eir The lack of locals and our usual
-variety of news matter is to be accoun
ted for by our absence on the river—
being a timber measurer--but next
week we hope to stir-up and make
amends for our present short comings.
At a meeting of the stockholders
of the "First National Bank of Mariet
ta," on Saturday afternoon last, the
following gentlemen were elected direc
tors for the first fiscal year : John
Haldeman, John Musser, John Hollin
ger, S. F. Eagle, A. H. Musselman,
Barr Spangler, James Mehaffy, B. F.
Iliestand, Jacob E. Kreybill. At the
same time, the old banking building,
almost immediately opposite the cross
keys tavern, was selected as the location
for the Bank. Every effort will be
made to put the association in opera
ation immediately.
453" The Timber business, has, during
the present week, been exceedingly
brisk, leading off at prices from 15 to 18
cents for pine and from 22 to 26 cents
for oak. The shore is still lined with
rafts with a downward tendency in prices.
Very few board rafts have passed here,
Gir We received the following letter
from our former townsman, W. T.

New Mexico, which we cheerfully pub

ALBURQUERQUE, N. M., March 30, '63.
Jllr. Editor:—Thinking that it may
not be amiss to communicate a few
lines through the columns of your ex
cellent, journal to the friends and rela
tives of the late Lieutenant Mishler,
I as one of his friends, and being a na
tive of the same State andsounty, em
brace this opportunity of expressing to
- the friends of the deceased a .few lines
in honorable mention of the brave and
noble young patriot who unhesitatingly
rushed on to alm - ast, certain death while
fighting his country's battle on the field
of Valverde, and whose remains are
about to bo received by his friends to be
interred by them. Lieutenant Mishler
had been stationed in this Territory
about one year previous to his death,
and during that time was respected and
loved by every one who became ac
quainted with him for his 'gentlemanly
deportment and his high-toned charac
ter, which was evinced in all his busi
ness and aesociations ; among his broth
er officers he stood high in esteem for
his excellent qualities as a true soldier
and comrade. At the battle of Valver
de he was detached from his command
Co.is I, U. S. L, and attached to Cap
tain McKeas battery, which was sta
tional] ou the right wing of the army
and uizainst which the concentrated at
„tack of the rebels in force was made at
three different times.• For sonic unac
countable reason Gen. Canby, the com
mander of the Federal troops, ordered
tho infantry supports from Capt. Mc-
Kees buttery to another part of the
field, leaving it entirely unsupported ; at
that time Lieut. ,Mishler met a friend
and took his hand bidding hint adieu,
and saying that, this will be the last
time that we will ever speak together.
Upon being asked why, he remarked that
he believed that he was going to be
killed, about this time the Texans made
their third charge upon the battery; the
men of the battery bad nearly ill been
killed in the two previous charges ; and
Lieut. Mishler loaded and fired ono of
the pieces by himself several times, his
piece being one of the last that was dis
chirrged before the battery fell into the
hands of the enemy, and after the bat
tle. ho was found lying near the body of.
Major Lockenridge, who led the betel
lion of the enemy and took the battery.
It is claimed by many here • that he
killed the notorious Texan "Lockridge”
with his pistol as he was in the act of
laying his band upon one of the guns
and claiming that he took the battery.
To give some idea of the desperate re
sistance with which those brave soL
diers fought, I will state that the enemy
were literally lying in heaps in front of
the battery; and the artillery-men.
fought until there was but one officer
and four men left unhurt. The fore
going sketch of the battle of Valverde,
so far are potent to almost every one in
this Territory, and to do justice and
accord the Proper mete, an abler pen
th an mine should write this communica
tion, but believing that this may not be
an unfit intrusion, and that although
coMmonplace and unpretending, it may
be gratifying to the friends and relatives
of the noble and true soldier who fell
is his country's cause while fighting al-
Most alone against overpowering num

doubtless regretting that he had not
more lives to offer up upon the alter of
his country; and the memories that will
cluster around him for his bravery will
never be forgotten. W. T. S,

You cannot put into the Knapsacks of
your husbands and brothers, a more

than a supply of this
Extraordinary Military Salve
The lonely sentry walking his rounds a')
night, exposed to drenching rains and chilled
night air, is often seized with most VIOLENT
PAINS, Cough and suffocating Hoarseness,
first symptoms of quick consumption, but i
supplied with Holloway's Pills and Holla—
way's Ointment, all danger is averted, a few
Pills taken night and morning, and the Oint
ment well rubbed twice a day over the throe: ,
and chest will remove the severest pains rtn,l
stop the most distressing or dangerous cough.
Therefore we say to the whole Army
SOLDIERS ATTENTION
See to your own health, do not trost to the
Army supplies, although most valuable.—
These Pills and Ointment have been thorough
ly tested, they are the only remedies used in
the European Camps and Barracks, for over
forty years Doctor Holloway has supplied all
the Armies in Europe, and during the Crimean
Campaign he established a depot at Balaclava,
for the exclusive sale of these Great Remedies.
many a time his special Agent there has sold
over a ton in weight of the Owtment in a sin
gle day. These terrible and fatal enemies of
SOLDIER IN CAMP,
Dieritea, Dysentery, Scurry, Sores and Scrofu
lous Eruptions, all disappear like a charm be
fore these Pills and Ointment, and now while
the cry rings throughout - the land,
TO ARMS !-TO ARiVIS
Do not let these brave men perish by disease,
place in their hands these Precious Remedies,
that will enable them to resist the dangerous
exposures, the Fevers, the Chills, and the
wounds which they cannot avoid, and what is
more, cannot frequently get succour in the
moment of need, whereas if our brave men
have only to put their hands into their Knap
sacks and find there a sure remedy for all the
casualties of the battle field. How many
thousands of lives would thus be saved who
would otherwise perish before relief could be
obtained.
IMPORTANT CAUTION !—None are genuine
