or Marietta is, at length, to have a
Bank ; our long-waiting, much-annoyed
bank-seeking borough is now about to
have what every intelligent person has
long *dace conceded she so long has
needed—a bank. We understand from
a highly reliable source, that over forty
eight thousand dollars have already
been subscribed, and that, too, by the
solid men of the borough and vicinity,
for the purpose of lifting a fifty thousand
dollar bank charter under the national
bank law. Two or three energetic and
reliable gentlemen took the matter in
band a short time since, and strange to
say, in a few days obtained subscriptions
sufficient to insure the lifting of the
charter. Here, after all the dilly-dal
lying, log-rolling and bank committee
paying of three or four sessions of the
legislature, is to be established, a bank,
upon the high-toned character of being
free from any corrupt or illegal proceed
ings to obtain a charter, of which we
justly feel proud.

DEMAND FOR TSB FIVE-TWENTY BONDS.
; The fortes in the loan divisions of the
bureaus of the Treasurerand Register
of the Treasury are laboring night and
day, and even Sundays, to prepare the
five-twenty bonds, to keep pace with
the demands of the public. The sub
scriptions are still several days ahead
of the issnos. The printers are also be
hind with the banks. As the bonds
draw interest from the date of subscrip
iron, however, purchasers lose nothing
by a few days' delay in their reception.
er The Legislature of this State has
a bill before it taxiug those who claimed
exemption from the late draft because
religions scruples, $3OO each. The
constitution of the State requires that
persons exempted from draft on the
ground of conscientious scruples shall
pay to the state a pecuniary equivalent
for military services. Should this bill
become a law the revenue derived from
this source in this county alone will
amount to quite a large sum, as the ex.
eniptions on the ground of religious
scruple numbered many hundreds.
lir On the first of April the entire
indebtedness of the Government, inclu
ding requisitions, United States notes
certificates, and bonded debts, was nine
hundred and twenty-nine millions, at
an average interest of three and one
third per cent. There are three hen
tired and forty-five millions of treasury
notes out, bearing no interest.
Camp near Murfreesboro',
March 25, 1863.
FRIEND BAKER :—The 79th has chang
ed its encampment from what was once
the site of a filthy secesh camp to a lo
cality more healthy_ and congenial to
the national soldier. All the camps
which were on the western side of the
city have been removed to the northern.
Troops remaining too long in the same
place become unhealthy. Last Thurs
day Genera! Rosecrans reviewed the
Ist Division of the 14th Army Corps,
to which is attached the 79th Peensyl-
vania. The line was formed about two
miles from camp on a fine plain, (we
have no fields in this vicinity, the fences
having all disappeared,) the Ist
_Brigade
on the right, the 2d in the 'centre, the
3d on the left, and the 4th, which is
composed entirely of regulars, to the
rear of the Ist. Gen. Rosecrans and
stair, accompanied by General Thomas,
commanding the corps, and General
Granger commanding the:division, rode
down the line in front criticising the
appearance of the troops. When he
came to the 79th he remarked, "You
look well, boye—l have much to expect
of you." Passing to the rear be again
viewed the regiment, and said, "Major,
(Major Locher being in command of
thd regiment,) allow me to express my
gratification at the soldierly appearance
of your men ; they look as though they
were ready for work, like. business."—
The General after a careful inspection
of every regiment and battery, had them
pass in review and march totheir camps.
Not being satisfied with seeing the
troops on the field the General and
staff rode through the camps of the dif
ferent regiments of the division and in
spected:them. Again be compliment
ed'tlie:79thfor the tidiness displayed in
their camp. This regiment has won the
favor and esteem of every General who
has bad the honor to have it in his com
mand. They do it by implicit obedi
ence to orders. Every:soldier in the
regiment takes a pride in doing his du
ty. General Rosecrans has revived au
011 usage of war ; every General has his
stauda6l and standard bearer ; the Gen
eral's own being the National flag with
a golden eagle emblazoned on it., 'l'lie
day was beautiful and the review passed
off splendidly. EarliPriday afternoon,
the day following the review, an order
was hastily:given for the 3di . brigade to
fall in line with two days' rations ; a few
minutes later they were seen moving out
the Liberty turnpike with four pieces of
artillery,:preceded by 1200 cavalry com
posed of parts of the 4th and 10th Ohio,
7th Perinaylvanie, :M :Michigan, and Ist
Tennessee.
A few days ago the rebels burnt the
bridge across Stone river six miles from
Murfreesboro'. Here we were delayed
an hour and a half in fording the stream,
after which we hurriedly marched, and
at 8 r. At. were twelve miles from our
encampment. We:here bivouaced for
the night after:sending eight companies
out as pickets., Morning:came and with
it an:explanatlon to our expedition. A.
Brigade under the command of Colonel
Hell of the 105th Ohio, had been at
tucked:near:Milton,ll3 miles
- from Mur
freesboro', while out on a scout, by a
much superior force of rebel cavalry.—
A courier was sent to Murfreesboro' for
reinforcements with the gratifying intel
ligence that they could hold their ground
until reinforcements should arrive. The
rebel cavalry completely surrounded
them and made two fearful but unsuc
cessful charges. A section of Captain
Harris' battery kept up a most effectual
fire ; the rebels seeing the execution of
the battery charged, but were repulsed
with great loss by the 80th Indiana, who
were concealed and waited until the re
bels were within thirty yards of them.—
The sudden-and destructive fire opened
on them caused them to recoil and re
treat in confusion, leavitig their dead
and wounded. The victory was corn-•
plate before reinforcements arrived.—
A.mong the rebels killed are one Colo•
net, one Captain and three Lieutenants.
Our loss was very trifling. The battle
continued about four hours. We re
turned to camp about eight o'clock,
Saturday evening. The rainy season
has passed and Spring is with us in all
her beauty ; the peach and plumb trees
are iu bloom, and the forests and fields
are clothing themselveg in green.
Fahnestock has made a change
in his office hours ; see his corrected
card, in another column.
