Man agesteat of noney•Bees, No. ii.
The ground around and under the hives
should be kept free , him weeds and grass.
A hard smooth surface is best, as many a
weary bee, un returning home, fails in reach
ing the alighting board, and falls to the
ground, in which casit, should the ground
be encumbered with Ring grass and weeds,
they might become eritangled, and thus fall
a prey to the hosts of spiders that infest
such places. Nor lilt any better for the
safety of the beesoir Irove the ground in a
loose mellow condition,. as is i the : case when
the hoe is carelessly', used in cutting up
weeds. In this state i►f the soil, such bees
.as fall to the ground *gin become covered
with dust, and are ui4ble to rise. The best
way to kill the grass dna-weeds, is to satu
rate the ground in thd spring -with boiling
hot brine, which *ill 'Wfectisally put a stop
to vegetation. ,This !icing done, lay a strip
of board along in itioat of your hives, .as a
rising point for bens that return home heav
ily laden, and falliniund the hives, which
often does eceur, land if you will take the
trouble to *Sid 'theta, you will perceive
that they often fah to get upon the wing,
until they ascend slime small eminence,
from which they take a Start, and regain
the hive. This maybe considered a small
matter by many, yeti, our success -in every
branch of business consists in our attention
to the minutiae of out object, which in the
end shows firth a' tridmphant result. Sup
pose by our neglect Of cleaning around the
hives, vie lose the' stillill number of ten bees
per day, -the result would be as follows :
from
. the first of April to the first'of Novem
ber, we have 214 dais, and a loss of 2,140
bees ! It is by Such. means that- so many
fail in their success w ith bees, and eventual
.'" run out," as it is termed.
There is another consideration which
merits our attention.; Whoever has had a
prosperous colony othees, must have often
seen large clusters of bees hanging in in
verted cones. from the bottom-boards; and
perhaps he has frequdntly seen thud fall to•
the.ground by their tiWn gravitation, or the
force of the wind s It is particularly neces
sary on this acc ount, that the grass and
weeds around the hides should be extirpa
ted. Whenever I peticeive any of my hives
liable to such a result, I crop ,a few hands
full of grass and spread it directly under the
hives, and whenever; the clusters fall, they
are protected from the dirt, and the bees ad
here -together, if at night, or during a storm;
till the rays of the stiff call them forth.
In the months of Vey and June hund
reds of bees are seen running upon the
ground, in a disabled condition, endeavor
ing to rise upon the wing, but without sec-,
cess. This always tikes place during the
height of the breeding season. For several
years, I attributed it lo the fightini , ° of the
different stocks. I could see the bees .in
deadly strife, as I supposl.d, but I have since
. found that what appeared to me to be a
combat between bees Of different hives, was
only the turning out fbf doors of such im
perfect bees, as had bden brought into exis
tence in their respective hives. This fact
was shown by the removal of a hive, for the
purpose of producing an artificial swarm.—
I found the same qualnitrof disabled bees
around the hive so reiiieved, in a few hours
after the removal, shelving that they had no
, connection with any (Aber hive. _
The moth or univetisal enemy'of the bee,
is the only, enemy that we need fear in this
country. The wasp mid the king-bird some
times make havoc andong them, but every
enemy sinks into insignificance when com
pared with the wax-moth. Its first appear
ance is in May or June. It is of-a grey or
whitish color, similarito the millers. that flit
around the blaze of w ean
,cile, though not sb
large. - It remains in active during the day,
-but asas twilight sets in, it sallies forth
from its - ng places, and seeks out the
weakest s or swarms of bees for its °pc.-
, rations. acing gitiiped an entrance, it
sit
winds its way up the aside of the hive that is
least protected,,and hdringgained the sum
mit, or a secure; lodation, some distance
from the bottom of the hive, it there depos
its its eggs upon the: surface of the comb,
which in a few day 4 are hatched out, by
the internal heat generated by the bees, and
become white worms or catterpillars. - They
at once commence cleaving - around them
selves a white silken substance, as a protec
tion against the beds. They then aim
mence cutting away the combs, and build
ing galleries for their; own use, from which
they put forth their heads for foixi in every
direction. Their heids are covered with a
helmet, impenetrabli to the sting of a bee.
' 'When the bees percdive these insects thus
at work, they commence cementing them
in, and confining then to their original lo
cation, and consignidg them to starvation,
which is easily done Of there be but few of
them, but in cases of Tweak stocks, with con
stant lodgments of tile moth, they are soon
undermined, and giv e up . in despair, either
leaving the hive, or dwindling_ away in in
activity. The . sympsoms of the depreda
tions of the moth mkt be known by the fall
ing. of.particles of comb .upon the bottom=
board of the hive, of a brown. color. By
hanging the bottom tilard on wires, one can
see at once whether;hisbees are in danger
from the moth. TheJiesttime to look is in
the morning, and if Yiou find a considerable
covering ofortielesiif comb, such as the
gnawing of Ivornis would be likely to make,
and you And this font several mornings in
succession, you may expect that the destroy
er is at work. who the bees become ac
tive, and_ the winds 4rise during the day,
this comb-dust is -*whiny blown away,
hence early kithe morning is the tithe to
examine, unless thel, lerick. is so far under
mined as to give ovident Signs of it at any
time: Another sure , ilign is the inactivity of
the bees. As soon rut the moth gets the up
per hand, the bees disdiontinue all operations.
Many of them will leave, and join • neigh
boring lives, but kfe* will remain faithful
to the last, and die artheir posts.
Every apiarian shOuld be vigilant in look
ing- to his hives in season, that he may at
least save the honey„ - 4f not the bees, Of, his
mothy hives. I( tak_4l in hand in season,
he may, perhaps,. wgrk t liis bees, by driving

which
.ihe're has been such a diversity .sir
opinion nod action, as upon a prevention of
the moth! , Some have deposited a little salt
tinder the corners of the hives. Others have
recomminded catching them in basins of
sweetened 'vinegar. Others, again, have
trumpets forth grand discoveries in the
toneatioil of hives, that prevent the entrance
of the Moth, and more recently, some one
pretends that a lining of zinc will frighten
them away, or if they should deposit their
eggs within the hive, - by placing the hives
near the ,grotinO, they would not hatch out.
This is !all Moonshine. I give the moth
every poSsible facility to enter my hives.-

My hives are surrounded by scores of them

Not all he ingenuity of man can ever in

"SUGAR COATED" PILLS
•
, ! I Beware: Caution !
:
' The increasing popularity of Dr. C. Benj. Rmith's
improved Indian. Vegetable sugar- coaled Pills has
induced a tinmber of persons to make something
they call iht.l.s and coat them with sugar, in order
to sell theta fur the genuine, while they do not pos.

in uppead, uce to the original Dr. Smith's Pills. In
short, the arc an intended FRAUD uplin the cont.

an imitation sugar Coated Pill, manufactured in Al
bany, N. 1., has given them up, as he says, on ac
count of tl it miserable dishonest parties contented
in mannfatturing them. yhi, same party are now
'industriotuly circulating. reports calculated to injure
Dr. Smith .atid to affect the reputation of his valua
blepills; Inn rather than notice theta in public, Dr.
Smith is about to institute legnl„proceedings against
them for {heir slanders, as he has in another chase
against n ?similar party, in which he recovered a
large amount of daniages. These miserable imita

palm off th eir counterfeit pills, as the public know
that Dr. Smith's are the onginal and genuine. Sec
