'ln doing so, of course, it will be - expected that we sheik accomiany it with some remarks, which ate h‘re submitted. It is well knoWn to our 'readers generally, that we, in company with, we hdlieve, a major- ity of-our Democratic citizens of the county, have been indisposed to favor the nomination of Mr. Buchanan. And we have done so, as we claim, not only in accordatce with our priv: liege, but with tbe best o Motives. Nor do we conceive how ; we could haves:done different- ly, and at the same time maintained faithfully the position of an expOnent of the principles of the Democratic party in this county. Our readers are all aware that this paper took ear ly grounds in faior of what is Called the Wil mot Proviso, ano that, moreover , its course in relation to that question was adiply and utc ' quivocally sustained by the party, in a mass Convention, regularly constituted ; no longer a go than a year ago last January, and that at do time since lids the party ever attempted• to repudiate its action at that'timii. Such being the case, what evidence had we that the peo ple, whose united voice then spoke in its favor; had changed tiMir opinion, or ;were ready to abandon such a policy? We a:ver that We bad none. Well, then, bow could `we have been expected to favor the nomination of a man to the Presidency, who lfad unegiiivocally declar ed his`oppositinn to that measure, and whom his friends - urged tieause of 'that opposition ? When Mr. Buchanan wrote liis'somewliat cele brated Berks county letter, in which he joined issue with the iidvocates of the Proviso, we conceilled that Iwo could not, consistently with! our previOns course, an& with the voice of thel party in this county, 'longer favor his irtimina- tion, while it was our privilege' to diisent. It was this view of the stibjeOt, (coupled perhaps, , with a dislike for his interference in the letting of the Post Office advertising,' and also with what we deemed the almost if not utterly hope less prospect of his receiving the vote of New York, should he be the candidate ; ) that induc ed us to disapprove of his nomination. But he has been-Alectell asthe choice.of the Democracy of the KeystoiM, With great una. nimity, and we of course abide the'regult, and if likewise the ;choice of a National Convention, shall do all in our power tb promote his elec tion, although in saying this W ' e wish it distinct ly understood that we do not compromise our opposition to the extension oralavery over ter ritory how free. The principles of such re striction we km* to be 'pillar among the people of all parties in ibis cottrity, and our po litical stability is not of that easy stamp that will allow us to advocate one principle to-day and another, Oita the reversei to-morrow -or lin other wordktto be a political automaton in 1 the hands of any man or set 4 men.' We hear that we have heeii censuredin cer tain quarters for the course uh 3 have pursutd in relation to this matter; brit we think we can show at least plausible, if not Sufficient, reasons for it. We claim!to have followed the behests of the party; fairly and . authoritively !expressed, and in doing so haVo intended to do nobody any Wrong. We court no personal ' i. controversy with those who differ , with us in relation to our course, anti shill have none un less forced into it, in wbie:h cline we . may be under the neessity, reluctant; though it be, of saying some things abont:polltical "fairness" and consistency that may pot be very comfort able to those who now coMle.np us. We say therefore in coicinfion, as Iwo have said before, thd - majority havti decided in favor of Mr. Buchanan, and we, shall' refkin from further rewaris until after the meeting of the National ConLvention. - . —One word iii refcrenee to our candidate for Canal CoMmissioner. ; IiIi„.
