THE NEW YORKERS AND PENNSYLVANIANS.
—A little more than twelve months ago, the
two great States of New York and Pennsylva
nia sent forth to the scene of war two splendid
volunteer regiments, composed each of about
one thousand men. These regiments, after!
serving through the brilliant and stirring
scene in the valley of Mexico, have returned
home, and are now encamped in our neighbor

hood. Their numbers aft , sadly reduced. Not
one-third of the force they carried away has'
returned. But they bring hack brilliant names
and high honors, the reward of their many deeds
of valor and prowess. They bring back the
consciousness of having served their country
with patriotic devotion. The New Yorkers were
under Quitman and Shields during the whole j
campaign. At the battle of Cerro Gordo they ;
were thrown, by the masterly strategy of Scott
and the ardent energy of Shields, upon the rear!
of the enemy, and did much to effect that brill-1
giant victory. They participated in the glory of!
I Contreras, and in the awful scenes of Churn
',user), where they were terribly cut down bv .
I the fire of the enemy's batteries. At Chepul
tepee they were in the front of Quitman's
umn in the attack on the outer f reifications
of that strong work—were among the first to
