cr The Lancaster County Teachers'
Institute will meet at Fulton Hall, on
Monday next, and continue one week.
The Lancaster Express speaking of the
event says : Though many of oar best
teachers, obedient to the call of country,
have buckled on their armor and gone
"to the wars," more strenuous exertions
will be put forth by those who remain,
and from arragementa already made, we
think the coming sessions promise to be
even more interesting and profitable
than any that have preceeded them.—
The best teaching talent in the county
(and we can boast of some of the best in
the State) will be present so that this
point in the teacher's journey through
the year cannot fail to deserve "the
white stone." Prof. Wickersham, our
foremost man in the cause of education,
is put down for three or four lectures.
Professor Brooks, always a favorite, in
struction each afternoon in Vocal Mu
ic ; Professor Porter, of Franklin and
Marshall College, natural science ; arith
metic, reading,and elocution, by teachers
well qualified to dispose of these import
ant branches ; and it•is the intention
of the committee to make physicist geog
raphy a prominent subject. Professor
Walter Wells has been engaged at con
siderable expense to deliver a course of
lectures. This gentleman is a brilliant
lecturer, a man of deep scientific re
search, and on this subject perhaps bet
ter posted than any other author in the
country.

North Ward is, of course, clear of the
draft, and ought to be for all time to
come.
114 - The supper at lleckrothe.'s White
Swan, on Thursday evening, was, regard
less of the rain and bad walking, quite
well attended. Of the table and its fix
ins it is needless for us to speak, for
every "good feeder" in this region knows
how George gets up a dinner or a sup
per. Being rather inclined to be a little
seedy, we left at an early hour, leaving
the more spirited to usher in the "we
small hours o' mornin" over the se
ductive wino cup. The S. B. Thomas
Rifles were well represented and almost
completely monopolized one end of the
table.
'As usual, Dellinger is again ahead.
Be has just received a lot of Buffalo
Robes, Horse Blankets, together with
a fine lot of Harness, Saddles, Whips,
and everything in his line of business.—
Mr. D. is an 'excellent mechanic and has
the nicest assortment in our plebe.

Ur At a meeting of the State Florti
cultural Society on Tuesday evening
last, in Philadelphia, officers for the en
suing year wore elected, among whom
we find our former townsman, Capt. S.
S. Rathvon, placed in the chair of en
tomology. Capt. R. is, beyond doubt,
the greatest entomologist in the State.
cir There was the usual crowd at
Quarter sessions court, this week. The
only case from Marietta, of any note,
was that of Joe Young. For assault
and battery with the Hippies and stab
bing Frederick Waller, he was found
guilty and sentenced to two years and
six months to the county prison.
- Dellinger has just received a lot

BUCHANAN AND THE U. S. SENATE :

States Senator: "The movements to
make ex-President Buchanan the next
United States Senator from Pennsylva
nia is most ridiculous and imprudent.
The imbecility of Buchanan involved us
in this war. Had he but possessed as
much courage in his whole body as Gen
eral Jackson had in one hair of his head
ho would have taken the advice of Gen
eral Scott, and served the South Caro
line. secessionists as Jackson served the
nulifiers, and we should have had no
farther trouble. Buchanan is unfit for
any office of responsibility and trust
and especially for so honorable an office
as that of Senator of the United States.
We would sooner see old Simon Camer
on occupy this position ; for Cameron,
unlike the imbecile and treacherous
Buchanan, has some pluck, some capaci
ty, some frankness, and some fidelity to
his friends."

years, He was a native of Chester
county, but resided for about forty years
of his life in Lancaster county, which he
twice represented in the State Legisla
ture, and was in 1826 the competitor of
Es-President Buchanan for Congress in
the districts cmposed of Lancaster,
Chester, and Delaware counties. Me
was, during all his life, a member of the
Democratic party, and from 1828 to the
time of his death a warm personal friend
of the Ex-President,
it ion. James Madison Porter
died at his residence in Easton, Penn
sylvania, on Tuesday morning of last
week, in the 70th year of his age. He
was a son of General Andrew Porter,
of the Revolutionary War, and a brother
of the ex Gov. David R. Porter, and of
the late Gov. George 13. Porter of Michi
gan, formerly of Lancaster. The de
ceased filled many important positions,
among them that of Secretary of War
under President Tyler, and was a lead
inginember of the Reform Convention
of 1837-8.

nesday last does great injustice to our
townsman, Isaac Wolfersberger, by
calling him "an anti bog eating Jew."—
This is wrong—lsaac is an American—
of American parents—born in Dauphin
county—and as :loyal as any roan that
stands upon a pair of feet, but is net as
chaste as he might be, but then he is not
a Breckinridge locofoco nor is he a Jew.

The long bridge at the lower end of
