BAKER—You say you could not close your paper against the " reply" (?) of "A Returned Volunteer"; "but indeed this shall be the last of ii." If you mean that this " masked battery" may assail me, but that I shall not have even "an open field" for self defence, I respectfully appeal from your decision to your own better judgement—because Ist, The "reply," as you call it, re• affirms his falseC,harges, without even noticing the facts I had stated in refu tation. 11.36 a. m 7.00 p.m 2d, His "reply introduces new matter. He now attacks me—mistates the cir cumstances and motives under which my defence of the slandered was written. 3d, If, you would exclude ‘ 1 vile per sonalities," exclude, him, (as he, only, used them) by requiring' him to sign his name to his articles—which he will not dare do ; for assassins of reputation, as of life, are proverbial cowards. But as You published his " vile person alities" at the first, and now, again, against me, (without requiring retraction of the old before publishing the new slanders,) I respectfully submit that common justice requires you to publish my defence against this stabber in the dark. As the public generally believes even his signature (" A Returned Volunteer") to be untrue, the facts I have stated will probably be believed against any proof less assertions of one who dare not give his name to back his charges. Those facts were known to me before his charges appeared, and were written without the knowledge of the parties— deliberately written,- and, on a subse quent day, carefully prepared for publi cation. It will .not answer, therefore, for this pretended " returned Volunteer" to charge me with his own folly and wickedness. It is well known that the soldier-husband could not compose those articres, and that their writer must have obtained the materials for his false charges from the soldier's wife, °directly or indirectly. The public, therefore, will judge—and judge correctly—who " has beep fooled , by a woman," and who " lent himself to any one as a tool"! I wish I could believe that be did it "thoughtlessly"; but his repetition of his slanders, after their refutation, forbids it. A pretty judge, he, of " the fittest position" for any one to occupy ! The Editor seems apologetically to suggest that his attacks were "playfully begun." But he who " scatters fire brands, arrows and death," is not ex cused because be says, " Am I not in sport ?" To conclude—His-selection of his po sition, vocation and weapons—his repe tition of slanders after their refutation —his empty sneers and false ascriptions of unworthy motives to a defence of the innocent—all show that he is hardly en titled to his (probably false) signature ; but rather belongs in character to those other volunteers who assail defenseless women rather than armed men, and pre fer masked batteries and other cowardly advantages to an open field and fair play. A. B. G. MARIETTA, Sept. 17th, 1861. On receiving , the above communica tion we looked over the correspondence referred to, to ascertain wherein we had shown any partiality to " A Returned Volunteer" so as to merit the castiga tions which "A. B. G." would wish to inflict upon us, and in doing so, we were utterly unable to charge ourself with any indiscretion whatever, and .we certainly had no desire to apologise for either party. In the first place " A Returned Vol unteer" simply enquired whether a ru mor, to the effect that one of the Relief Committee was in the habit of deducting' a dollar a week, from one of the claimant's on the funds, for rent, due a relative, was' correct. To this the Secretary of the Committee replied with considerable bit terness, and in his reply introduced a good 'deal of what we considered irrele vant matter, still we gave his communi cation at full length, which we did net to that of the "Volunteer." And though there was a distinct denial of the dollar a week being deducted, yet, as we under stood the matter, its was admitted that there was an. arrangement, by which a portion of the fund was appropriated to the paying of the rent; and on this it would have been no 'difficult, matter for Madam Rumor to have fabricated a much more formidable affair than the one under discussion. Apart 'from the charge on'our public of cold neglect, the whole affair is a trumpery tale of gossip, unworthy the attention of any disinter ested party. We really feel that we ought to apologise to our readers for troubling them with so mach An this suWect, but this is •certainly the last of it.LEd. And beautiful as they are all can enjoy them, none are so poor they cannot have flowers if they choose. And oh! what a pleasure it is to go into a garden filled with these treasures, to see them spread out before us in all their various colors, how the Spirit ascends to the Great Author of all and thanks him for giving us so much that is beauti ful, and we must think of the beautiful realms above. The foregoing thoughts have been called forth by the present of a bouquet; we never saw a more beauti ful one, what taste and ingenuity were displayed in the arrangement of the floral treasures. And we herewith ten der the lady our most heartfelt thanks, praying ber path through life may be strewed with flowers. J. C. K.
