Ur At a late meeting of the directors
of the "First ,National Bank of Mari
etta," !John Hollinger, Esq., was elected
president and James Mehaffey, Esq.,
vice president. ,No better selections
could have been made. Thus we go—
and the.))ank will be put in operation
immediately,—if not sooner, but jesting
aside,„ell things bid fair for a speedy and
successful opening of a long wished for,
and mach needed bank in our borough.
There can be no doubt, from a look at
the gentleman in charge of this associa
tion, of its being a complete success.
eir In accordance with the request of
the "Bow of Promise Section Cadets of
Temperance of Marietta," the Rev. Dr.
Timlow will preach a sermon " T 9 the
Young," in the Presbyterian church, on
Sunday (to-morrow) evening. The pub
lie are invited to attend.
Ur Just as' we were about going to
press, WO received a very interesting let
ter from Quartermaster John McClure,
of the Pennsylvania Forty Fifth, now
stationed in Kentucky. We will pub
lish it in our next. lie reports all the
boys in fine trim.
Cr Poring the past week the timber
business has, been exceedingly brisk—
prices kept up amazingly, and at this
writing,—Friday afternoon--the river is
again rising and every prospect of an
other freshet.
gr . To-morrow Sunday morning, 'Rev.
Mr. Gregg will deliver a sermon to the
scholars attached to the M. E. Sabbath
school. Rev. Mr. Clawgee, the super
i will also address them.
eir Our Union League is making
propartions to receive the "Marietta
Bravos" at the expiration of their term
of enlistment, which will take place in a
few days.
Cfss - Through the kindness of Mrs. Dr,
wo were enabled, during last
week, to enjoy some very fine salad and
rhuhard. hIo l for the season of deli
cious vegetables.
Cr David Evans was re-elected Coun
ty Superintendent of Common schools
for the next three years, at the old sal
ary of twelve hundred and fifty dollars.
Ur The Ladies Patriotic Circle will
meet on Friday evening next, at the
residence of Mrs S. Patterson Sterrett.
fir A call has been made on the
stock subscribed to the "First National
Bank of Marietta" See advertisement.
SUSQUEHANNA LUMBER TRADE.-A cor
respondent, writing from the banks of
the Susquehanna, near Nlarietta, says :
It is surprising to witness the vast
amount of timber lining the bank from
the eastern end of the town to the ro
mantic locality known as the "Willows,"
& distance of about three miles westward.
The rafts lay about an average of six
abreast the entire distance ; and, accor
ding to an estimate bade by several
large dealers in timber, it was calculated
that there were from thirteen to fifteen
million feet, which at present rates, was
worth over five hundred thousand dol
lors. Taking the entire amount of tim
ber into consideration which has passed
Marietta this season and gone on to
Columbia, Port Deposit and other
points, the value of the material thus far
already shipped would run up to at least
one million dollars.—Philadelphia Led

par A rather shrewd yankee, after
loaang around town for a few days, call
ed into McMichael's restaurant, where
ho had spent considerab!e of his loose
change, to borrow two dollars. Mc
said "he had'nt the change to spare,"
whereupon "red shirt" said, "I'm going
to a party to-night, and I expect before
it is over I shall be drunk, and I don't
want to spend all the money I've got :
so hero is a ten dollar note—give me
four dollars on it and to-morrow morning
I will call for the six." Abb without
any further thought, threw the ten dol
lar bill in the drawer and throw him
down four ; in the morning the ten was
discovered to be a counterfeit. Yankee
has not yet called for his six dollars
balance. _ . .
. (Fr John A. Gray, or better known as
Gray Cochran, who was a deserter from
Colonel Welsh's regiment, was arrested
a few evenings since at McMichael's
restaurant, by a posses from the provost
guard stationed at Columbia. He was
sent to Camp Curtin. This is the sec
ond time Gray has deserted. The Lan
caster Inquirer says after deserting the
first time, he. entered the rebel service,
which is a mistake, having been in
Clearfield county for some time past
working at timber making cnd made
his re-appearance here with the first
freshet.
