LIEUT. Cot,. SUIPLEY have jest
learned from a reliable source that Cap
tain Shipley of the Regular Army, has
been appointed by Maj, Gen. N. P•
Banks, Lieutenant Colonel and Quar
termaster of the Department of the
Gulf. This places Col. Shipley in en
tire control of all water and land trans
portation pertaining to General Banks'
division. The importance of this posi
tion can only be appreciated by those
knowing the responsibilities attending
it. The rapid strides made by this gen
tlemanly officer, from the ranktl as a
private, show conclusively the merits of
the man. Would that all our Army
promotions were based upon like causes.
Whilst in this connection we may
be permitted to say that we have learn
ed, with much regret, what appears to
like a premium to disloyalty, that Col.
Shipley is about, or has already, appoin
ted Samuel Lt, Brown, formerly a Ma.
riettian, to a clerkship under him. This
we regret, for this Brown is, beyond
peradventure, a secessionist. We have
in our possession two letters which will
show this conclusively. If loyal men
cannot bo found in New Orleans to fill
those places, send north rather than
confide government secrets to the doubt
ful breasts of Northern doughfaces
south.

rious rumors with regard to this gentle
man's cenduct toward Henry W. Free,
and now, in order to give the Claptain's
defence we publish the following card.

considered "a very clever fellow" and
we were slow to give credence to these
reports.

Hr. Editor :—On looking over the
last "Mariettian" I find the friends of
Heury W. Free do me injustice by cen
suring me for his illness. I wish to
defend myself by saying that the said
Henry W. Free contracted his disease
by tuliag a very bat] cold at, Harrisburg
by imprudence. He was off and on duty
until the 20th day of September after
which he did no duty, and whilst sick I
spoke to him in regard to getting his
discharge and he refused taking it, but
finding him getting worse I persuaded
him to take it on the 22d day of Novem
ber, which his papers will show, further
it was not in My power to give him a dis
charge until I got orders from higher
authority; as for his treatment while
sick, I could not have done more for
him than I did, I hear many reports
and am blamed for charging him for get
ting his discharge. He received eight
months clothing and had served but
three, consequently the overplus of
clothing was taken from his pay by the
General paymaster.

Place, Mr. Barton McGuigan, fireman
on a freight train, met with an accident
which resulted in his instant death.
While in the act of getting a shovel
of coal, the lank became detached
from the engine, and . falling across
the track, the whole train passed
over his body, severing it in two, His
remains were conveyed to bis residence
at Paoli.

Lancaster, Pa., was shot through the
heart, in a quarrel on Green street, Lou
isville, a few nights since. John Huff,
his assassin, was arrested and commit
ted for a hearing.

We can answer the above question
with an emphatic "no !" Our "Jetty,"
although a barkeeper, is far too decent a
man to offer himself body and breeches
for a stated sum, and then whine a
string of dolorous lies to the public, be
cause he was not taken at his own price.
Carlisle, we are sorry to admit, has pro
duced some very bad characters, but
we believe, has never been disgraced
with as mean a swindler as this fellow.
Will the above papers please correct
their inuendoes, as our Mr. Boyer has a
character to loose ?—Carlisle Herald.
The above seems to be satisfactorily
explained by our cotemporary. Let us
now ask a few other questions, perhaps
some one may be able to answer. Is
the T. Jefferson Boyer the same indi
vidual that sold his vote and received
the HARD casu from certain Passenger
Railway companies when he was in the
Legislature a few years since?
Is it the same Boyer that acted very
conspicuously in the Fry divorce case ?

This J. K., must be a "lost one out of

PENNSYLVANIA RAILRQAD.—The revi
sed organization for conducting the
Pennsylvania Railroad went into oper
ation on Monday last. The road will
hereafter be divided into three divisions,
to be known as the Philadelphia, the
Middle and Pittsburg divisions; the Ist
to be under the superintendency of Geo.
C. Franciscus, the 2d under Semi D.
Young, and the 3d under that of Andrew
Carnegie. The Engineer and Mainten
ance of Way Departments will be under
the charge of W. H. Wilson, with the
title of Chief Engineer will be aided by
the following resident Engineers: J. C.
Sharpless, M. Wilson and J. S. Love.
J. H. Linville is Engineer of Bridges,
SLc. John P. Laird has charge of the
motive department.
oar Judge Ludlow received a fitting
rebuke from the Grand Jury of Phila
delphia. It will be remembered that
this butternut Judge attempted to use
the Grand Jury in aiding him in his own
treasonable sympathies, by ordering that
the said Grand Jury should take some
immediate action in reference. to the ar
rest of the notorious copperhead, Boil
ein, of the Evening Journal, The
Grand Jury did ect, bat not as the but
ternut Judge anticipated. The Jury
stated the facts of the case, quoted the
treasonable articles from the Journal,
expressed their high regard for the Na
tional and State Governments, and then
left the inference, broad and plain, that
the entire jury approved of the arrest of
the traitor Boileau. So much for but
ternut Ludlow's attempt to arrest the
course of justice in the ease of one of
his affinities in treason.

(German) residing at 23 Christie street,
New York, committed suicide a few
days since, by taking a doso of phosphor
us. The old story Husband went to
war 19 months ago. She was indis
creet., and to hide disgrace, rushed into
eternity.
• The Victoria Advocate says that
a pair of large camels are being put on
the express from the Rio Grande to
Victoria. They are to be harnessed to
a two-wheeled, cart. They will carry
3,000 ponnds of freight, and make the
trip in five to seven days.
A. letter from Newbern, N. C., says
that Governor Stanley's resignation was
sent to Washington by the last mail.—
It was based upon the President's eman
cipation proclamation, to which he is
strenuously opposed.

30th Ohio, recently dismissed from the
service for being absent without leave,.

Harper's Perry memory, He was an
other Brown altogether.
1' Colonel Stewart, chief of General
McOlernard's staff, was killed opposite
Vicksburg on the 24th ult. He was de
stroying the rebel ferry-boats, and was
shot by tke enemy.

Improved Black Hawk Cast Iron Ore Washer,
assigned and transferred, for a valuable con
sideration, under his hand and seal, the undi
vided one half of all his right, title and inter
est in the said invention to - the undersigned ;
and subsequently the said O'lfryan - an the
undersigned entered into co-partnership for
the purpose of manufacturing and selling said
Ore Washers.
This is to give notice that, the recent acts
and conduct of the said O'Bryan beim.- incon
sistent with the longer continuance olthe said
partnership, the same is hereby dissolved ; and
that the undersigned will not, from this date,
be liable for any debts which the said O'Bryan
may contract in the manufacture of said Ore
Washers or otherwise.
Also, that the Said O'Bryan has no authori
ty from me, the half owner, to sell any of said
Ore Washers for less .than $200.00, and all
