In EL AND.-04Saturday last, in Dublin, Mr.
Mitchel, convicted of treason upon the previ
ous evening, wasisentenced tb fourteen years
transportation, add immediately removed utt;er
an escort squads of cavalry to a steamer" of
ear, which was i waiting to convey him to the
convict depot, atSpike Island, in the Cove iof
Cork.. His destkiation is Bermuda, whither
he has already sailed, to be incarcerated on
Ward a dock-yar'd hulk. Intense' excitement
prevailed in Dublin, up , to %Lnday' night, but
has since given lay to a deop and solemn si
lence, which dencoes stern preparation and re
solve. . 4 t liberalprovision will be tnade.by the
natisn fOr the convict's family.
The Earopeap nine's says :--;-When 'the
verdict of guilty against Mr. Mitchel was de
livered, a scene cgreat confusiod ensued in
the court but Ae tranquility of Ithe city of
Dublin-was not laterially distlrrhed-.
On the follotqng day, the 27t h• tilt., Mr.
Mitchel was. brodeit up for sentence, and af- •
ter some speech 4-, equally defiant las 'his pre
vivas conduct, lan authority whitsoever, he
was sentenced by the court to fourteen years'
transportation. 3On the same day,' he was con
veyed, in the ordinary prikon van, to a govern
ment steamer 13inz close to the qday.
We forbear t+ouch here upon 611 the ten
der and affecting circumstances of the sudden
parting of this unfortunate man with his wife,
children and confederates. The sternness of
ambition yielded I)efore the overpowering claims
of nature, and hdrried away as he was from the
theatre of his crime, few can have felt more
painfully than Swivel, the deep anguish of
seeing• One's nat'e land receding amidst the
growing waters. This has been a stunning
blow to the coAderate . party. A great clam-'
or has boon raisOd about the packing of the
jary. It has b*n attempted to impeach the
legality of the Onviezion by showing that Ito
mai Catholic jtOors Were' struck from the pan
el. and in the capes of O'Brien and Meagher,
no doubt this wis the fact ; but it seems to
ir.ve bean done 11 direct contradiction to the'
instructions of the government.
By a vote of 'the Repeal Association, the
wife and childrect of Mr. Mitchel are to be a
dopted by the purple of Ireland, and - their corn-'
