C In Camp near the Banks of the Potomac. Cr e Pral September 21,1862. -••• FRIEND BARER: We (our regiment) A/Ann:TM CAR 'rum—The several pas- / have passed through a series of engage imager trains leave "Upper-84'ton" as follows:1 ments. And through all of which I es the morning train east at 7:15. The mail train, west at 11:23. The afternoon train east at ' taped safely, with the exception of a .5 : 16. The evening train west at 6:55. slight bruise in the side, caused by a piece of spent shell. The loss in our regiment has been quite heavy, and in company B. proportionally large. Last Sunday our regiment became engaged. for the first time since entering the ser vice. The battle took place at South Mountain, and was brought on by the skirmishers of our regiment being at tacked. The rebels rushed to the attack with a yell, thinking to take na unpre pared, but were met by the 45th with a yell equally as deafening, and a. deter mination to conquer or die in the at tempt. The battle resulted in a Com plete victory to our arms, bat sorry to say, with a loss of one hundred and thirty odd to our regiment, in killed and wounded. The loss in company. B. was two killed and seventeen wounded.— Company K. three killed and eleven wounded. Quite a number of prisoners were taken by our regiment, including two that were taken by myself, and two by Joe Bell. We slept all night on the battle field, and the next day resumed our march toward the enemy, who had taken advantage of the night by falling back. On Wednesday the 17th, we again met the enemy on the heights, near Sharpsburg. This time, although we made several successive charges, our loss was not so very great. The loss in the regiment amounted to about 25. The loss of Co. B. amounted to six wounded ; Co. K's loss amounted to six wounded. The only prisoners taken this time by 'the regiment were taken by Co. C. eight in all ; seven privates, and one Captain, (Capt. TwiggS) a nephew of Gen. Twiggs. 1 have his sword in my possession, which with a steel sabre, and a Mississippi bowie knife, I intend to keep as mementoes of battles, in which, with the rest, I have participated in.— The next day three companies were thrown out as skirmishers, and were ex posed to a severe fire of musketry, both by the rebels in front, and our own men behind us, until evening when we were relieved. The only loss sustained, was by Co. B, three were wounded. Since that time, and during intervals between engagements, we were under terrific ar tillery fire, until yesterday, when we ar rived at this place, where we now re main recruiting from our week's hard work of fatigue and exposure. My time is limited, so that I aannot•give any de tails, nor relate any particular instance of bravery shown by any particular one, as ALL, (not one exception in the regi ment of those who were engaged) fought bravely. Enclosed you will find a com plete list of causalities in companies B. and K. ; the two Lancaster-county com panies, which you will please publish, as the publication may prove very satis factory to the parents, relatives, and friends of the members of the• aforesaid companies. If any information is want ed in regard to any of the dead or wound ed, by any person, they will please write to me and I will attend to their desires immediately. I done all in my power to make the wounded comfortable, and have the dead decently buried. All our dead 'were buried side by side, with head boards to distinguish one from the other. Truly yours, J. M. R. ATURDAY, OCTO BER 4, 1862 S. B. Tnooks RIFLES :—Mrs. Char lotte Thompson of this place, sent a lib eral donation to the "S. B. Thomas Ri fles," whilst at Harrisburg, for the per chase of fruit while there, but their so journ was so short that they did not get an opportunity to make any purchases. On Saturday evening last the company was called together at their new Armory room, in the Wickersham Academy building, to partake of the fruit pur chased by her donation, which were de voured with many good wishes for the old lady's liberality. A vote of thanks was unanimously tendered and three cheers given for the good health and long life of Mrs. Charlotte Thompson. Through the kindness of Mr. John W. iliestand, we are enabled to present this week the muster roll of the company.— It will be observed that Mr. Eagle does not head the list as Captain, he having been elected Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment, which it is desired to keep organized, in tact, for any future im mergency. He is, however, the padrone of the company. We append the mus ter roll : MUSTER ROLL OF THE "S. B. THOMAS RIFLES OF MARIETTA." - W. 11.
