Or The Annual account of the Com
missioners, is published in to•day's issue.
It exhibits in detail the whole financial
operations of the county for the past
year. and for this reason is interesting
'to the tax payers. Its greth length en
croaches upon our reading space.

A M.ONIMISNT FO& SALE.—Who, among
out wealthy men, desires to baits his
name perpetuated in the minds and
hearts of succeeding generations ?
That is the question. 'I here is a
sure method of effecting it. We need
a large ball for public meetings, lectures,
exhibitions, &c., in a convenient and
central position, in our borough-some
wince between Elbow lane and Market
Square, or faclng Market street on the
East side of Elbow lane.. A few thou
sand dollars would build it, with store
rooms on the first story to lettt,or,
less than $2OOO for a fine one-story ball
alone, on the plan of the High School,
but holding twice as many people. Any
, of our childless men of property, or
monied bachelors, can thus erect a
monument to his memory that may keep
this name living among us for genera
tions. Let some one.seize the golden
opportunity, build the hall, and give it
his name forever. What say you, men
of moneyed•repources—tchose name shall
osir Hall of Social Science and Recrea
tion bear down the stream of time ?
Tog Limeade . Sow ETY.—Labor, its
dignity and uses, was the subject of ad
interesting lecture delivered before the
Society on Monday evening last, by
Capt. S. S. Rathvon, of Lancaster.—
The subject was treated with much a
bility, and gave great satisfaction to the
numerous audience that attended on the
occasion.:. At the close the usual. dis-
Passion took 'place. Dr. Cameron main
tained that whiles, all legitimate labor
was honorable that connected with Agri
.culture was pre-eminently so—that as
,Ageicultare improved,' every thing else
iimpsoneed with it, that Horticulture
, which was a more cetioectrated form
of Agriculture exercised a like benefi
cial influence. and that the community
around Marietta were indebted to the
Meatere. Engle, for. their enterprise in
the improvement of Horticulture. The
Doctor. was followed by Messrs. :Spang
ler, Sawyer,. J. W. Clark, Cassel and
Ineistund. Mr. Cassel in very happy
and appropriate terms, alluded to ebe
fact that he and Captain Rathvon bad
been school boys together, and that in
youth us well as at a more matured
period of life , he had always been are
markable student, and that •we bad that
evenirg, enjoyed
. some of the fruits of
industry. In conclusion, the Rev. A.B.
Urosh briefly reviewed the leature, and
acknowledged the obligations .of the
meeting to Captain R., for the Hai in-
IttHectetal treat, with whiCh every one
present was so very well satisfied. He
reminded 1.10 endience that Capt. Rath
von was one,of theenselves r that be was
a self made man, and that his attain
ments in literature and sciende,' were
probably, in some respects, unsurpassed
by those of any in the State. Mr. G.
remarked further, that Capt. R. was
one of whom.the citizens of Marietta
might" justly feel proud, that he was
glad to see so large an attendance, and
to have tbe assurance that the!lecture
of the evening would, unquestionably,
be regarded by all who beard it, as an
additional testimonial to the merits of
sour distinguished townsman.
