The two prOlitinent causes of complaint set
forth by " A 'emocrit," are; a disregard of
party usages in'giving Bradford county a third
t e ns; and seedfldly, in selecting Mr. Wilmot,
who feels himeilf constrained to carry out his
principles into-:Faze Son, even to sus
taining MattinTin Baron for the Presidency.
First—as tatehe usage he speaks of : By
whom was it *Wished / I answer—by the
Democracy ofhii District acting through a
majority of tbeit Congressional Conferees. Its
object was to secure harmony in their nomina
tions, andlhe st . "cess of their candidates. The
power which creates a rule, has a right to alter
o e revoke it; etpecial' ly, when necessary for the
ver y purposes 'fr hich brought 'it into being.
That such nairiasity existed in this case, is
clearly shewb in the editorial comments ap
pended tO the timmunication in question ; as
well as by otlrer circumstances, to some of
which, I will. ttiiir briefly refer.
Self-eonstitufed leatterur Ez-Sheriffs---
Rt. and embryo Congressmen, and swelling
dictators of every class, may prate about usage
and all' that—David Wilmot's re-nomination
for another tali was wide by the irrepressible
voice of the fret, honest-hearted people or this
district. It was, due elate to, hfifi, and, to them
selves, in view or the great principles for which
he has been the; fearless and nnpurchaseable
advocate. Theta is much force in the.fact that
Bradford ciounti contains _almost as' many vo
ters as Tioga and Susquehanna both ; and
might, perhaps, 'fairly claim something like a
proportion of time in having a Representative.
But the late Dimocratic Convention speaking
the unanimous !voice of seventy delegates--
asked Mr. Wilnioes re-nomination upon higher
grounds: the Well-ascertained wishes of the
people of the w)olc district, with, a view to his
vindication °going the venal attacks. of South
ern Power, ,ostrPirs crouching vassals here in
the North I It
Why should ho not be sustained under these
circumstances, ky those (I frankly say,) of
ALL parties, 4:o are sincere in their attach
ment to the pAnciples which originated the
Proviso I' All of ne=with a few marked
uceptions—apPluved and applauded his course
in offering it. All admit he was and is right
:Amon this questiirti. Look, then, to the ruth
less manner in *bleb he has been asSailed ;
the concerted attacks upon him, both in Con
gress and out of*. The blood-hounds of pow
er, with a true Southern scent, are still yelping
et his heels, andaeeking his destruction! And
for "hat ? Because says one, (who writes him
self a Demoerat," and proves himself some:
thing else)—"be intends to vote for Martin
Tan Duren; and Mr. .Wilmot's election under
these eireurnstaecee, would' be hailed as a vic
tory over Cass itind Butler.' How such a vic
tory ? unless - the friends of Cass and Butler
join the heartless crusade against him.
Grant he,doei differ from the friends of Cass
and Butler upoii the subject of the Presidency;
and that he feels constrained to vote for Mar
tin Tan Buren in consequence of the position .
Gen. Can has *Bunted in his Nicholson letter
in rem] to tho "Proviso." Gen. Cass and
Mr. Wilmot were once well agreed upon that
subject, aud,,so Continued until very recently.
Geo. Cass has 44nged his viewa, and he avows
it;
,and nos( tsooth, unless David Wilmot
will change torNhe is unfit to represent the
freemen of thut - , District ! So say white men,
walking erect ;AAA's image, and calling them
selves Democr4S! 0, if my free worn had
the lightning's Power, I would place a brand
upon the craved forehead of every man who
thus belies his oi3tintry and his kind, in the ut

do we propose, a representative to Con
gress? II it that he may be the servile, soul
less sycophant Of power and, place ! Bowing
to a master, like an emasculated Eastern slave !
If we, the freeborn sons of the North happen
to differ (as iniruth, we do,) on some 'raki, - eta
with Gen. Cosi—must we yield our opinions,
and send an automaton to Congress,. slavishly
to echo uptight but Executive sentiments !
Yet such—separated from all twaddle about
"usage," and 1 7 claims of Tioge—are the l4ic
and language Of the writer I am reviewing.

Ftraiin the Independent Volunteer, Oct. 10, '32.
:1 To the Public:
At the solicitation of a number of highly re
speOtable and influential men In this county,
atetjurompted in st measure by a desire, to ren
der ouch aid as my limited abtlitiee will permit,
to the cause of republican lane - kat —the rights
of onr country—and in defence of our excellent
CorOtitution against the dangerous infringe
ments which have been attempted upon it by
tbeFresent party in power, J have connected
tiyeelf with , tbis paper, with the aeFtgn, in con
junition with its former proprietor, to make it
a pOrmanent as well as a useful Journal.
The circumstance of the recent political mu
tation of the Volunteer, and its final abandon
ment, is generally known. That the measure
whipi caused the transformation of the paper,
WaX,one which its friends and supporters of the
repiiblican 'Canso deeply lamented, cannot be
dented. And although for a time had the ef
fec to dampen the spirits of the National Re
pulAican Party in this county, yet I trust that
in the-end no bad consequences to the cause
will; arise from it.
II probably is generally recollected thatdu-
ring the contest for the Presidency in 1828, I
w 4 concerned in the , publication of the ' Sus-
quebanna Register,' and advocated the election
of Andrew Jackson. Should it be asked why
I asis now against him, I reply that he has long
ag4 abandoned every principle upon which he
wag originally supported and elected, to say
noting of his flagrant and high handed attaelus
uptin theindependence of Congress, the Nation
al judiciary, and the Constitution. My (pp
sitiim to Gen. Jackson is not of a recent date
- openly declared it immediately upon his
beil ,
g announced as a candidate for re-election.
Ev,ry principle of consistency and propriety
forbade his original friends' supporting „ bim a
scobnd time, not only on account of the infirm
kis?' incident to his advanced age, and the gen
erally acknowledged debility of mind, but that
one of the grand principles upon which he was
elected, was " that. a Presideia ought not to
i serv e more than one term," and to this send
, mentGen. Jackson. subscribed.
'stis it is the intention of the present publish
ertif the Volunteer to make it interesting and
usiful to all classes, as near as pOssible,- the
patronage of their friends sod the public
mdit earnestly solicited in its behalf.
