The evening train west at 6:55. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1862 ALL HAIL MARIETTA.—The election on Tuesday last, was contested inch by inch by the Steinman democracy at this box—every possible resort was made to carry the box. A lot of contraband darkies was landed in town on the eve ning previous to the election to frighten laborers from voting for Mr. Stevens— saying that his election would thurst a thousand into the town before the set ting in of winter and thus prevent the poor white laborers from Letting work except at darkie wages. The voting window was closely guarded by the dem_ ocratic vigilance committee and every possible objection raised to such votes as were known to be for Stevens, but all —all would not do. ,Mr. S. having a majority 0f1.48 votes, which far exceed ed the expectations of the m6st sanguine of Mr. Stevens' friends. FA.NMERS' BANK OF Mi. JOY, Fa.—A new bank with this title, has commenced operationi under the Free Banking law. We have seen of its issues with the sim ple title, "Farmers' Bank of Mt. Joy," without any location thereon, neither place, county or State. To speak mild ly, such issues betokens both ignorance and incompetency. Of ,course no sane individual will receive the above notes; but it is our duty to inform the public of such issues. In some quarters, the - "Bank Note Company" which engraved the notes is blamed for an oversight.— lowever this may be, the issues should not have been made by the Bank. We clip the above from the Dial of Philadelphia and in explanation would say that the error in not giving the lo cality of the`Bank was discovered imme diately after the first issue. When dis covered no more of the notes were is sued, none will be until the error is re medied. The few notes, however, in circulation are perfectly good and will be redeemed by, the Bank whenever preserited.—.T.ancester Examiner.. gar The S. B. Thomas Rifles have fit ted up the Wickersham Academy build ing for an Armory. The second story has been papered, racks erected for the rifles, &c. They meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7 until 9 o'clock, for drill, and on Friday evening from 8 until 10 o'clock for other busi ness. They have had a stove put up and intend keeping it up as a reading room for the benefit of its members, which is certainly an excellent idea.— We beg the company will consider our "beaver" raised for the compliment paid 419 at their last meeting. r The ilomcepathic . Mellical Socie ty of Chester, Deleware ana Lancaster courtioP, held its eighth semi-annual meeting _in Lancaster on Tuesday a The following officers were elected for the ensuing year : President, Dr:- J. Tho next somi-annual meeting will be held in West Chester, on the second Tuesday in May next. Cr We are glad to learn that our "Borough Fathers" are about pressing upon the property owners the repairing and re-laying of the borough sidewalks. Now is the time to do so ; the river is low—sand plenty and ground in good condition for paving. The sidewalks of our place have always been ridiculed by strangers. or We observe amongst the killed at the battle in Kentucky, the name of James Fields,, commonly known in this place as "Jim Duglass." Jim was in Capt. Locher's company of Col. Ham bright's regiment and was a brave fel- low and made an excellent soldier. He was also in the three months service. stir Captain Roath sent us, by the hands of . Mr. Jacob M. Erisman, a "Se cesh pill" taken froze the battle field of Sharpsburg. It is a huge-looking pill and if seen coming toward us at the rate of 2:40, we can assure our friend, the captain, that we would break for a "big tree" or sompthidg else big. Godey for November is out ; a six figure fashion plate—in all. sixty three engravings—together with thb best kind of reading matter for every household—suitable for the parlor, the nursery, the boudoir, the kitchen, and the laundry. or General Steinman's majority in the "only democratic city," Lancaster, over Mr. Stevens, is only 343 I The city used to give from nine to eleven hundred. V.—We have received a statistical statement of the operations and condition of Co E., Captain E. D. Roath's company, from which we glean the following : Recruit ed at • Camp Curtin, Harrisburg.— Strength when organized, eighty-six en listed men and three commissioned offi cers. Left Camp Curtin, March 9, 1862, for Camp Ziegle, Washington, D. 0. ; left Camp Ziegle, April 2, for Upton, Virginia ; left Upton, April 15, for Cloud's Mills; left Cloud's, May 11, for Manasses Junction; left Manasses, May 20, for Catlett Station ; left Catlett, May 24, for Bresto and Manassas; left Man asses, May 28, and marched during the 28, 29, 30, 31, and June let for Front Royal. Left Front Royal for the west branch of the Shenandoah river and re turned to Front Royal. Left Front Royal on the 11th of June and marched to Catlett Station, thence to Warren ton, thence to Waterloo, thence to Cal pepper, thence to Cedar Mountain, Ra pidan, Slaughter's Mountain, Rappahan nock, Thoroughfare Gap, Gainesville, Bull Run, Centreville, Chantilly, Hall's Hill, Sharpsburg, Rockville, Mechanics ville, and passing through Washington city, Boonsboro', and arrived at Mer cerville, Maryland, on the 19th of Sep tember. Company E. participated in the following battles : Cedar Mountain, Rappahannock, Thoroughfare Gap, Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain and Antietam. The company Most at Bull Run, one killed and 18 wounded and missing; at Antietam, two killed and 7 wounded. From the above report it will be seen that Co. E. had but little play-time and certainly behaved becom ingly brave. In concluding a hasty let ter to us, Capt. R. thus speaks of the boys : "I have a brave set of boys— all . are willing to follow wherever I lead.--L The gallant charge at South Mountain, was the most glorious, though not the most bloody-11 men out of 31 followed me to the top of the cliffs, my gallant sergeant, Henry W. Smyser, was by my aide, and as we leaped the stone fence, General Duryea came back to me—l was then acting Lieut. Colonel—and said "Will Pennsylvania be enslaved ?" to which I answered "No, rather die freemen,"and with three cheers for Penn sylvania, up the hill we went." After the battle of Antietam, at the next roll call, the captain and but 29 privates an swered to their names. A PATRIOTIC HAY-MAKING PARTY 7.--•• Mrs. U. D. Benjamin of this place, re ceived a letter from her parents, resi ding in New York state, giving a de• scription of quite a patriotic hay-making party iu that neighborhood. It appears that a Mr. Browu wished to enlist but the condition of his clover fields deter red him. Several young ladies learning that this alone prevented his going to war, volunteered to prepare the grass for hay if it was cut, whereupon Mr. Brown and three other men cat the grass, dur ing which time the ladies prepared a rural dinner, which was served on a rude table erected on the field, after which a MT,' Warren Merchant presented each one of the twelve ladies with a new rake and at work they went, tossing and throwing the "new mown hay" in all directions. Then they gathered black berries for tea, by which time the "grass was hay." The letter winds up by say ing that "by nightfall we were a tired set of girls but notwithstanding, we had a gay time and Mr. Brown was soon off to war." Who doubts the "female spirit of '76" in that region 7 SEVERE ON THE 0. F. F.—The Hart ford 'Post says : "James Buchanan, the great high priest of imbecility, is en gaged in helping to defeat the Union ticket in Pennsylvania. The attitude assumed by this leader of the Jeff Davis Democracy, whose duty it is more than that of any other man in the country to sustain the Government and help to res cue it from its troubles, is conclusive proof of the sympathy existing between the faction of Breckinridge in the North and Southern traitors. For while he was weeping and snivelling, and pray ing and wringing his hands, the South erners were storing away weapons and ammunition in their arsenals, and sharpening their daggers with which to stab the nation's heart." We have received from the commis sioner of Patents, a copy of the Agricul tural Report for the year 1861. Among the papers is one on the History of flax, reports on sheep breeding and wool growing, hop culture, Sorghum culture and Sugar Making, Select Breeds of Cattle,Grape Culture and other subjects interresting to agriculturists. The Re port concludes with an interesting pa per on "Entomology" by our former townsman, Captain Rathvon, who has given the subject many years close at tention, and upon which no man in the State is more competent to write. The subject is here comiidered in its relation to the agriculturist, and should be read every farmer. _ wr On Friday last, for the first time, we tasted a Sickel pear, knowingly, and we freely confess they are the finest va riety we have ever had the good for tune to eat.
