The file packet ship Ocean Monarch left
Liverpool on the '24th ult., with 360 steerage
passengers, 6 in the cabin and 22 in the second
cabal. With her crew 'she ,had on board 398
persons. Slie had not proceeded fan, however,
befo s ie the utmost consternation wae producedl
by an announcement that the ship vdas on fire,
and'!Searcely, bad the alarm been given when she
was in a complete blaze.
At the time the fire was discovered the vessel
wasrabout eight miles to the eastward of the
Great Armaliad, and several vessels were in
sight. A sknal of distress was at once given,
whi4 was' immediately answered by the yacht
beloting to Thomas Littledale, Esq., which was
about six miles distant. Mr. Littledale was
hiniielf on board; and at once bore her down
to raider what assistance was in his power.
There was a stiff breeze blowing, and bad the
yacht, ventured alongside it would have caused
thci l f otal destruction of all on board. A boat
waslipmediately lowered and proceeded to the
shrffor the purpose of rescuing some of the Ml
fort4nate passengers.
The flames continued to rage with increased
fury . and in a few minutes the rmizzen-mast
wend, overboard,.and in a fete minutes more the
maiti mast shared the same fate.
