The committee for this bo rough is composed of Rev. A.. B. Grosh, Jacob Stahl, Geo. W. Mehaffey. gar A private and confidential letter from Jacob Thompsom, Buchanan's Sec celery or the Interior, to a friend in the south, written in November 1860, whilst in Buck's cabinet, has come to •tight. In it Thompson says : "Buchan .an is the truest friend to the south I 'have ever known from the north. He 'is a jewel and a man." Aye, what kind of a jewel ? One of John Randolph's kind—that shines and stinks like a ret .ten mackerel by moonlight. Alas poor Buck 1 Once more cornered. er The ball season has set in. The Franklin House, Maytown, is to be the scene of a "Christmas Eve- Hop" and our friend Hockrothe, of the White Swan—whose %uppers always "lay-out" any gotten up in this borough, will give s grand ball on Christmas eve, and having engaged Miller's cotillion band, fine music may be looked for, to say no thing of the viands. We are glad to learn that our for mer townsman, Mr. William H. Good year, than whom a more obliging and courteous gentleman does not live, has gone into the mercantile business in the town of Lebanon. The now firm, Mes srs. Goodyear Sr. Diffenbach—J. R. Hr. W. asks oar "Circle" to send oa some clothing. Xliir The Harrisburg Patriot speaking of exempts, says the number of drafted men in that county exempted from ser vice by the Surgeon General, for various physical ailments, is twenty-seven. The list of exempts for Lancaster county greatly exceeds that of any other county in the State, attioeutieg to three or four hundred. !sir Major Geo. W. Bardwell of Eli zabethtown, attached to Col. Heenan's 11Gth Pennsylvania Regiment, was wounded in the wrist at the battle of Fredericksburg. The Colonel, Lieut- Colonel and Major wetie all wounded.— The regiment being in Meagher's bri gade was in the hottest of the fight. or We observe that our borough au thorities have been busy at the lower end of town, repairing tho sidewalks—this is well—bat why not continue the good work to Hopkins' corner. Do not make fish of one and flee/ of another. Have the walks all made properly. egr The severe wind and rain on Mon day night, cleared the Susquehanna riv er of ice. The canal company had, on Saturday last, the ice boat at work and made the canal navigable, which will enable the boatmen to get to their homes. 1 We inadvertently omitted to state in our last, where or to whom the last box was sent by our Patriotic Cir cle. It was forwarded to Mrs. A. H. Ropes, of the Union Hotel Hospital, Cleorgetown, D. C. Cr The M. E. No rea son is given for his withdrawal from the service. Cr At the sale of the late Peter Ba ker's real estate on Saturday evening last, the two-story brick dwelling was purchased by the widow, for twelve-hun dred and seventy-five dollars. The other house was postponed. GENERAL THOMAS WELSH.--The Press pays a just and deserved tribute to Gen. Thomas Welsh of Columbia, in this county, but is in error in crediting him to Lebanon. The numerous friends of Thomas Welsh, the brave colonel of the gallant 45th Pennsylvania, to which be longs the honor of having turned the fortunes of the day in our favor at South Mountain, and which behaved with such marked heroism at Antietam, have been delighted to hear of his recent commis sion as a brigadier general of Veins teers. Brigadier General Welsh is from Columbia, Pennsylvania, and served with distinction in the Mexican war. Since the outbreak of the rebellion, in the spring of 1861, he has been in con stant service, passing through the ranks of captain, major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel. His appointment as brigadier general was eolicted by Governor Cur tin and General Burnside, and the promptness with which the merits of this valuable officer were recognized is highly creditable to the powers that be, as it is also a deserved compliment to Pennsylvania. General Welsh will have a command in the Ninth Army corps. We are right glad to congratulate our friend Welsh on his elevation. No' an deserves it better. In Mexice, in South Carolina, at South Mountain, at Antie tam, and now at Fredericksburg, he has shown his ability to lead the gallant 45th on to certain victory. =1 a- Lieut. H. H. McClune, son of 'squire M.cClune, now in the penitentia ry for forging land warrants, and a na tive of Lancaster county, we are sorry to say, has been tried by court martial under the following charges and found guilty : "Ist. Patterson Sterrett, at a cost of over six thousand dollars, to Dr. William B. Fahnestock of Lancas ter, who intends to locate in our bo rough for the purpose of practising his profession. This is unquestionably one of the finest residences in the county. fir We paid a flying visit to Lancas ter on Thursday last and while there droped-in to see the fur stock of Shultz & Brother. We were surprised to find so fine a stock. The Messrs Shultz have old furs re-fitted, made fashionable and dressed up like new. Their estab lishment is immediately opposite Mi chael's hotel. Wives, Mothers and Sisters, Whose husbands, sons and brothers are ser ving in the Army, cannot put into their knap sacks a more necessary or valuable gift than a few boxes of HOLLOWAY'S PILLS AND OINTMENT. They insure health even under the exposure of a Soldier's life. Only 25 cents a Box or Pot. SOLDIERS' SPECIAL NOTICE ! Do your duty to yourselves! Protect your Health ! 113=' Read the following, just received this day from Washington : Wistmccrox, D. C. T. HOLLOWAY, M. D. DEAR SIR :--I avail myself of this oppor tunity to express my gratitude for your kind ness in being so prompt in sending me your valuable Pills and Ointment. Hundreds of poor soldiers have been made comfortable and well by the use hif your medicines, and they all can testify to their healing powers and ca pability of giving instant relief. It has, with in my own observation, saved many a poor soldier from long sickness and much suffering. Yours truly, - D. G. VOSE, Washington, D. C. November 4, 11+62. [2O-121 - 5 r 4 - THE Friends and Relatives of the brave Soldiers and Sailors OLLOWAY'S PILLS AND OINT MENT.—AII who have Friends and elatives in the Army or Navy, should take special care, that they be amply supplied with these Pills and Ointment; and where the brave Soldiers and Sailors have neglected to provide themselves with them, no better pres ent can be sent them by their friends. They have been proved to be the Soldier's never failing-friend in the hour of need. COUGHS AND COLDS AFFECTING TROOPS. Will be speedily relieved and effectually cured by using these admirable medicines, and by paying proper attention to thg Directions which are attached to each Pot or Doz. Sick Headache and want of Appetite Incidental to Soldiers ! Those feelings which so sadden us, usually arise from trouble or annoyances, obstructed prespiration, or eating and drinking whatever is unwholesome, thus disturbing the healthful action of the liver and stomach. These organs must be relieved, if you desire to do well.— The Pills, taking according to the, printed instructions, will quickly produce a healthy ac tion in both liver and stomach, and as a natu ral consequence a clear head and good appeilte. Weakness and debility induced by over Fatigue. Will soon disappear by the use'of these in valuable Pills, and . the Soldier will quickly acquire. additional strength. Never. let the bowels be either confined or unduly acted. upon. It may seem strange that Holloway's Pills should be recommended for Dysentery and Flux, many persons supposing that they would increase the relaxation. This is a great mistake, for these Pills will correct the liver and stomach and thus remove all the acrid humours from the system. This medi cine will give tone and vigor to the whole organic system however deranged, while health and strength follow as a matter of course. Nothing -will stop the relaxation of the Bowels so sure as this famous medicine. VOLUNTEERS ATTENTION I Sores and Ulcers, Blotches and Swellings can with certainty be radically cured if the Pills are taken night and morning, and the Ointment be freely used as stated in the printed instructions. If treated in any other manner they day up in one part to break out in another. Whereas this Ointment will remove the formor from the system and. leave the Patients in vigorous and healthy man. It will require as little perseverance in bad cases to insuro a lasting cure. For. Wounds either occasioned by the Bayonet, Sabre or the Bullet, Sores or Bruises, To which every Soldier and Sailor are liable, there are no medicines so safe, sure , and con venient as Holloway's Pills and Ointment.— The poor wounded and almost dying sufferer might have his wounds dressed immediately, if he would only provide himself with this matchless Ointment, which should be thruss into the wound and smeared all around it, then cover with a piece of linen from his Knapsack and compressed with a handkerchief. Taking night and ' morning 6 or S Pills, to cool the system and prevent inflamalion. Every Soldier's Knapsack and Seaman's Chest should be provided with these valuable Remedies. IMPORTANT. CAUTION !—None are genuine unless the words 6, HOLLOWAY, NEW YORK and LortooN," are discernible as a Watt,- mark in every leaf of the book of directions, around each pot or box ; the same may be plainly seen by holding the leaf to the light.— A handsome reward will be given to any one rendering such information as may lead to the detection of any party or parties counterfeiting the medicines or vending the same, knowing them to be spurious. *,„,"Sold at the Manufactory of Professor HOLLOWAY, 80 Maiden ; Lane, New York, and by all respectable Druggists and Dealers in Medicine throughout the civilized world„ in pots, at 25c. 62c. and sleach.
