Ifir We learn from the papers that
our former townsman, Cul. William A.
Simpson, long a resident of Lock Ha

at the late fire in that place. We have
not learned the amount of his loss, but
find his store room building one of the
consumed.
sfrinitz & 1 ro., of Lancaster, have
added Furs to their already extensive
hat trade. Ladies in this vicinity need
not send to Philadelphia for furs, when
an excellent assortment is so near home,
at very fair p►ices. Call and see their
stock.
Itgir Druckenmiller, the Mountjoy po

LANCASTER COLNTY IRON.--"WO men
tioned recently, says the Philadelphia
North American, among our foreign ex
tracts, that "Mr. Lancaster has at pres
ent a gun underg&ng, at Woolwich, an
ordnance trial, which has already stood
more than twothousand rounds of pow
der, each of six pounds, and from all we
could hear is as far from being burst as
it was on the first day." The following
copy of a letter from Captain John H.
Dahlgren, our far famed Chief of the Na
val Bureau of Ordnance, to James M.
Hopkins, of Lancaster, Pa., shows a
singular coincidence of a gun made of
Lancaster county (Pa.) iron, which has
'stood two thousand rounds of powder
and ball, or shell, up to the date of the
letter, without any visible injury :
BUREAU OF ORDNANCE, NAVY
DEPARTMENT,
Washington City, Aug. 28, 1862.
Mr. James Al. Hopkins, Conowingo
Furnace, Lancaster county, Pa.—Sir :
Your note of August 25,„enclosing an
other from Alger Sc Co., has been re
ceived. In reply to your queries, I have
to state that a rifled 30 pounder, made
in this yard from the iron you sent me,
has been fired 2000 times, and is capa
ble of enduring much more. This has
given me a high opinion of your iron,
particularly as it is cold blast. At the
same time it demands proper treatment
and fazes slowly, not running so freely
as other iron tried here. I regret the
want of furnaces here, as it prevents me
from having some guns made hero of
your iron. In thus expressing myself,
however, I wish it to be distinctly un
derstood that any one who uses this, or
any other iron for navy cannon, does it
on his own judgement and risk. Such
guns will be inspected just as all others
arq, and will be received or rejected on
their own merits.
Very respectfully,
your obedient servant,
Juo. A. DAULGREN, Chief of Bureau.
We learn from a correspondent that
these Lancaster county ores are not
only suitable for castings but make the
very best of wrought 'iron.

Extraordinary alilitary Salve
The lonely sentry walking his rounds at
night, exposed to drenching rains and chilled
night air, is often seized with most VIOLENT
PAINS, Cough and suffocating Hoarseness,
first symptoms of quick consumption, but if
supplied with Holloway's Pills and Hollo
way's Ointment, all danger is averted, a few
Pills taken night and molting, and the Oint
ment briskly rubbed twice a day over the
throat and chest will remove the severest
pains and stop the most distressing or Danger
ous cough. Therefore we say to the whole
Army.
Soldiers Attention !!
See to your own health, do not trust to the
Army supplies, although most valuable.—
These Pills andOintmelkt have been thorough
ly tested, they are the only remedies used in
the European Camps and Barracks, for over
forty years Doctor Holloway has supplied all
the Armies in Europe, and during the Crimean
Campaign he established a depot at Balaclava,
for the exclusive sale of these Great Remedies.
many a time his special Agent there has sold
over a ton in weight of the Oirth.ent in a
single day. These terrible and fatal enemies
of the SOLDIERS IN CAMP,
Dierhea, Dysentery, Scurvy, Sores and Scrofu
lous Eruptions, all disappear like a charm
before these Pills Ointment, and now while
the cry rings throughout the land )
To Arms! To Arms!!
Do not let these brave men perish by disease,.
place in their hands these Precious Remedies,
that will enable them to resist the dangerous
exposures, the Fevers, the Chills, and the
wounds which they cannot avoid, and what is
more, cannot frequently get succour in the
moment of need, whereas if our brave men
have only to put their hands into their Knap
sacks and find there a sure remedy for all the
casualties of the battle field. How many
thousands of lives would thus be saved who
would otherwise perish before relief could be
obtained.
IMPORTANT CAUTION!—None are genuine
unless the words "Holloway, New York and
London," are disernible as a Water-mark in
every leaf of the book of directions around
each pot and box; the same may be plainly
seen by holding the leaf to the light. A hand
some reward will be given to any one render
ing such information as may lead to the de
tection of any party or parties counterfeiting
the medicines or vending the same, knowing
them to he spurious.
