C APT. ALEX. N. SHIPLEY.—Tho friends
of Capt. Shipley in this city, will be
pleased to learn that he has been ap
pointed to the important and responsi
ble position of Assistant Quartermaster
in the city of New Orleans. In the New
Orleans Delta of Nov. 27th, we find his
appointthent announced as follows :

Captain A.- N. Shipley, Assistant
Quartermaster 11. S. Army, having been
assigned to duty in this city, will take
charge of all duties pertaining to Quar
termaster's Department, except what
pertains to water and railroad transpor
tation. All requisitions will hereafter
be made directly upon him. -

Capt. Shipley left here just before the
breaking out of the war as a Second
Lieutenant in the regular army, to which
position he rose from the ranks. At
the inauguration of the war, it was his
fortune (or perhaps misfortune, we know
he desired a wider field of operations)
to be assigned to duty in Fort l'ickeos.
While there, about a year ago, he led a
boati crew at night into the harbor of
Pensacola, set fire to and blew np the
works at the Navy yard, right under the
noses of the rebel army there stationed
to defend them, and escaped 414ith his
crow without the loss of a man. This
was spoken of in the papers at the time
of its occurrence as one of the most da
ring—and important feats of the war, and
Capt. Shipley waN complimented gener
ally on ite successful accomplishment.
For this and other meritorious services,
ho has very properly been promoted to
the important position he now holds in
New Orleans. We cordially congratu
late him, and predict for him still higher

Lieutenant, now Caplain Shipley for
a time resided in this borough. Ile has
made rapid strides up the ladder of
fame during the rebellion. He is re
garded as a brave and intelligent officer.
TUE " OLD Swann," Capt. S. D. Mil
ler of this borough, received a letter a
few days since from Col, now General
Thotnas Welsh, dated Camp, opposite
Fredericksburg, Va., in which he says :
-1 feel proud of the Marietta boys who
are with me in companies B. and K. and
now that the very few cowards have de
serted and gone home, I feel like rely
ing strongly on the good• and true men
of your town who have stood shoulder
to shoulder in the great battles of South
Mountain and Antietam. I trust your
citizens will bear them in mind , and hon
or them as their gallantry and heroism
so entitle them. The weather is very
cold and disagreeable, yet our boys have
managed to make themselves comforta
ble by constructing huts, digging caves,
&c. It is impossible to surmise any
thing in regard to our movements ; it is
very plain, however, that the reels are
very strong immediately in our front and
that they. have many powerful batteries
to prevent us from crossing the river.—
As our corps is directly in front, the
probabilities are in favor of our being
the first to` meet the enemy in battle,
and all I have to say, is, that when old
Burnside tells us to go—that we are go
ing. Bear me in mind to my many
friends in Marietta, and to those who
have relations in my regiment., say to
them that although not a very old man,
still I will be a father to all the boys,
particularly those who fight well."
PREVALENCE OF SMALL-FOX. This
painful and dreaded disease is still
spreading in different parts of the coun
ty. For some months past it has been
prevailing in Halifax and Matamoras,
and recently it has made its appearance
in Dauphin, Linglestown, Progress, and
some of the rural districts of the county.
Very few cases, however, have proved
fatal, and the disease is • looked upon
with less dread than when it made its
first appearance.—Harrisburg Telegraph.
It is said our town too, is infested
with this loathsome disease. At the
lower end several deaths have occurred.
