CAMP NEAR PETERSBURG Va.,
• V*
271 e Pr6ent7COnclitrini - of the CO,
It is hard to realize the condition of things
in Petersburg at present All that is left
of the boastful and defiant rebel army con
., sista of some thousands of broken Muskets,
many, piccea of tifsatettufed artifery, - ,130 0 -
'reds or bailed and 40i - tided - bodies, and' :
long line of empty fortifications. We have
seen much of war and battles, but the siege
of Petersburg surpasses anything we have
yet witnessed in point of magnitu de
, and sci
ence, aa,.*ell "of •iititittieruclightine The
ground inside of the foils
,is covered with
cartridge ;piipbriqiiiidjthe eaitlo.islilotted
with rebel blood. The fight for the posses

The )iiiieolate.'- The whites havl

town closer to the works has been riddled

scattered among the pines 011ie upper coun

from behind a shutter or a door ajar, but
the eight is unfrequim t, and.the etolegg)a . nqe
is toeunlovely that thetnien solditewishes
-it had not been vouchsafed. Everything is
at a stand. The stores and, shops, that one
year ago were teeming with business, "tire
now bare, and the grim occupants stare a '
you from the Actor step, woefully picturing
the desolation that a causeless rebellion has
brought-upon-the-people:--- - , •
• I went around to the building of the Pe
tersburg Express, but found its doots lock
ed. A fraternal feeling led me to this;
when I pent there,' I found, if I wished to
wag a printer's paw, I would have to wag my
own. There are many finoopenings here for
•entekprising "Yanks," and it is predicted,
that in a few months this city 'as well as Rich
mond will be alive with enterptise. '
Scarcely any buildings were destroyed by
fire. • Th.o Slave I'en was filled with cotton.
It was fired and burnt to the ground.
tobacco warehouse was burnt, and another

pre - Vious to our occupation, were in a starving
condition. The negraes say that more food
was thrown away by our army before it march

'The army was subsist ed first, the people last.
