MONT(J051;;;, formerly pastor of the M. E. Church, in this borough, will preach in Zion Church, on Sunday morning, June Bth, at 10 o'clock. . . DEATH OF LIEUT. WINSLOW.-WO find the following, in reference to the death of Lieut. Winslow of Elk county, in the Lock Haven Democrat of the 10th ult. Lieut. R. O. Winslow died very sudden ly, in this place, on Saturday the 10 th instant, aged 4lyears. He raised a com pany last spring for Bane's Bucktail Riflemen, bnt was soon afterwards ap pointed Second Lieutenant of the 17th Infantry. Before he assumed his posi tion he was promoted to be First Lieut. of his company, and detailed for reeuiting service. In this capacity he was quite successful, and but a few days before his death sent 15 or 20 men into the service. He was buried on Wednesday (14th ult) with Masonic honors, and his funeral was largely attended." root Cobe ! No better, cleverer fel low ever wore an epaulet. Only a few weeks since he was 'en a visit to this place. He had many friends here, and now, alas, be is gone. Imo` Mr. Nathan Green, of Columbia, will canvass this borough on Monday next, for subscribers for"" Alfred Ely's Journal," giving a journal of his Prison Life in Richmond. This is an interest ing work and is nicely bound, contain ing a fine portrait of Mr. Ely, and de livered by Mr. Green at one dollar a copy. Mr. Green also delivers the '• Rebellion Record" in numbers, at fifty cents each ; it is issued in Monthly parts each being illustrated with admirable portraits on steel, of the chief actors—. eivil and military—union and rebel— in the struggle. This " Record" will form a most valuable work for future reference, and will be on the shelf of every library of any pretentious. Mr, Green has also the engravings with which the work is illustrated, on saner ate sheets; they are fine portraits and well worth framing. A happy re-union took place at the residence of Mrs. David Kauffman, near Manheim, on Sunday last. Two brothers, Henry Cassel, aged 86, and Abraham Cassel, aged 79, and one sister, Mrs. David Kauffman, aged 82 years, met, by appointment, and in all human probability for the last time on earth, and attended Mennonite meeting. These three old persons are the only children their parents ever had. Mr. Henry Cassel is the oldest citizen of Marietta, and was accompanied on this—his last trip away from home, by his estimable daughter, Miss Lizzie Cassel, whose many kind offices to the sick and needy will long be remembered. er We have just replaced a great loss; having sometime since lost our favorite pen—" Prince's Fountain Pen"—we have just obtained another. This the ne plus ultra of pens—its unparalled success is attributable only to its great merits. We couldnot—would not do without one. We regard a pen of this character us in dispensable to every gentleman's desk, and could we not replace ours no price could buy it. Read the advertisement in another column—then call and see our pen and be coavineed it is the pen. sgr On Wednesday the Susquehanna commenced to swell and by Thursday night it was over the bank at many places. Our lumbermen were very busy removing every thing movable from the river bank, but by Friday morning it began to fall again. A vast deal of timber, parts of bridges, &c., passed down during Thursday. It is regarded as one of the most sudden rises within the recollection of our " oldest inhabit ant." lir A delegate election will be held this (Saturday) evening, at the Town Hall, between the hours of 3 and 7 o'clock, to elect three or five delegates to represent this borough in County convention on Wednesday next, there to elect six delegates to represent this County in State Convention, in Harris burg, on Thursday, July 17th. la" Our correspondent Lewis Martin, has had the kindness to send us an ex cellent photograph of Co L. THOMAS NV ELSE ; he looks exceedingly well, and makes as fine a military appearance as any portrait we have yet seen. May he live to return to his home and his many friends. • sr The Vestry room of St. John's Church, Pequea, this county, was broken into last week, and the silk robe, scarf, &c. stolen. The Communion service bad been removed to the house of Mr. JHenderson, warden, or doubtless the sac riligious scoundrels would bave taken it. car Proposals will be received by the Chief Burgess or any of the Town Coun cil, until Monday evening next, for the collection of the Borough Tax Dupli cate for 1862. ICurrespondence of The Mariettian.] FORT DRAYTON, Otter Island, S. C Dear Col: After an absence of three months, I take this friendly opportunity to let you know our acts and our doings since my last account to you. I must let you know the drill of the Forty- Fifth ; we get up at five o'clock and eat breakfast at six, at seven we go out in our fatigue dress and drill till eight; come in and get ready to mount guard ; get on our dress suit and mount guard at nine o'clock and drill till ten, with our knapsacks on our back; come in and stack arms and get dinner at 12 ; get ready for drill again from three to five—come in at five and get ready for dress parade—black boots and dress up in dress ; go on dress at half past six to seven, and then come in and get ready for flea hunt; they are worse than all the Secesh down here ; you can reach down in the sand and get a whole hand full,. yes, they are worse here than in Wiley's hog petit in Summer time.— We hunt till eight o'clock, then get ready for roll call at nine, after that we cannot sleep for the fleas and musqui toes, for they are very bad, if you would see the poor soldiers bodies—they are worse then the marks left by the meazles. 1 must give you an account of the first of May : Sergeant M cCann two others and myself started out on an expedition for shells ; we got a. small boat and all four got in and started ; the water was calm, and we went about six miles across the sound, and got there safe—gathered shells till about five o'clock, when it commenced to rain, and we started for home—we got about half way across the sound when a storm came up and the boat upset ; we got on an Island where we hunted for a dry place and got lost, and about 10 o'clock we laid down under a tree and slept the remainder of the night; in the morning when we got up we found ourselves in the middle of a. marshy Island, we got in the small boat and spt out 'for camp, and finally reached Otte, Island on the 2d of May, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon ; all expected us lost, and the Colonel was going to send a company in search of us. Our Colonel has got us into a Brigade with the 97th 'l6th, and 55th Regt's., under General Wright, of Vermont, who, by all accounts, is a good General ; and if Charleston is to be taken we will be the first in it, for we are only twenty miles from it, and if Colonel Tom gets in a battle he will show Lancaster County that she has a Son who will leave his mark, and that Columbia may well be proud of him. Captain Baines and Lieut. Kline have their Company on Fenwick Island, about four miles from this place ; the boys are all well—not one sick, and all are improving in drill very fast, under a well drilled Captain and good Lieutenant. We have about three hundred coun trabands at work planting sweet pota toes, corn, cabbage, &c., we have also lots of black berries here fit to eat, I had the pleasure of eating a black berry pie, and in a few weeks we will have any amount of peaches. I must give you an account of another Alligator capture, by three of our new recruits, viz: Notty Myers, Swetty Myers and Bips Devit, it was nine feet long and weighed one hundred and fifty pounds ; the Col. says if any captures are to be made the Dry town boys have to do it, they are ahead of the Marietta boys for capture, and if Drytown has any more like them to send them on to the 45th, Our Quar ter Master, John McClure, has got his commissary fixins in good order, he has it clean and nice all around the camp ; he sends his highest regards to all in quiring friends in your vicinity. Your Correspondent, LEWIS MARTIN. tEr IL L. Sr, E. J. Zahm's jewelry store, corner of centre square and north queen street, Lancaster, was broken into and robbed of a couple of gold watches on Thursday morning about 2 o'clock,— The man who sleeps in the store was aroused by the pounding on the window, when he turned-up the gas, which is allowed to burn low all night, and on going to the queen street window saw a hand suddenly withdrawn and heard the retreating footsteps of the robber. He had evidently made a reconnoisance of the premises by daylight, and knew exactly where the watches hung sus pended in the window, and made his opening accordingly. Had there been no one in the store, he might have made a grand sweep of the window. The Lancaster Fencibles having now more members than are required by the military law of the State, have it in contemplation, we understand, to organize a battallion of two or three companies. By all means let the bat tallion be raised, and let the gallant and esteemed commander of the Fencibles be promoted to the Majorship. tir' Rev. James Latta, of the neigh borhood of Parkesburg, Chester County, a clergyman of the Presbyterian church, well known in this vicinity, died sudden ly while at breakfast, on Friday morning of last week, at the residence of Rev. Mr. Cromwell, in Philadelphia. Mr. L. was in attendance at the Sunday School Convention held in that City. tiwDiffenbac h has just received anoth er lot of summer goods. We observed in an exchange, that the 113 Pennsylvania Regiment of Cavalry, to which James A. Congdon, Esq., of this borough is Second Major, and Lewis B. Pierce of Bradford county Colonel, has left Philadelphia for the seat of war. Itir Park ;Spring, the gentleman who accompanied Professor Lowe, as tele graph operator, at the recent battle of Chickahominy hails from this county.— Ho has seen done that which no other man saw or did before him.
