Oh t , let the squl - its ehitakrs break-
Arouse ha 'senses and awake,
TO see how soon
4f ,Life,.in its glories, glides away,
.And the stern footsteps of dicey
Caine stealing on.
And while we view the'relling tide,
Down which our flowing minutes
Away so fast,
Let us the present hour 'employ,
Apd:deem each future dream a joy
Already fast.= ,
Let no vain hope deceive the mind=
No happier let tie hope to find
TO-271 orrow than to-day.
Our golden dreams of yore were bright,
Like them the present flail delight-- -
Like them decay.
Our lives like holing streams must be,:
That into 'one engulphing sea
Are doomed to Wi—
ne sea of death, whose waves roll on
O'er king and king torn, crown and throne
And swallow ail.
Alike;theliver's lordly tide,
Alike the bumble rivulets glide
To that sad wave;
Death levels poverty and
And rich and poor sleep side by side
Wi•hin the grave.
Our birth is but a start-place;
Life 'is the running of tho race,
And death the goal:
There all our glittering toys are brought—
That path alone, of all unsought,
Is found of all
See,then,how—poor-end—little-wort
Are all those glittering toys of earth
That lure us here!
Dreams of a sleep that death must break
Alas! before it bids us wake,
We disappear.
Long ere the damp of death can blight,
The cheek's pure glow of red and white
Has passed away.
Youth smiled, and all was heavenly fair—
Age came and laid his finger there,
And where are they?
Where the strength that spnrnel. decay,
The step that roved so tight and gay,
The heart's blithe tone?
The strength is gone. the step is slow;
Thejoy grows wearisome, and wo!
When age comes on!

What reasons Carr you give to the nations of
the earth 'to justify it? They will be the
calm and deliberate judges in the ease; and
to what eauss, or one'overtact,'cart you point
on which to rest the plea of justification ?
What justice has been denied,- or what claim
founded in justice and right has been with
held? Can any of you to-day name one gov
ernmental act of wrong deliberately and pur
posely done by the government at Washing
ton, of which.the South has a right to com
plain? I challenge the answer.
Oa the other hand, let me show ate facts
of which I wish you to judge; I will only
state facts which are clear and undeniable,
and which now stands as records authentie
in the history of our country. When we of
the South demanded the slave trade or the
importation of Africans for the cultivation of
our lands, did they not yield the right for
twenty years? When we asked for a three
fifth• representation in Congress for our'
slaves was it not granted? When we deman
ded the return of any fugitive from justice,
or-the-reeoveiy-:cl*--those-persons - owing laty,
or allegiance,, was it not incorporated in the
Constitution, aid again ratified and strength
ened in the fugitive slave law of I850?
When we asked- that, more territory should
be added, that we might spread the institu
tion of slavery, have they not yielded to our
demands, in giving Louisiana, Florida and
Texas; out of which four States have been
carved, aad ample territory for four more to
be added in due time, if you by this unwise
and impolitic act, do not destroy this 'hope,
and perhaps by it lose all, and have your last
slave wrenched from you by , stern military
rule, as South Anaeriba, and. Mexico were, or
by the vindictive decree of universal eman
cipation, which may reasonably be ,eFpected
to follow? ; • ,
But what have we to gain by. this, propo-,
sed change of our relation to the General .
Government ?, We,have always had the con
trol of it, and can yet, if we•ren3ain in it; and.
are united,as• we have : been. , We have„ had
a majority of the Presidents lehosen cram the,l

The First Marriage.
We like short courtships, and in this Ad
am acted like a sensible man. He fell asleep
a bachelor, and awoke to finehiruself a mar
ried man. He appeared, to have popped the
question almost immediately after meeting
Ald'lle Eve, and she, without any flirtation
or shyness, gave him _ . a kiss and herself.—
Of this first event in` this weild we , have,
hOwever, our thoughts, and sometimes in 'a
poetical mood have wished that we were the
man that did it. But the deed is done.—
The chance was'Adam's and he improved it
We iike the notion of getting married, in a
garden. It is a good taste, We like a pri
vat° wedding. Adam's was private. No
,envious beaut was there ; no croaking, old
maids; no chattering aunts and grumbling
'grandmothers. ' The birds of heaven were
the minstrels, and the glad sky flung its'light
apon the scene. One thing about the wed
ding brings queer thoughts .to us, spite of
scriptural truth. Adam and his wife' were
very young' to be married—some itato'or three
days •old, according to the sagest speculations
of theologians--mere babies—larger, but no
older, without experience,iwithout a house,
without a pot or• kettle,---=nothing but love
and Eden.
