My Friends—When, we anticipated ob

invaders, according to the combinations to
_which you are no ,strangers, and while I
was exclusively occupied in carrying on
hostilities against the enemy,' as you well
knOm, which object alone brought us this way,
I received the surprising communication of
Don Luis de In Rosa,Minister of State and
War, in which he inorms me that by order
of His Excellency - the President of the Su

Supreme E.Xecutive power, by the appoint
ment which I made to that effect in my de

deliver the Command of this body of troops
to his Excellency General of Division, Don

bolding the same, rank. Although against
so strange a procedure I could urge many
objections,s I will do in due time before

From dose motives I separate myttelf,
from you with the profoundest regret. You
are my companions in misfortune, but are
the faithful iservants of the nation. Your
intentions are known to me, and you know
that our intentions were tp perish fighting
for the most sacred of causes, or to snatch
from fortune some important favor. I der

of my enemies, or to ,effect an inglorious
