LANGFORD CONVICTED.—We are inform-,
ed`that James P. Langford,. sometime since ,
arrested in Bradford county for the murder,
of his wife, was convicted in a special court'

appeared Sr the Commonwealth ; D. Wit-
mat, E. W. Baird, and J. C. Knox, Esq'rs.,
foe the prisoner. The fashionable plea of
insanity was offered by the defence, bin the

such insanity deserved the severest punish

LETTERS FRO THE EILTFOINLI

My Dear Father:—We left Rio de Jan
'eiro on the 29th Nov. last, and after a very
rough passage; around Cape Horn, we final
ly arrived in Safety at this port. After leav
ing Rio, we soiled cleverly along the coast
without experiencing any very rough weath
er until we had fairly rounded the cape,
and we began to congratulate ourselves in
having left the howling Atlantic for the
smooth waterii of the Peel& ; but on New
Year's eve, in latitude 55 deg. south, we
were met with one of those fearful storms
which renderS the passage around the Cape
so much dreaded by navigators: It would.
be impossible i'or a landsmen who has nev
er tried the perils of the deep, to form the
least conceptiOn of one of these Cape storms.
The fierce, winds have a clear sweep, and
the plunging Waves an uninterrupted flow
.ftom tuerldien .to meridian, and truly
their combred ? force presents a fearful scene
of sublnnity and danger to the poor marin
er. I ean y re+lily enter into the feelings of
those earl naeiptore, Ryron, Drake, Cav
endish, and ethers, who,' in that early day,
lookeirupOn the pasiage of Cape Horn as a
prominent l'eits of their lives. This storm
lasted two,.weeks, abating at interrah,--du
ring-Winch tiMe it made fearful ravages with
out span and . Figkingoind drifted our good
ship some 200, miles out of her course: Our
Captain had 4oubled the Horn sixteen times,
but pronounced this the roughest passage he
ever bad made. Eien the sailor, old sea
dogs as 'they lost their good cheer, and
seemed indifferent to the Ade ofthe ship.—

Half an hour aftprlthis sad occurrence,
the Adjutant of theßigiment, under whose

When we arrived 4 the western coast of.
South . America, it alniost seemed worth the
fearful price we hadpaid in doubling the
Cape, to ride upon the smooth and brilliant
waters of the Pacific. Aber the storm aba
ted, and we had rounded the Cape, we had
fine weather, the oblique rays of the sun
beaming upon us for 119 successive hours,
and the twilight lasting but the whole 24.
As our pod ship glided smoothly along,
gently rocked by the swell of the quiet wa
ters, I could not avoid contrasting it with
the wild scene we- had just passed through,
when rounding the Cape. -There the sea
was las ed into a foam, not unlike a field of
snow—hove us was the howliag storm, be
neath, the dalating breakers, while on every
side a wall of spray Stood around us, shut
ting in 'our vision to the very decks of the
Ship, and the unearth* roar of the wind and
waves was continually in our ears. But
now, how different—the brilliant phosphat
ic waters are asleep the mad winds are
hushed, and 'as our g od ship goes steadily
and lazily along, I con scarcely convince
myself of its reality, So much does it seem
