SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 1861
WELCOME TO THE "BRAVES."—Saturday
last was quite a gala day for our town.
The formal reception of the "Marietta
Braves," who bad returned from a nine
month's enlistment a few days previous
ly, took place. At one o'clock the
Town Hall bell pealed forth the an
nouncement that the people were gath
ering to do homage to the returned vol
unteers the procession was formed by
the "old soldier," who was appointed
Chief Marshal, and by him marched to
the"lower-station" hotel, where the vol
unteers joined and then paraded through
the principal streets of the town, bring
ing up in the Town Hall Park at about
3 o'clock, where Rev. Dr. Tieaow made
the formal reception, which' was one of
his happiest extemporaneous efforts;
Rev. Mr. Gregg, of the;
- M. B. Church,
on behalf of the volunteers, responded.
The large room in the Town Dail had
previously been put in beautiful trim by
the ladies attached to the Patriotic Cir
cle, for the purpose of spreading - the ta
bles; at the western end of the room—
in the centre—was beautifully festooned,
an American flag, supported on either
side by wreaths of flowers and ever
greens, in the centre of which were the
words '"Welcome Home" and "Welcome
to the 'Marietta Braves.'" Two tables
the entire length of the long room lit
erally groaned under the weight of de
licious edibles provided by the "Ladies
of the Patriotic Circle." In the centre
of each table was a mammoth cake,
tastefully iced, and in the centre of each
was placed a beautiful miniature flag.—
On one of the cakes was the motto "The
Union forever,` the other "The Union
and the Constitution." The ladies find
ing they had provided more than possi
bly could be consumed by the volun
teers, invited, through their president,
John Jay Libbart, esq , the members of
the Union League, who had very liber
ally assisted in getting up the display,
to also partake of the repast. On en
tering the room and just before com
mencing the "charge upon the table,"
Rev. Mr. Clawgos deliverpd a few well
timed remarks closing with a prayer,
which for deep seated, stirring patriotism
we have rarely, if ever, listened to ; the
voracious, hungry, pent up citizen and
soldier now "went in" and soon made
sad havoc upon the nice dainties which,
but a moment before, had embellished
the tables. After full justice had been
done the dainties, the soldiers gave
three cheers for the Patriotic Circle
and one for the Union League, which
were given with a will.
Cr A delegate meeting will be held
this (Saturday) evening at the Town
llall, for the purpose of sending five
delegates to a County Convention,
which will be held in Lancaster on Wed
nesday next, to senil delegates to a
State Convention to be held in Pitts•
burg on the first day of July next, to
nominate a candidate for Governor and
Judge of the Supreme Court. The pills
mill be open between the hours of four
and six o'clock.
er The Lancaster Examiner of Wed•
nesday last says at a moeting on Tues
day last, of the stocholders of the
Farmers' Bank, it was unanimously
agreed to surrender the State charter
and accept one under the National
Banking Law. This would change the
name to the "First National Bank of
Lancaster."
lir Captain Phillips says that he
brought home with him every nan in
his company that be took away, with
the exception of one who deserted.—
This is something unused, that we doubt
whether there is another company of
nine months' men who can show so full
a muster roll on their return home. It
was a Lancaster County Company.
air On l‘londay evening last the S.
B. Thomas Rifles held an election for
officers, but up to going to press we did
not learn the result. \\re will have it
in our next. This company is making
rapid progress in the manual of arms,
and 'ere long will be the pride of the
borough.
gar John Buchanan, a single man
aged 31. years, who was so badly burned
a few days since by the burning of his
mother's house, at tho upper end of
town, after suffering intense agony for
several days, was relieved by death on
Tuesday morning last.
sr Henry Leese, a young man be
longing to Captain Miller's Marietta
Braves, who returned with the company
in rather good health, took suddenly ill
after his arrival home, and died on Tues
day morning last. On Thursday the
Braves attended the funeral in a body.
air Margaret Stoutzenberger, a no
torious "woman of the town" of Lancas
ter, committed suicide on Sunday after
noon, at Reigart's Landing, near Lan
caster, by throwing herself from the
Conestoga bridge,
lllir Assistant Provost Marshal Ettla
is busy taking the enrollment of this
borough. Ile made no unexpected de
scent upon a party of seven darkies, a
few days since, who were so greatly ab
sorbed in a game of poker, as not to ob
serve his entrance, but on seeing "him
and his big book," made every effort to
get away. The "Provo" drew his re
volver and warned "nara woolly head"
to move an inch, at the risk of his life,
until he had obtained all the informa
tion necessary. Mr. E. says nothing of
their eyes, but the white part, could be
seen, and that theiihair curled so tight as
to make closing their eyes out of the
question ; and that their complexion was
several shades lighter, until they learned
that they were not immediately to pro
ceed to Dixie.
tar We paid a Hying visit to the
Quaker city last week, and while there
"hung-op our hat" at the "American,"
opposite the old state house. This is
justly one of the most popular first class
hotels in the "city of brotherly love,"—
Whilst other houses, not as good, are
charging two dollars a day, the "Ameri
can" charges but 1:75. See their card
in another column.

ITOLLOWAY'S PILLS AND OINT
MENT.—AII who have Friends and

special care, that they be amply supplied with
these Pills and Ointment; and where the
brave Soldiers and Sailors have neglected to
provide themselves with them, no better pres
ent can be sent them by their friends. They
have been proved to be the Soldier's never
failing-Mend in the hour of need.
Colinas AND COLDS AFFECTING TROOPS.
Will be speedily relieved and effectually
cured by using these admirable medicines, and
by paying proper attention to the Directions
which are attached to each Pot or Box.
Sick Headactte and want of Appetite Incidenta
to Soldiers
Those feelings which so sadden us, usually
arise from trouble or annoyances, obstructed
prespiraticn, or eating and drinking whatever
is unwholesome, thus disturbing the healthful
action of the liver and stomach. These organs
must be relieved, if you desire to do well.—
The Pills, taking according to the printed
instructions, will quickly produce a healthy ac
tion in both liver and stomach, and as a natu
ral consequence a clear head and good appetite.
.Weakness and debility induced by over Fatigue,
Will soon disappear by the use of these in.
valuable Pills, and the Soldier will quickly
acquire additional strength. Never let the
bowels be either confined or unduly acted
upon. It may seem strange that Holloway's
Pills should be recommended for Dysentery
and Flux, many persons supposing that they
would increase the relaxation. This is a
great mistake, for these Pills will correct the
liver and stomach and thus remove all the
acrid humours from the system. This medi
cine will give tone and vigor to the whole
organic system however deranged, while
health and strength follow as a matter of
course. Nothing will stop the relaxation of
the Bowels so sure as this famous medicine.
VOLUNTEERS ATTENTION
Sores and Ulcers, Blotches and Swellings
can with certainty be radically cured if the
Pills are taken night and morning, and the
Ointment be freely used as stated in the printed
nstructions. If treated in any other manner
they dry up in one part to break out in another.
Whereas this Ointment will remove the
former from the system and leave the Patients
in vigorous and healthy man. It will require
as little perseverance in bad cases to insure a
lastng cure.
For Wounds either occasioned by the Bayonet
Sabre or Me Bullet, Sores or Bruises,
To which every Soldier and Sailor are liable
there are no medicines so safe, sure and con
venient as Holloway's Pills and Ointment
The poor wounded and almost dying sufferer
might have his wounds dressed immediately,
if he would only provide himself with this
matchless Ointment, which should be thruss
into the wound and smeared all around it, then
cover with a piece of linen from his Knapsack
and compressed with a handkerchief. Taking
night and morning 6 or S Pills, to cool the
system and prevent intimation.
Every Soldier's Knapsack and Seaman's
Chest should be provided- with these valuable
Remedies.
IMPORTANT CAUTION!—None are genuine
unless the words " HOLLOWAY, NEW YORK
and LONDON," are discernible as a Wale? -
mark in every leaf of the book of directions,
around each pot or box; the same may be
plainly seen by holding the leaf to the light.—
A handsome reward will be given to any one
rendering such information as may lead to the
detection of any party or parties counterfeiting
the medicines or vending the same, knowing
them to be spurious.

From Rev..): Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of
the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge.
Although nut disposed to favor or recom
mend, Patent Medicines in general, through
distrust of their ingredients and effects; I
know of no sufficient reasons why a man may
not testify to the benefits he believes himself
to have received from any simple preparation,
in hope that he may thus contribute to the
benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof
land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced
against them for .many years, under the im
pression that they were chiefly an alcholic
mixture. I am indebted to my friend Robert
Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this pre
judice by proper tests, and for encouragement
to try them, when suffering from great and
long continued debility. The use of three
bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the
the present year, was followed by evidnt re
lief, and restoration to a degree of bodily and
mental vigor which I had not felt for six
months before, and had almost despaired 01
regaining. I therefore thank God and my
friend for directing me to the use of them.

PARTICULAR NOTICE.—There are many
Preparations sold under the name of Bitters,
put up in quart bottles, compounded of the
cheapest whisky or common ruin, costing from
20 to 90 cents per gallon, the taste disguised
Anise or Coriander Seed.
This class of Bitters has caused and will con
tinue to cause, as long as they can be sold.
hundreds to die the death of the drunkard.—
By their use the system is kept continually
under the influence of alchoholic stimulants of
the worst kind, the desire for liquor is create:,
and kept up, and the result is all the horrors
attendant upon a drunkard's life and death.
For those who desire and will have a Liquor
Bitters, we publish the following receipt Ge:
one bottle of Hoolland , s Bitters and mix with
three quarts of good brandy or whiiky, anc
the result will be a preparation that will far
excel im medicinal virtues and true excellenc:
any of the numerous Liquor Bitters in the
market, and will cost much less. You will
have all the virtues of Hoofland's Bitters
connection with a good article of liquor, at t.
much less price titan these inferior prepara
tions will cost you.
ATTENTION SOLDIERS! We call the atten
tion of all having relations or friends in the
army to the fact that "floofland's German
Bitters" will cure nine-tenths of the diseases
induced by exposures and privations incident
to camp life, In the lists, published almost
daily in the newspapers, on the arrival of the
sick, it will be noticed that a very large pro
portion are suffering from debility. Every
case of that kind can be readily cured by
lloofland's German Bitters. Diseases result
ing from disorders of the digestive organs are
speedily removed. We have no hesitation in
stating that, if these Bitters were freely used
among our soldiers, hundreds of lives might
be saved that otherwise will be lost.
We call the particular attention to the fol
lowing remarkable and well authenticate,
cure of one of the nation's heroes, whose life
to use his language, "has been saved by the
Bitters I"
PHILADELPHIA, August 2341, 1562.
kiel.fts. Jones 4 , Eveans.—Well, gentleman,
your Booßand's German Bitters have saved my
life. There is no mistake in this. It is vouch
ed for by numbers of my comrades, some of
whose names are appended, and - who are fully
cognizant of all the circumstances ofmy case.
I am, and have been for the last four years,
a member of Sherman's celebrated battery,
and under the immediate command of Cap
tain R. B. Ayres. Through the exposure at
tendant upon my arduous duties, I was attack
ed in November last with infatuation of the
lungs, and was for seventy-two days in the
hospital. This was followed by great debility,
heightened by an attack of dysentery. I was
then removed from the White House, an:;
sent to this city on board the Steamer "Stab ,
of Maine," from which I 'andel on the 28th,
of June. Since that time I have been aboir
as low as any one could and still retain a.
spark of vitality: For a week or more I waN
scarcely able to swallow anything, and if I did
force a morsel down, it was immediatel.
thrown up again:
I could not even keep a glass of water on
my stomach. Life could nut last under these
circumstances: and, accordingly, the physi
ciaas who had been working faithfully, though
unsuccessfully to rescue me from the grasp
of the dread Archer, frankly told me the:
could do no more for me, and advised me to
see a clergyman, and to make such disposi•
tion of my limitel funds as best suited me.--
An acquaintance who visited me at the hospi
tal, Mr. Frederick Steinbron, of Sixth below
Arch street, advised me, as a forlorn hope, t,.
Ary your Bitters, and kindly procured a bottle,
From the time I commenced taking them the
gloomy shadow of death receded, and I ans
now, thank God for it, getting better. Thu'
I have taken but two battles, I have gained
ten pounds, and I feel sanguine of being per
mitted to rejoin my wife and dau g hter, from
whom I have heard nothing fee eighteen,
months: for, gentlemen, I am a loyal Virgin
ian, from the vicinity of Front Royal. Tu
your invaluable Bitters I owe the certainty of
life which has taken the placo of ttaguefears
—to your Bitters will 1 owe the giourious pri
vi:.ege. of again clasping to. my bosom those
vilio are dearest to me in life.
Very truly yours, Isaac Ms LOY.E.
w e f u lly concur in the truth of the above.
statement, as we had despaired of seeing our
comrade, Mr. Malone, restored to health.
