SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1862
C APT. ALEX. N. SHIPLEY.—Tho friends
of Capt. Shipley in this city, will be
pleased to learn that he has been ap
pointed to the important and responsi
ble position of Assistant Quartermaster
in the city of New Orleans. In the New
Orleans Delta of Nov. 27th, we find his
appointthent announced as follows :
OFFICE CUIEF QUARTERMASTER, DE
PARTMENT OF THE GULF,
New Orleans, Nov. 26th, 1862.
Captain A.- N. Shipley, Assistant
Quartermaster 11. S. Army, having been
assigned to duty in this city, will take
charge of all duties pertaining to Quar
termaster's Department, except what
pertains to water and railroad transpor
tation. All requisitions will hereafter
be made directly upon him. -
J. W. SHEAFFEE,
Colocel and Chief Quartermaster,
Department of the Gulf.
Capt. Shipley left here just before the
breaking out of the war as a Second
Lieutenant in the regular army, to which
position he rose from the ranks. At
the inauguration of the war, it was his
fortune (or perhaps misfortune, we know
he desired a wider field of operations)
to be assigned to duty in Fort l'ickeos.
While there, about a year ago, he led a
boati crew at night into the harbor of
Pensacola, set fire to and blew np the
works at the Navy yard, right under the
noses of the rebel army there stationed
to defend them, and escaped 414ith his
crow without the loss of a man. This
was spoken of in the papers at the time
of its occurrence as one of the most da
ring—and important feats of the war, and
Capt. Shipley waN complimented gener
ally on ite successful accomplishment.
For this and other meritorious services,
ho has very properly been promoted to
the important position he now holds in
New Orleans. We cordially congratu
late him, and predict for him still higher
honors.—lfarrieburg nlegraph.
Lieutenant, now Caplain Shipley for
a time resided in this borough. Ile has
made rapid strides up the ladder of
fame during the rebellion. He is re
garded as a brave and intelligent officer.
TUE " OLD Swann," Capt. S. D. Mil
ler of this borough, received a letter a
few days since from Col, now General
Thotnas Welsh, dated Camp, opposite
Fredericksburg, Va., in which he says :
-1 feel proud of the Marietta boys who
are with me in companies B. and K. and
now that the very few cowards have de
serted and gone home, I feel like rely
ing strongly on the good• and true men
of your town who have stood shoulder
to shoulder in the great battles of South
Mountain and Antietam. I trust your
citizens will bear them in mind , and hon
or them as their gallantry and heroism
so entitle them. The weather is very
cold and disagreeable, yet our boys have
managed to make themselves comforta
ble by constructing huts, digging caves,
&c. It is impossible to surmise any
thing in regard to our movements ; it is
very plain, however, that the reels are
very strong immediately in our front and
that they. have many powerful batteries
to prevent us from crossing the river.—
As our corps is directly in front, the
probabilities are in favor of our being
the first to` meet the enemy in battle,
and all I have to say, is, that when old
Burnside tells us to go—that we are go
ing. Bear me in mind to my many
friends in Marietta, and to those who
have relations in my regiment., say to
them that although not a very old man,
still I will be a father to all the boys,
particularly those who fight well."
PREVALENCE OF SMALL-FOX. This
painful and dreaded disease is still
spreading in different parts of the coun
ty. For some months past it has been
prevailing in Halifax and Matamoras,
and recently it has made its appearance
in Dauphin, Linglestown, Progress, and
some of the rural districts of the county.
Very few cases, however, have proved
fatal, and the disease is • looked upon
with less dread than when it made its
first appearance.—Harrisburg Telegraph.
It is said our town too, is infested
with this loathsome disease. At the
lower end several deaths have occurred.
. sr By reference to our advertising
columns it will be seen that a very
pleasant borough residence is offered for
sale. This is certainly a very neat and
comfortable holm for any one wishing to
purchase.
sr The Chamber's property will be
sold this evening at the Donegal House.
See advertisement in another column.
or The Pennsylvania canal is empty

SOLDIERS ATTENTION !
See to your own health, do not trust to the
Army supplies, although most valuable.—
These Pills and Ointment have been thorough
ly tested, they are the only remedies used in
the European Camps and Barracks, for over
forty years Doctor Holloway has supplied all
the Armies in Europe, and during thd Crimean
Campaign he established a depot at Balaclava,
for the exclusive sale of these Great Remedies.
many a time his special Agent there has sold
over a ton in weight of the Ointment in a sin

I INFALLIBLE LINIMENT FOR HOR
SES is unrivaled by any, and in all cases of
Lameness, arising from Sprains, Bruises or
Wrentching, its effect is magical and certain.
Harness or Saddle Galls, Scratches; Mange,
&c., it will also cure speedily. Spavin and
Bingbone may be easily prevented and cured
in their incipient stages, but confirmed cases
are beyond the possibility of a radical cure.
No case of the kind; however, is so desperate
or hopeless but it may be alleviated by this
Liniment, and its faithful application will al
ways remove the Lameness, and enable the
horses to travel with comparative ease.
EEVERY HORSE OWNER should have
this remedy at band, for its timely use at
tne first appearance of Lameness will effectu
ally prevent these forreidable diseases, to
hich all horses are liable, add which render
so many otherwise valuable horses nearly
worthless.

PROFESSOR DEGRATH'S
ELECTRIC OIL.
_ o _
Wonderful Cures on Man and Beast
A VALUABLE MEDICINE!
T PROPOSE to cure, almost instantaneously,
individuals afflicted with Deafness, Head
ache, Neuralgia, Chill Fever, Ague, Rheuma
tism, and all Sores and Pains,
I propose to check and effectually dissipate
more ache and pain, and to accomplish nearer
and more perfect equilibrium of all the circula
ting fluids in the human system, than can be
effected by any other or all other methods of
medical aid in the same space of time, the
masses themselves being judges.
I do not propose to cure every disease, but
all such as are curable by any combination of
medical appliances. My Electric Oil operates
on chemical and electric principles, and is,
therefoti; applicable to the cure or natural
restoration of any organic derangement, aris
ing from an improper circulation of Nervous
vital fluid.
I want the masses to pin in this matter—
the well as the sick, because if these things
are 91, all are alike interested.
N. B. Please inform me of any case of fail
ure to cure, in from half hour to three weeks,
as I wish to cure or charge nothing.
The Columbus Sun remarks: On Saturday,
•an old -gentleman named Wm. C. Osborne,
well known in our city, who, from rheumatic
affections, has not been able to walk or use
his hands sufficient to feed himself, for mor
then ten years, was brought to Prof. De-Grath
on the street, when in the presence .4 &Urge
assemblage of people, be applied De Grath's
Electric Oil to one arm and shoulder. He was
immediately enabled to raise his hand to his
head and scratch it, a thing he said he bee
not done before in twelve years.
The New Hampshire Patriot says: Durind
the present week, no less than six of our
friends, who have been induced to try Prof.
De Grath's Electric Oil. for Rheumatism and
Deafness, in consequence of having seen this
_prearation advertised in our , colemns, have
called upon us to state the result of experi
ments. These persons assure us that their
Rueumatic pains have been entirely cured by
a few applications of De Grath's Electric Oil,
and they recommend its use to all who are
afflicted with any of the diseases which it is
designed to cure.
It seems that Rheumatism, Deafness, Neu
ralbia, Swollen and Stiff Joints, and other
Complaints to which we are all subject, have
lost their terrors. Prof. De Grath's Electric
Oil is warranted to relieve any case in a short
space of time, and with a trifling expense. It
always cures Scratches, Sprains, Galls and
Splints on horses.
