainties which,
but a moment before, had embellished
the tables. After full justice had been
done the dainties, the soldiers gave
three cheers for the Patriotic Circle
and one for the Union League, which
were given with a will.
Cr A delegate meeting will be held
this (Saturday) evening at the Town
llall, for the purpose of sending five
delegates to a County Convention,
which will be held in Lancaster on Wed
nesday next, to senil delegates to a
State Convention to be held in Pitts•
burg on the first day of July next, to
nominate a candidate for Governor and
Judge of the Supreme Court. The pills
mill be open between the hours of four
and six o'clock.
er The Lancaster Examiner of Wed•
nesday last says at a moeting on Tues
day last, of the stocholders of the
Farmers' Bank, it was unanimously
agreed to surrender the State charter
and accept one under the National
Banking Law. This would change the
name to the "First National Bank of
Lancaster."
lir Captain Phillips says that he
brought home with him every nan in
his company that be took away, with
the exception of one who deserted.—
This is something unused, that we doubt
whether there is another company of
nine months' men who can show so full
a muster roll on their return home. It
was a Lancaster County Company.

B. Thomas Rifles held an election for
officers, but up to going to press we did
not learn the result. \\re will have it
in our next. This company is making
rapid progress in the manual of arms,
and 'ere long will be the pride of the
borough.
gar John Buchanan, a single man
aged 31. years, who was so badly burned
a few days since by the burning of his
mother's house, at tho upper end of
town, after suffering intense agony for
several days, was relieved by death on
Tuesday morning last.
sr Henry Leese, a young man be
longing to Captain Miller's Marietta
Braves, who returned with the company
in rather good health, took suddenly ill
after his arrival home, and died on Tues
day morning last. On Thursday the
Braves attended the funeral in a body.
air Margaret Stoutzenberger, a no
torious "woman of the town" of Lancas
ter, committed suicide on Sunday after
noon, at Reigart's Landing, near Lan
caster, by throwing herself from the
Conestoga bridge,
lllir Assistant Provost Marshal Ettla
is busy taking the enrollment of this
borough. Ile made no unexpected de
scent upon a party of seven darkies, a
few days since, who were so greatly ab
sorbed in a game of poker, as not to ob
serve his entrance, but on seeing "him
and his big book," made every effort to
get away. The "Provo" drew his re
volver and warned "nara woolly head"
to move an inch, at the risk of his life,
until he had obtained all the informa
tion necessary. Mr. E. says nothing of
their eyes, but the white part, could be
seen, and that theiihair curled so tight as
to make closing their eyes out of the
question ; and that their complexion was
several shades lighter, until they learned
that they were not immediately to pro
ceed to Dixie.

"hung-op our hat" at the "American,"
opposite the old state house. This is
justly one of the most popular first class
hotels in the "city of brotherly love,"—
Whilst other houses, not as good, are
charging two dollars a day, the "Ameri

Those feelings which so sadden us, usually
arise from trouble or annoyances, obstructed
prespiraticn, or eating and drinking whatever
is unwholesome, thus disturbing the healthful
action of the liver and stomach. These organs
must be relieved, if you desire to do well.—

instructions, will quickly produce a healthy ac
tion in both liver and stomach, and as a natu
ral consequence a clear head and good appetite.

bowels be either confined or unduly acted
upon. It may seem strange that Holloway's
Pills should be recommended for Dysentery
and Flux, many persons supposing that they
would increase the relaxation. This is a
great mistake, for these Pills will correct the
liver and stomach and thus remove all the
acrid humours from the system. This medi
cine will give tone and vigor to the whole
organic system however deranged, while
health and strength follow as a matter of
course. Nothing will stop the relaxation of
the Bowels so sure as this famous medicine.
VOLUNTEERS ATTENTION
Sores and Ulcers, Blotches and Swellings
can with certainty be radically cured if the
Pills are taken night and morning, and the
Ointment be freely used as stated in the printed
nstructions. If treated in any other manner
they dry up in one part to break out in another.

might have his wounds dressed immediately,

into the wound and smeared all around it, then
cover with a piece of linen from his Knapsack
and compressed with a handkerchief. Taking
night and morning 6 or S Pills, to cool the
system and prevent intimation.

Although nut disposed to favor or recom
mend, Patent Medicines in general, through
distrust of their ingredients and effects; I
know of no sufficient reasons why a man may
not testify to the benefits he believes himself
to have received from any simple preparation,
in hope that he may thus contribute to the
benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof
land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced
against them for .many years, under the im
pression that they were chiefly an alcholic
mixture. I am indebted to my friend Robert
Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this pre
judice by proper tests, and for encouragement
to try them, when suffering from great and
long continued debility. The use of three
bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the

lief, and restoration to a degree of bodily and
mental vigor which I had not felt for six
